Overwatch Open Beta later this week.

  • So, if you haven't heard of it already, Overwatch is Blizzard's team-based, hero-based First Person Shooter that comes out on May 24. It plays a lot like TF2, but with MOBA-like abilities with timers.

I only got to play in the Stress Test Beta for a few hours (I found out I had access 5 hours before it ended), but it seemed like a lot of fun. Then again, I also clocked over 6000 hours in TF2.

At the moment, Overwatch is only available for Windows, PS4, and XBox One. Since this is Blizzard, I expect we'll see an OSX version soon.

The Open Beta for the game starts on Wednesday at 4pm PDT. You can install the game via Blizzard's Battle.net app (PC), PSN, or XBLA. People who have pre-ordered the game should have received a code that allows them and a friend to access the game Monday at 4pm PDT.

Probably a good idea to check the system requirements before installing it, though.

  • I have been playing it off and on since NOV. It is a lot of fun to party up and play with a group on a private voice chat, but no one uses the in game voice chat enough to make playing with pugs very coordinated which is a negative to me. Everyone wants to play the game looking for kills instead of playing the objective. I think once more people understand how to better work together it will be more enjoyable. But it is a fun game.

  • @powerlord It looks like a nice game, but... 60€

  • @anonymous234 40€ works to the fancy version goes for 60€ and it only adds a few skins and goodies in other blizzard games.

  • @Reddog The cheaper edition is only available through BattleNet and only for the PC edition. Plus, they make it default to the fancy version... you have to actually click the Overwatch logo to get the basic edition.

  • @ben_lubar Good thing I specified the one made by Blizzard.

  • @Reddog Right, I found the cheaper version now.

Not that it matters since my current computer can't really handle any graphics better than Half-Life 2 😞 .

  • @powerlord I stand corrected. Tbh i didn't check console prices. And shoving the deluxe or origins version down your throat has been standard practice for Blizzard since ages

That's pretty much any games except Tribes and, very occasionally, Battlefield.

I've lost games of World of Tanks because someone drove off the objective to chase after an "easy" kill, then got nuked.

  • @anonymous234 Last game I bought from Blizzard was Diablo 3 and it was hugely disappointing. I'll give this one a pass until I have friends who want to play it with me.

That is true. I guess it just particularly annoys me in this game. I mean why not just play [Insert generic FPS here] if all you care about is your K/D.

  • @jaming ... or play the mode every game has focused on k/d ratios, and not the objective-based modes.

I mean it's not like Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare shipped with only objective-based modes. If you just want to kill, just play deathmatch or free-for-all. But if you're playing capture the widget, capture the damned widget damnit.

  • I played some during the open weekend not too long ago; I had some connection problems and didn't have much time to learn how to best play the characters, but it seems OK.

However, I don't have a group to play with nowadays to make sure I have a few non-idiots on my team. Without that or single player I don't see much point in buying it.
