Andy installer (Android emulator)

Hi old and new WTF users.
Long-time lurker here, I was locked out of my account after the switch to discourse, and I cba to complain. Now that we migrated away from it again, the new overlords helped me get it back.
Just my avatar seems to be forever lost in the remains of CS.

Anyways, for today's WTF. I was bored and curious, so I wanted to try out an Android emulator for PC. Google said the best option is "Andy".
Started the installer, first thing it does is give this error message:

    0_1459170654259_andy_setup.png

Um, what the hell makes you believe I want to install this on the c: partition??
How about you ask for the installation dir BEFORE you check for free space?

To channel Blakey: if that's their installer, I don't have much hope for the quality of the rest of their software.

Sweet, thanks. Thought the file got Jeff'd.

To be fair, every single part of the Android development ecosystem is a broken clusterfuck.

Obviously TRWTF is having only 60 GB free. 🚎

Correct me if I'm wrong, but almost every damned installer on the planet (running on Windows) attempts to use one of the 7 different temp directories to copy the stuff to first, and all of them are on C: drive. I had many an install fail due to this in the past.

Agreed. Especially those installer that is SFX type. Most of them just unzip their payload to %TEMP% folder before proceeding to installation (Although some of them are kind enough to ask first).

You'd better keep a lot of space on your system drive.

The OpenOffice installer, back when Sun was still a thing, used to have a first step where it asked you where to unpack the installation files. Neither it nor the LibreOffice installer does that any more. I blame Mozilla's most advanced user.

The system partition only contains Office, Visual Studio, and trivial stuff like Firefox. So I guess the real WTF is the Windows folder taking 35 GB. (I get that WinSxS is large, but why on earth is Windows\Installer 10GB even with NTFS compression enabled?)

That does not seem to be the (only) problem. I tried manually extracting the SFX first and running that, but the installer still craps itself.

In fact, I freed up some space by temporarily disabling hibernation. Ran the installer, moved everything to a different partition, and created junctions.
It's not simply the installer not asking for the directory before checking free space, it doesn't ask where to install AT ALL. :wtf:
Well, you can configure where to put the VM images, but not where the program itself goes. And of course, the image location defaults to User\AppData\Roaming.

Because a copy of every MSI you install goes into there. In the past, the payload (cab file) was stripped. But that stopped (which means a repair no longer requires locating the original msi). If you remove those MSIs (and some cleanup tools do), it means you will never be able to easily uninstall that program.

Maybe you need a smaller system partition then? I'm doing pretty well on a 50 GB slice of pie 🚎

    • Office 2013
    • Visio 2013 (stupid class requirements. I should uninstall this thing)
    • Visual Studio 2010
    • Visual Studio 2013
    • Chrome

Huh, looks like I need to clean the Downloads folder again...

Sounds like you badly need to use Disk Cleanup Wizard.

Reminds me that my main machine's boot SSD needs some cleaning; it was a bit low on space before I had two copies of Windows 10's install junk on it. ::sigh::

One of the best installer/updaters I've ever used was the one for the defunct MMO Star Wars Galaxies. If there wasn't enough space to install an update or expansion, it'd tell you and ask if you wanted to pick a new install location, suggesting a location that would have enough space if you had one. Once you approved a location it'd copy your install, delete the old one, and continue on with whatever it had been trying to do.

Nope, doesn't help, first thing I tried.
Whatever system files Disk Cleanup Wizard manages to clean are already gone. Starting it again it only shows some temp files.

Notice the blue color for the Installer folder, which is NTFS compression saving 3GB on this. There's only 10GB of space used in the Program Files folders for actual applications.

Anyways, I've already uninstalled the emulator again. The system runs smoothly with non-idiotic applications.

    @topspin Give https://www.piriform.com/ccleaner a try; it's a bit more thorough
