Let's make fun of the plot of Bioshock: Infinite

  • Trolleybus Mechanic

Playing Bioshock: Infinite. The gameplay is just fine-- like the other two. The setting is fucking gorgeous, graphics great, voice acting good, etc, etc.

So instead, let's make fun of the plot and worldbuilding as I go!

First off-- yet another economy that thrives entirely on selling guns and murder magic. I get it-- it's a video game-- but still gives me a chuckle when the only thing there is to spend money on is endless waves of gun vending machines. It makes me wonder how you maintain a population when the one and only thing you sell is used to shoot each other.

Which leads into the plot of the second major level. You've just fought your way out of the city, leaving a trail of hundreds of bodies behind. The entire place is absolutely littered with guns and ammo-- thousands of weapons just laying there amongst the corpses (because you can only carry 2 guns at a time). The second level starts with you getting captured by the leader of The Resistance, who tells you she'll give you a ride on her airship to safety, if you'll get a cache of guns for her from a gunsmith-- so she can lead a revolt in the city you just escaped from.

And I'm like-- why? Really, Daisy, why? Just turn the airship around and go back to the main city. Not only are there literally thousands of guns just fucking lying there-- I've also done you the favor of murdering pretty much the entire army, police force and reserve defense corps. You could probably storm the city with two drunk hobos and a bocci bat. You really don't need to send me on a convoluted gunrun through a second city.

And BTW: Did you know that racism is bad? Because that's the plot. Racism-- it's bad. Also elitism. And people who are racist are also stuck up fuckers who walk around talking aloud about potato-eaters and Chinamen.

Also, out of fucking nowhere: alternate universes.

If anyone's played through: I've just escape the factory and got chewed down by some bird fucking thing. No spoilers past that point, plz.

For the player, yes. For the NPCs there are shops that sell books and apples and cakes and stuff. And booze.

I played that game the first time shortly after my daughter was born. She's called Anna. There were some (for me) quite touching scenes that I won't spoil for you.

... wow. You haven't gotten very far, have you?

No, that is not the plot. Not even slightly. It's just part of the character profile of Comstock, what world he built for himself.

(Also without giving any spoilers, wait until you see what happens with the Vox Populi. A case could be made that the game has the opposite message.)

THAT is the plot. That and a lot of material about how much of the universe is governed by free will, and it's also kind of a story of redemption.

"He doesn't row?" "No, he doesn't row."

Oh right; there's also a kaiju.

I won't give you spoilers, but you've barely started the actual story of the game. Elizabeth is the story. She drives the entire story. Until you meet Elizabeth, it's just flavor.

:giggity: Engine found that oddly specific. I suppose if all the humans are shooting each other, the machines have to get their kicks somewhere else?

So did you ever get around to finish the game?

I'm on the "defend the ship" boss fight. Will pick it up again after editing the radio show. My usual "sit tight and shoot people" strategy doesn't work, so I've got to figure out the magic traps and shit.

IIRC you're pretty close to the end then. I ended up stuck there for a while myself.

  • The Handyman enemy type exists for the sole purpose of making sure you have less ammo and ruining the game's flow. (Yes that's one reason. Shut up.)

Also, I never really used that salt that eats people's bullets, but my friend says its stupidly unfair, letting you handle almost anything in the game with ease.

Aren't there two defend-the-ship boss fights? I might be mis-remembering.

The one after you learn the meaning of CAGE is near the end of the game.

    Vox Populi

    Remember kids...

Rebelling against the government is bad, because the government offers stability... even if it's racist.
