How do I ignore threads or categories?
-
The Mafia threads keep floating to the top of my /unread. I want to ignore them. How?
-
@Lorne-Kates you click the "ignore" button. It looks like this:
-
- Open Categories using the menu on top of the page
- Navigate to the category you want to ignore
- Click the gigantic Ignore button on the right side, under the category description
- Repeat the process for any categories under the one you want to ignore (e.g. Mafia -> Current Game), because ignoring a category apparently doesn't automatically ignore its subcategories, as I happened to find out today because I also wanted to stop seeing Mafia posts
-
Oh, but ignoring specific threads? Fuck if I know. I don't think you can, unfortunately.
-
@blek
Is there no whitelist?
-
-
@dse I suspect not, but even if there was it wouldn't help me very much.

I would LOVE to hit that button. But alas, it doesn't exist on any of the threads I want to ignore. Please tell us what magical incantation you needed to do to see this amazing button.
-
@blakeyrat I wonder why you still look at topics and notifications since it looks like you hate all of them
-
Is there any way to remove threads in ignored categories from the default view (which seems to be the same as Recent)?
I'm pretty sure ignored categories were completely hidden in Discourse, I don't remember seeing any Mafia threads after I ignored the category.
-
Dudn't seem to work. I ignored the Mafia category, and in /unread:
-
it's a single topic, just ignore it on your brains
-
@fbmac Except that it'll stay at the top of my /unread list... as will the next one and the next one and the next one.
And since the information density of the /unread screen is effectively only 2-3 posts, it pretty much fucks the screen completely.
-
@Lorne-Kates that's not in the Mafia category. That's in the Current Game category.
-
@ben_lubar Uh, if ignoring doesn't cascade into sub-categories, that seems to be a very suboptimal behavior...

I was going to do a reply with some element with fa-chevron-up in it but i can't get that working so FUCK!

How can I ignore all threads that @dse has posted or liked something in? B)
-
Ooh, and how do @Mafia-Players ignore me?
-
-
@izzion Cascading behaviours to subcategories is a massively long held debate in forum circles. Specifically, 'to cascade or not to cascade' because whichever you do, it is guaranteed to break somebody's workflow.
-
@Arantor obviously the correct way would be using a command line with sql-like syntax
ignore category where name="mafia" with cascade
-
@fbmac You just broke my workflow! Fine, just give me an option to
enable spacebar heatingnot cascade.
-
@Arantor you would just type it without the modifier "with cascade", like those sql commands " on delete cascade" do.
why can't I access the forum from the bash prompt, like IRC?
-
@fbmac See, there you go again breaking my workflow! I don't want to use the forum with a command line tool, so why would you break it for me just for your own convenience?!
In case it is not clear, I used to dev for one of the toxic hellstew forum platforms. I've literally had the to-cascade-or-not-to-cascade debate with people. There are those who feel it is appropriate to cascade because that's logical to them, and there are those who abuse the fact that things do not cascade to mimic features that don't exist, e.g. hidden but accessible categories that you have to know about in order to find.
-
if I weren't overloaded with boring things to do I would have fun writing a CLI node client interface.
commands could be something like:
nodecli unread - list unread topics
nodecli post topicnumber text
etc
-
@Arantor I know about your dealings with toxic hellstew. My only complain with smf is that it didn't do mobile out of the box.
It probably has some good plugin for it, but deciding on software is hard, and I excluded it based on it for my 0-users community (not counting the omnipresent spam bots)
If you have friends there yet I would suggest they ship it by default.
-
@fbmac SMF 2.1 is doing much better on the mobile front these days. They have a responsive thing in the works that isn't entirely terrible last I looked but it's been a while since I actually looked properly. They're currently stuck, as far as I know, in the OSS dev hell of trying to please everyone and having big debates on it.

Though as soon as you do that, there Will come the legitimate complaint that you Can't ignore a category only. Both behaviors seem useful, but getting the UX right for that could spawn a constellation of rants around here.

Considering the UX I'm looking at, I think "NodeBB getting the UX right" is a non-issue.
-
How about being able to set categories to 'Normal' or 'Ignored' with 'Normal the default, and subcategories to 'Normal', 'Ignored', or 'Inherit' with 'Inherit' as the default?
Never mind, probably completely unintuitive to the unwashed masses.
-
@PleegWat I think, if you ignore a category, there should be a popup asking the user if they want to ignore all subcategories too; similarly when you switch it back to Normal, a popup asking to do the same to subcategories

Asking the user which of two choices to do? That's umpossible and revolutionary ARE YOU APPLE?

Nah, I'm just saying worry about the things worth worrying about. It's like placing a turtle next to the Great Pyramid of Giza then saying, "oh wait, maybe we shouldn't put him there, he might stack that pyramid on his back and carry it off." It's not a worry you should be having.

To be fair... if that happened it would be catastrophic!

@Choonster I posted a thing to hide those topics from the recent view manually.

Hey, if a turtle can carry an entire world on it's back, what's a single pyramid?

I am.

Oh boy! The Ignore Category stuff is really quite broken.
I've been ignoring the Bugs category for a few months (because it's mostly really boring, given that I don't really want to spend time developing nodeBB) but the other threads have been quiet so I thought I'd re-expose it. Lots of things in Bugs turned up… as expected. So bulk mark as read. And now for the broken bit.
Having marked a load of Bugs threads as read, I'm now seeing lots of new threads that were invisible to me before (in the Unread view) despite the fact that they were not in Bugs. The Ignoring setting was ignoring all these other threads as well. How does that make sense at all?!
They seem to be old threads that hadn't been replied to in a couple of months. But that shouldn't matter; merely having a lot of ignored threads shouldn't have hidden them… yet here we are.
-
@fbmac said in How do I ignore threads or categories?:

There is actually a mailer like that, mh.
-
@dkf it only shows the first hundred odd unread threads. Sounds like the bugs are included in that abdominal then filtered out? Yeah, that's pretty bad
