The BBC's wooden table

  • At least it doesn't seem to be a wobbly table, they are professionals aren't they? :-)

  • It seems there is nobody at the Beeb who knows how to extract the data from a flash video. Or maybe it's illegal to do so, I don't know.

The Real WTF™ is that Boris actually won. None the less, I am looking forward to be entertained by this guy during the forthcoming 4*x years. Even if you don't like him you have to admit he's funny.

  •  Now wahat needs to happen is that a few more news networks successively copy the video as well, leading to a buildup of layers.

  • I know that someone at the Beeb knows how to extract flash video.... I've seen it done --in real time-- on the Graham Norton show.

Why their news department doesn't know how is the real WTF. They're supposed to investigate things and find things out.  Surely they could investigate and find out how to do this right.

  • I'm sorry, but there are very good journalistic reasons for doing the wooden table stunt in this case.

If you lifted the flash film directly, or if you lifted a competitors transmission directly, you would be in violation of copyright laws.

If, OTOH, you were filming a screen playing whatever you wanted to use, you would be doing your own original work, and voila! No copyright problem.

Så wooden tables are useful after all.

well, then we've got even bigger WTF in here - the copyright laws...

wait, wouldn't this mean, that if i rewrote the whole Harry Potter 6 to my computer, then labeled it by my name, and sold it, it would be legal?

...it would be my own work, after all... =D

No, but it might have worked if you videoed it in :)

You would be locked up for violating the laws of probability.

No, that would probably make you a Nigerian scammer.

  • @Cap'n Steve said:

No, that would probably make you a Nigerian scammer.

Please don't result to racial slurs, this isn't StormFront.  Not all scammers are African-American, either.  That's just prejudiced.

The real WTF is that you think copyright law works that way. In practice, you're creating an unauthorized derivative work (look it up sometime) and possibly an unauthorized public performance.

morbiuswilters: You fool, my use of "African-American" was a joke!  It's a satire of uptight, overly politically-correct types who insist on always saying "African-American" instead of "black".

Eternal Density: Ah ha!  You fell into my clever trap.  I only pretended to be clueless.  Actually, my comment about Nigeria not being in America was a satire of your satire!  I can see how you might've missed that - it was probably a bit too subtle for you.

MPS: Stop bumping threads with meaningless filler!

You know, this forum would be a lot more efficient if you'd just post for all of us.  It's tiring coming up with such witty, witty banter.

Also, to ruin the joke because none of you are as smart as I am: see, a "Nigerian scammer" contains a word* that almost sounds like another word that is often used as a racial slur.  My joke was pretending to misunderstand Cap'n Steve and pretend to be offended.  Get it?  IS IT FUNNY?

<font size="1">* Hint: It's the one that starts with an 'n'...</font>

  • @morbiuswilters said:

No way! It is soooo not funny! You explained it all!

My satire?  My line about laws of probability was a intended as a funny comment.  I was not intending to "expose, denounce, or deride vice, folly, etc"

When you post the definition of "satire" because you derailed several jokes, you know you're on the road to Funnytown.

    Population: Not you.

Even if referrring to Nigerian scammers was a slur against Nigerians, it would be a nationalist, not racist slur.

    @morbiuswilters said:

    Most Nigerians aren't American

    @morbiuswilters said:

Not really, since Nigerian  419 scammers are so common. Even the term 419 is a reference to the relevant passage in the Nigerian criminal code. Both "Nigerian Scammer" adn "419 scammer" are commonly used to distinguish the type of scam the GP linked to from other scams such as pump-and-dumps, pyramid schemes,

Professor Morbius' three-step plan to understanding humor:

    1) Read my explanation above.

    2) Feel like an idiot.

    3) Cry yourself to sleep because your strict, literal interpretation of every single thing you encounter will mean you can never enjoy humor nor make another sentient being laugh.

What can I say.  That's what happens when I try way too hard to be funny.  In the future I'll leave it to the experts....

I was serious.  You basically have our characteristics down and could do a decent job emulating us.  The only thing I was joking about was referring to comments as "witty, witty banter"..

  • My mistake. I forgot to refresh the page bofore posting a reply, so your post was the last one. Stupid mistake, but oh well. When I posted, I saw all the later posts, but you had replied which of course prevents me deleting it.

Such is the lot of the criminally insane.  Oh, you thought you could get away for it this time, but you did not anticipate the powerful, sensual depths of my cunning.  Your arrogance was your tragic flaw and it did you in just as surely as jealous did in Othello and a love for narcotics did in John Belushi.

I rigged the post so that it would reply mere moments after you had realized your error.  Of course, it was too late for you to do anything and my Vid-Droid captured the look on your face as the realization you were trapped drew across it.  The clip shall have a place of honor upon my Vid-Wall.

    Take him away, boys.

In all seriousness, it was just a (bad) joke.  No offense or factual accuracy intended at all....  If it makes you feel better, I could satirize myself:

    SpectateSwamp: ENORMOUS PILE OF BS

    CodeSimian: [Long-winded, unfocused rant]

CodeSimian: [Long-winded, unfocused rant, pt 2]

CodeSimian: [Minor correction to above, in the interest of factual accuracy]

CodeSimian: [Wonders aloud why he is still posting in this thread]

See how stupid I look there!

I never derailed them.  Anyhow, I wanted to ensure that on one tried to argue that I was satirical.  Oh well, the original joke was slighty funny on the grounds that it referenced an Error'd from a few weeks back (can't remember exactly which article), so lets have our laugh and move on.  Wait... everyone's already moved on.  Unless you'd like to give an exact definition of "derailing a joke" so I know when I have and haven't done it, and in which situations to avoid it.
