TIL That the State Flag for Hawaii is:
From: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-35890670
TBH, I have never bothered or cared about US State Flags. But in reading through the article - which proudly lists all those ex-colonial States that continue to incorporate the Union Flag, I noticed to me that they are mostly islands. It then occurred to me that they may be happy to do this because it would serve as a very potent reminder to those who would, to paraphrase the opening paragraph of H G Wells' War of the Worlds; regard that place with envious eyes, and slowly and surely drew their plans against them, just who they would be messing with.
It also amused me to consider that it (the Hawaiian State Flag) would have some interesting, and mixed, reactions amongst the population of the USA because of the remembrance of a heritage. Something the Hawaiians are obviously quite proud of.

The Wisconsin state flag is the result of someone having no idea how to design flags. "Uh, maybe throw in some triangles and a badger? And that one baking soda brand's logo? Oh, and put 'Forward' on it so you know which side is the front."
-
@ben_lubar Maryland is the legend.

But at least it goes some way to explain why Milwaukee's flag is so poor.

And now I feel like I got rick rolled into watching an episode of Fun With Flags by Dr. Sheldon Cooper.

Fun thing for a "man on the street" segment:
Here are two flags. One is the national flag of Chile. The other is the state flag of Texas. Without looking them up, are you 100% certain you know which is which?
-
@da-Doctah Were there supposed to be flags in your post? I can't see them.
-
You can thank Baron Baltimore for the Maryland flag. It's his coat of arms.
Also, apparently PA and Maryland had a "war".

For your amusement and ridicule, I present to you my state's new license plate design.
-
@cartman82 i was just going to go find that talk when i happened to scroll down and see i was 'd handily....
a single upvote is insufficient

I was about to crack a joke at someone's expense but then I remembered my country's flag has a coat of arms that contains:
- a goat
- a marten
- and three lion heads
Yeah... move along, too much to see here.
-
@Onyx And it's times like these I'm glad our flag is three colours in a geometric pattern :)
-
@Onyx Also, the fucking three stripe red-white-blue flag design is ridiculous at this point. Quick, identify these countries, from a far, without looking at the coat of arms!
-
@cartman82 Nope, no way. I guess the other red-blue-one is the Netherlands? And I don't even know all the coated ones for sure, too many damned two-headed birds, too!
-
@cartman82 well, those are (for unknown reasons) the Slavic countries colors, so it kind of makes sense except the Netherlands one. Same thing with Bolivar's countries (VE, CO, EC)

Let's see if I can actually make this work.

Now I am sure I'm being rick rolled into Fun With Flags.

What is wrong with goats?! You insensitive goatophobe clod. There are more goats on the planet than bald eagles.

-
@Luhmann Yes. The queues get silly at times.

Texas is the one with the blue covering the full vertical height of the flag.

Don't forget this:

@cartman82 You missed one:
The German bundesland Schleswig-Holstein!

@cartman82 That video made me look up my city's flag. I'll never get that horrible image out of my head again.

The colours for the Netherlands flag make sense: orange-white-blue were the colours of William of Orange (don’t ask me why he used them, though). His colours were adopted as those of the Republic of the United Netherlands, but if you make orange dye the traditional way (from plants), the yellow component fades rapidly and you’re soon left with red. Eventually, people stopped bothering with the orange and simply made the flag red-white-blue.
The Luxembourg flag (the unadorned red-white-blue one with the light shade of blue) also makes sense, because they’re the traditional colours of the duchy. I suspect the similarity to the Dutch flag may have resulted from Luxembourg being in a personal union with the Netherlands at the time the current flag was adopted.
As for the Slavic flags, there is the theory that Russia has a white-blue-red flag because Peter the Great based it on the flag of the Netherlands, just swapping the colours around.

The ones @cartman82 linked are not from places close to Russia (ex-Yugoslavia area) though so...
-
@cartman82 It may be because I grew up there, but Maryland's flag is perfectly cromulent. It's distinctive and instantly recognizable: You ARE NOT going to confuse it with anything else.
That's what flags are for. Not decoration.
-
@aliceif Also the town I grew up in. Slighly different shade of blue, but also horizontal stripes in red, white and blue.

When has geographical distance stopped people doing things because someone else they look up to, did it as well?

FWIW, an autistic co-worker of mine said that she liked the Maryland flag because of all the colors.
