Hello user I am 20MB JPEG
-
Check out the pagespeed insights report for the front page of the forum!
There's like 5MB of images that we can get rid of without changing anything visual. And instead of admin abuse, I'm going to ask everyone to do my job for me:
If you have not changed your avatar since the migration, you might have a gigantic image for an avatar. You should probably just re-upload the image and then the forum will run faster.
-
-
@ben_lubar so that's why my avatar looked squashed... it was.
-
@ben_lubar Fine, I'll change it. But first, pick me a new one.
-
-
Allowed file types are .png,.jpg,.bmp (maximum-file-size, 512)
One 512 potatoes of image coming right up!
-
Phew! My image isn't on the list!
It's fugly when blown up....

Yeah, but then I'd have to find my old one. That seems like a lot of work.
-
@FrostCat your avatar is only 120x120, so you don't have to do anything.

OMG! Where did pasting pictures go? *sob*

To the Chrome users only. Firefox and IE are broken atm IIRC.

No, because I'm using Chrome right now.

Also, it apparently works in Edge, so there's that.
-
That seems buggy. The two images, that is.
-
How were you doing it, then, Ben? Because right-click, "copy image", paste, doesn't seem to work any longer.
-
@FrostCat Yeah, it seems broken for me on Chrome.

We should probably mention OS--I am on Windows, and Ben is probably using his weirdo computer that isn't.
-
@FrostCat Ah, Windows too. But it seems to work for other images, but not that Costco one.

That's really weird. All I know is I tried like 5 times before giving up. Those sword flagellation pictures I posted earlier, I actually downloaded to my PC and then used the "upload picture" button like an animal.
-
@FrostCat I can't seem to paste from Chrome if I use Chrome's copy image menu option. Weird.

Man, good luck on anyone figuring the root cause of that out.

Chrome includes source info metadata in the clipboard with it?
-
@Tsaukpaetra I seem to recall that caused issues with certain paste-embeds in Discourse too

Code is here if anyone wants to take a stab.
-
@ben_lubar A naive solution would be to loop through the
items
array to find the image data

I wish I had the time to update my JS/etc knowledge to feel I could do that in the near future.

Well I would if the Upload Picture did something like open a file dialog instead of simply emulating the Save Changes button.
-
@PJH What happened to your balls?

I thought having an already uploaded avatar was preventing uploading a new one. So I discarded it.
Upload is still emulating Save Changes however.
Edit: Specifically, clicking the former makes the dialog disappear. It might be emulating Cancel - but the focus (dotted line around the button) stays around the Save Changes

Compressing and resizing https://what.thedailywtf.com/uploads/default/4289/1432602866adac08.png could save 312.8KiB (99% reduction).

Discourse took images that were pretty compressed already in some cases and made them significantly larger? That's idiotic and directly bass-ackwards. Jeff, if you read this, do realise that you are fucking retarded.
Oh well, now my avatar is only wasting around 2.5KB (instead of 150KB before!) so I guess we can live with that.
