No reply notification?

I didn't receive notification for this reply.
I guess you only get notification if someone @mentions you, the reply alone isn't enough.
Can someone confirm this? A known bug or misfeature? Should I open up a github issue?
-
Did this notify you?
-
Hmm... it did. Maybe it was something else.
Oh wait, I'm watching the thread. You got the notification?
-
@cartman82 You don't get a notification for a reply, only for a mention.
So you'll get one for this because of the mention automatically added to the beginning.
Remove that and you won't.
-
I didn't get a notification for this though. Either I returned to the thread too soon, or you got notified because I was replying to the first post in your thread... Did this one also notify?
-
@coldandtired that sounds like a bug. You should get notified for a reply, even if you aren't explicitly mentioned in it. Otherwise how do you know you have been replied to?
-
@Nocha It could be by design and the arrow + name is only meant as a convenient way to see the relevant post.
I would call it undesirable, though.
-
@coldandtired definitely undesirable. I suspect @cartman82 has not been notified of my reply to him upthread which has a question. Kinda highlights how bad it is if this is the case...

I was notified, but I suspect that's on account of me watching this thread, not because you replied to me specifically.
Anyway, I posted it here: https://github.com/apapadimoulis/what-bugs/issues/4
I guess it took a whole day to get ourselves kicked out of the main issues tracker. A new record.

Why are we not reporting direct to the main issues page? Do we have a few plugins that those in power want to confirm aren't the source of bugs before we hammer the node devs? @ben_lubar care to comment?
-
@cartman82 I think we should post NodeBB bugs onto the NodeBB bugtracker.
I don't know why we've created our own.

this, i suspect

@Accalia is correct, it's for weeding out site-specific CSS issues and plugin-specific issues before we migrate the bug reports to the nodebb tracker.

Ah, OK. I'll make sure I only post to our tracker going forward.
To be fair, I think my chat issue is a bonafide NodeBB bug. That area desperately needs some TLC.

I just got a notification that someone bookmarked a post of mine but there might not be one for simple replies?
I hope we get that reversed...

Yes, that's a strange decision. I like to think this is how it happened...
: Right, lets have a notification for mentions, bookmarks and chat messages.
: OK, I'll add replies to that list too. It makes sense that we notify someone of replies.
: ABSOLUTELY NOT! I didn't think of it, therefore we're not going to do it.
: But, how will anyone continue a discussion if they don't know they've been replied to?
: Sorry, not welcome here any more.

@DoctorJones Poor, damaged Doctor Jones
-
@DoctorJones I think the notifications are generated by the plugins as opposed to core?
-
@RaceProUK so by default you get no notifications, or fewer than we already have?
That's seems like an odd choice...
-
@DoctorJones the like notification and the following notifications are core, but mentions are a plugin.
-
@ben_lubar Wait... so the constant upvote spam is core?
Ok, that's a freaking bug as far as I'm concerned then, kill it with fire! (Not that it wouldn't be a bug if it were a plugin, but at least it would be more understandable)
-
@ben_lubar those are some weird choices. Reply and mentions should be core. :-/
