While there's a lot of joking around going on, I have decided that I like morbiuswilters better than MasterPlanSoftware. I also support the discouraging of suicide bombers.
Lets try to keep the personal attacks to Specate's threads, m'kay? (Though considering that was a gateway to a lot of other problems, perhaps we should tone that down too. Have we fed the troll enough yet?)

Obviously, for people to realize someone is kidding, it is not enough to make ridiculous satirical statements that run completely counter to one's personality and established beliefs. For example, if a regular forum poster who constantly makes off-colour jokes about religion and laces his posts with profanity all of a sudden uses formal, polite language, complains about other people's foul language and professes to be a devout bible-studying Christian who prays for his "enemies", there is just NO way anybody would be able to see the humour, irony, or sarcasm in that behaviour.
I mean, this is the INTERNET. Human emotion and nuance just doesn't translate. It's not as if guys like Dave Barry were able to regularly write funny columns for newspapers using ONLY THE PRINTED TO WORD TO CONVEY HUMOUR.

There is just no way anyone could possibly tell I was trying to make a (very lame) joke there. HUMOUR, IRONY, AND SARCASM JUST DON'T TRANSLATE TO THE INTERNET.
By the same token, nobody has ever written a funny book or cartoon in the history of all mankind. I mean, come on, it's the PRINTED WORD. You can't hear the author's voice or see the author's body language, facial expression, or any other important non-written cues. How could anybody find that funny?

It is probably hard for some people to realize that there's actually very few genuine personal attacks in this thread. I am far more of a lurker than a regular contributor (*), and I even I can see that.

Not really. There's a difference between attempting to make a joke (see my lame joke above), and actually making people laugh. In both cases, if the joke-teller is at least barely competent, the audience will at least get that it was supposed to be a joke.
Maybe I was a bit too harsh, though. I sure was gullible enough to miss that Otterdam was (sort of) in on the joke, although his later posts kind of belied that point.
After all, when cnn.com used to reprint The Onion (don't know if they still do), they placed a big SATIRE warning at the top of each article, as if it wouldn't be totally obvious to most. And it probably wouldn't be.
So, who am I to cast the first stone, and all that.

Eh, I think it's pretty obvious. The tough thing is to tell whether some people are playing a long by pretending not to realise this, or whether they are geniunely ignorant of what's really going on here.
