How to write a multi-page website

  • Visit http://iwiring.net/. Click on some of the links. Note how fast the pages load. Now, look at the source of the webpage. Notice anything?

  •  Big clue: "The page requires javascript"

  • It's also over 600K in size, so be prepared to wait if your connection sucks.

For some reason I don't want to become the maintainer of this thing.

    I think it's generated.

Does that somehow make it less stupid?

  • The enterprisey way to do this would be to run a javascript-powered AJAX spider in the background which dynamically pulls the whole site into the DOM bit by bit, in order of most-clicked-on links first, while simultaneously pegging your network card to 100%.

Wow, the corporate world has made me evil.

    And ugly.

No, the vat of acid I fell into did that. Actually that may have contributed to the evilness too, that or the nuclear waste accident.

  •  It uses http://www.tiddlywiki.com/ which is actually intended for things like putting it on a USB drive for a personal very portable notebook type application.

The fact that this is used as an actual organization's publicly facing website is quite retarded though.

  • Am I the only one that accidentally double-clicked something?

  • Have you checked out Microsoft.com lately, check out the links in the left hand column.

  • This is actually a pretty nice UI for a wiki. If he fetched the entries using AJAX instead of loading them all in one go, it could be a quite useable software.

Did you try double-clicking their contact information? Oh yes it works.  I'm tempted to move them halfway around the country.

But you can't edit it, can you? Not through normal means anyway.

Un(?)fortunately, even using the webdeveloper extension to make the form fields editable doesn't seem to work. Changes just don't stick, and it wouldn't let me put their offices in Canada.

I notice TiddlyWiki. A perfectly representative way to use it. Not even close to a WTF. Please play again, better luck next time.

Spreading your hate and oppression to this thread, too, eh?  You have 295.5 times as many posts as the person you were responding to, you should have 295.5 times the courtesy.  It's getting so I don't feel comfortable posting here anymore because I know you and your gang will show up and turn the place into a cauldron of boiling rage.  I'm starting to have nightmares about the forums here.  I've really enjoyed my time posting, but I think this may be the last time I post.  Lingerance, bstorer and AbbydonKrafts have just about sucked all the joy out this place.  Goodbye, TDWTF Forums.  Maybe we'll meet again under better circumstances.

  •  I for one would be VERY sorry to see you go.  I have just found this website and don't like to see interesting members leaving...

  • I think the evil of TiddlyWiki makes perfect sense when you consider that it's produced by one of the tentacles of British Telecom.

Go ahead. Ignore the silverlight spam and click on the test drive. Find out it doesn't work with Firefox. Fire up IE. Download the remote desktop Active X control. Log into the virtual vista pc. Experience the most painfully slow Vista session you'll ever see. :)

Ugh! Those clowns were at NAB (the National Association of Broadcasters convention). Their booth was a stark contrast to the others around it. Most other booths were touting things that would make you more productive, or would help you get material to your users faster or more easily. But Microsoft's was all about how you can limit your users in new and bizarre ways with Silverlight! It was all about how you could make your video not viewable and not downloadable and how it would self destruct, or something. I couldn't stand there and watch any demos because it really was depressing to see how they presented their products compared to everyone else there. It was very odd.

This is an attempt to be like GWT... GWT loads 1 page, then makes content requests when you click on tabs... This does the same thing, except ALL possible content is sent to you on load...

    To answer the question:

This is like building(from scratch) a nuclear reactor to power a single light bulb in the middle of a campground.

  • For web browser speed testing, click the HowTo link, then click Open All. Click the Commentary link, then click Open All. Click the Diagrams link, then click Open All. Click the TechNotes link, then click Open All. It slowed down Opera for 2-3 minutes on my reasonably fast computer.

    Thread necromancy FTW!

C'mon, you have been here long enough to know better!

  • Couple weeks isn't really necromancy.

But I sure do long for the days when the topics here were sorted by start date. That kept things moving a lot better, always seemed to be more new stuff.

Ummm... So it's OK to you to sleep with a dead person as long as they've only been dead two weeks or less? Sicko!

The rule I always follow is: if they're warm, you're good to perform.  Two weeks is the point at which that industrial-sized microwave oven comes in handy...

When the topic changes to necrophilia, morbiuswilters cannot be kept away. It's like a fat guy willing to run a marathon to get some cake, only with more sweating and heavy breathing.
