What Mobile-Games do you guys play / enjoy?

Continuing the discussion from Game no go on Linux due to suck:

    @Kuro said:

Maybe we should make a "Android games" discussion-topic. Because I'd also be interested to know if anybody out there knows some actually fun android games

You know what, let's just make this topic.

I am actually curious to know if you guys play any mobile games (maybe on commute or boring office hours) and if you have any games you'd recommend.

    Games I have personally enjoyed:

    Monument Valley

It's a puzzle game using optical illusions as a basis. Starts out simple and becomes quite fun. It's not an endless game and will probably be beaten in ~2-3 hours by most. It also has a DLC with ~2 more hours of gameplay.
Monument Valley let's you take control of a character you control by tapping on places it can reach. You can also manipulate the world around by for example spinning or sliding certain parts of the landscape. After you manipulated the world, what counts is the way it looks like. It has a very Esher-like feeling to it.
The graphics are consistent and pleasing to the eyes, imo.
I would definitly reccomend this game. It's not a free game, though I honestly felt like I got my money's worth. (I did buy this game on the recommendation of a friend). I think the price is usually around ~$5(?) and drops to <$1 every once in a while.
Maybe give a short introduction and explain why the game you listed is good?

    Unblock Me

This is one of those "block sliding"-puzzle games. Probably not the first of it's kind, definitly not the first but fun nonetheless.
The premise is pretty simple: You have one block that is surrounded by other blocks you can only move in certain directions and you want that block somewhere else.
What sells me on that game is the amount of levels there are. I think I beat like 7.5k levels on easy and now advanced on intermediate...
The difficulty is all over the place for this game. Some of the levels I swear were super hard randomly. But it usually helped that I only played those on my commute, since stopping the game for a day and then coming back, usually helped figuring out the solution
The game has a mode where you try to solve the puzzles in the least amount of turns neccessary, though I feel that the casual - no restriction - mode is the most fun.
The game runs advertisement. You can probably disable it with a payment.

Filed Under: not gonna plug the mobile game a friend and me may or may not be making :D (which is the other game I would play on my phone right now)

Disclaimer: I am using an Android phone. Feel free to post recommendations for WP or iPhones as well if that suits your fancy

    First Strike is really fun.

  • Winner of the 2016 Presidential Election

There is a mobile port of that game?

    Oh god, the memories...
    Does it control well enough?

Filed Under: Does it also support local multiplayer?

  • area_pol

It controls quite well, maybe even better than on keyboard because they just move towards the place you touch.

  • Word Wonk is my major timewaster right now. I don't know if it exists for platforms other than Windows Phone.

  • @Kuro said:

(It's free if you have an Amazon device.)

Gems of War is best. Bejeweled with monsters and PVP. Kind of. You're always playing the AI, but the teams are all run by humans.

  • Flow Free is a nice little puzzle game (also has iOS version).

    Candy Crush Saga

I used to play Ruzzle, but haven't in a while.

  • FoxDev

They did a variant that is called Flow Bridges (IIRC); that's good too

  • I usually just play Solitaire, specifically Patience Revisited. It works well, costs nothing and has no ads.

  • @blakeyrat said:

Actually any Android device. You just have to install the Amazon app (from their website, not from the Play store) and you can get any game or app from their Amazon Underground section for free, including all IAPs you want. They pay the developer $0.002 for every minute you use an app, out of their own pocket.

It's great. There's a huge amount of otherwise expensive apps there.

  • This has to be the least necessary "um actually" I've seen in a long while.

Me: "It's free if you have an Amazon device."
You: "Um actually! It's free if you have any Amazon device."

Gee, thanks. Your reply really added a lot.

  • FoxDev

The Amazon app is available for all Android devices, not just Amazon ones; I have it on my Nexus 7

  • Oh really?

Well I'm not apologizing. Any post that starts with "um actually" is a lost cause.

  • Notification Spam Recipient

Maybe not necessarily enjoy so much as "I've pretty much completed the game but it hasn't asked me to quit yet so whatever".

I have so much money, I literally can't spend it allhave it overflowing the banner that displays it. I've done all the quests, and will eventually hit the maximum level cap.

Costs money (if you want), but why pay money when you can just wait?

  • Chain Chronicle

I really like to concept of Characters Tower Defense

  • I enjoyed playing the point and click adventure games from http://www.biscuitplacebo.com/games/ like Freja and the Sequel. (they are free, without ads, and doesn't ask for special permissions).

  • codewords lite was a good time waster too

  • The only thing I play is Freecell. Have to restart sometimes to figure a game out, but my current statistics are 61-0.

    • Two Dots
    • Galaga 30th Collection (only on iOS, sadly)
    • Freecell

And various japanese puzzles (Sudoku, Kakuro, Nonograms).

  • The Room and its sequels.

    Shit... there goes my battery...

  • Galaxy Trucker, Catan and Spaceteam are my go to games at the moment. Space team is interesting as it is multiplayer, but you need to be within shouting range...

  • @Kuro said:

[Monument Valley] also has two DLCs with ~2 more hours of gameplay.
I still have the Project (RED) one. Also, gameplay is similar to Fez, but without an asshole of a developer.@blakeyrat said:
    Gems of War is best.
I find myself reaching for Puzzle Quest instead, but given that it was a freemium-focused publisher, I guess Fawkner did what he had to do.

  • Gems of War is made by the people who made Puzzle Quest (although it's closer in style to Puzzle Quest 2. Including inexplicable awful art choices.)

I do not know or care who Fawkner is or what publisher you mean or basically WTF your last sentence is even about.

BTW if you think I'm kidding about the art, look at the image they're using for the current splash screen:

So there's like a super bonus added bonus game mode where you try to figure out how the fuck that head connects to those boobs. (I can only imagine her neck has an L shape.) In the zoomed-out version you get an extra challenge, which is to figure out how the boobs connect to the ass.

  • I also play a Sudoku puzzle that I wrote in HTML/JavaScript and keep on my DropBox. Unfortunately it takes a really long time to generate a puzzle on my old, slow iPhone.

And of course, 4096. I also keep that in my DropBox.

  • Discourse touched me in a no-no place

    As it's relevant here, too.

    @loopback0 said:

I only play mobile games while having a poo at work as there's no mobile or WiFi signal in the cubicles. Normally Angry Birds or Alphabetty Saga.

  • Gah looking at that every time the game loads seriously fucks with my head. It's like an optical illusion.

  • I mostly enjoy a game called Moon Reader, which I have recently stuffed full of DLC from Iain With-An-M Banks (Who really is Iain Without-An-M Banks, or at least was, but he wrote different books under different versions of his name). But there is a folder of actual games right next to it, so let's take a look through that...

It pains me to admit it, but I have been sucked into Fallout Shelter again. Yeah, I know the last time they updated it all of my save games were destroyed. And the time before that, well, all of my save games were destroyed. And then there was that time that my save game was destroyed without an update. But I'm sure it will be different this time. Or it won't, but that would be a good excuse to stop playing again.

For some reason there was a lot of excitement around Star Wars last December, so I picked up Knights of the Old Republic... again. Between all of the different re-releases and bundles which include KOTOR I have bought it more times than The White Album. If they do a mobile version of KOTOR2 then I'll probably buy that too, but only if they can work out how to include the Restored Content Mod.

I do not now, nor have I ever, played Hearthstone.

It's not Nethack, but it is Pixel Dungeon. Maybe it should be Nethack, but if it was then I would probably still be sitting on the subway, riding back and forth across the city while absent-mindedly scribbling "Elbereth" on the windows.

Carcassonne is a good adaptation of the board game. The AI opponents get a little dull, but I can easily start up the game, place it on the table and play against one or more actual humans. Catan has the same T-Shirt and Talisman would like to, but it requires a little more commitment than any other board game short of Squad Leader.

I still have a copy of Plants vs. Zombies on my phone, but after seeing what PvZ2 did to my data usage that game can go die in a fire. And then it can buy "Water gems" for $2 each if it feels that the fire is too hot.

Aralon would really like to be Oblivion. Or maybe Morrowind. It's not, but at least it tries. Unfortunately, it would also like to scale up to displays with more than VGA resolution but can't, so I can only play it with a magnifying glass. I could probably hack around that if I tried, but games are supposed to be something fun that I do instead of work, not more of it.

Avadon has similar issues with scaling, but I'm willing to forgive them since it was designed for a 10" tablet and I'm trying to wedge it into 5" of phone. There's a high school prom metaphor in there somewhere but I'll let someone else provide that.

The Bard's Tale is not really The Bard's Tale, but you can't argue with Cary Elwes. Okay, you can, but that's the narrator's job, and he doesn't do it very well.

Magic DOSBox can, among other things, play the real Bard's Tale. I keep it around because of Master of Magic and Sword of Aragon. There's a copy of Pool of Radiance (Which is not Pool of... Okay, you get the point) which still requires a 1980s era code wheel.

Rounding out the list are rymdkapsel, Star Command, and Forest of Doom, which is a pretty good adaptation of a Choose-Your-Own-Adventure style game book by Ian Livingstone and Steve Jackson (who is not Steve Jackson, but you got tired of this long ago.) I also have Sorcery somewhere, but I finished it long ago and haven't been that interesting in reading^Wplaying it again.

Steve Fawkner (known in-game as Sirrian) is the guy who heads Infinity Plus Two, headed Infinite Interactive when they did all the Puzzle Quests, and ran the team that did all the Warlords games at SSG. 505Games, the publisher/distributor for Gems of War, has a stable of other pay-us-money-for-tokens-for-gil-to-play-this-"free"-game games, and were responsible for forcing I+2 to implement the "you have to pay gold to do battle" limitation they recently dropped. I hate that shit. I paid $7 for PQ2 on my phone, and I got PQ2 on my phone. All of it. Forever.

I've been playing the hell out of this, though mostly via Steam rather than on my phone.

Well the thing is she's clearly not human so they could have given her a plant-body like the Spriggans in Elder Scrolls.

Another brain-buster: where would her legs have to be for her to not being falling forward while in that pose?

  • I cannot believe nobody has raised these ones yet, so I'll bite (I am assuming ya'll are just ashamed for being "joiners" -- or think that everyone is playing them, so no reason to mention them?)

I play 4 games on mobile, only 2 of them regularly, they are:

    https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.kabam.fortress

I am quickly losing interest in Kingdoms of Middle Earth, though.
I tried the Star Wars games, they were all right. I LOVED the Plants Vs. Zombies original game (meh on the sequel), but they had limited replay value ... and .... that's about it. I don't do as much gaming these days as I used to. The last full fledged, real, game I played seriously was the Star Wars MMO.

It's all touch-screen and swiping back and forth. I haven't gotten very far into it due to the itty-bitty-text issues, but it does follow the "relatively-open-world-run-back-and-forth-collecting-bear-butts-for-strange-people" RPG mold. It is because of that blog that I know that Witcher 3 allows you to have sex on the back of a unicorn.

And yeah, Spiderweb Software has been doing great stuff for a long time, It's what gaming could have been if it wasn't all about maximizing ROI.

Technically her legs could go anywhere as long as the roots connected to them went at least three meters underground.

You have informed me that there is an official mobile version of Catan and Carcasonne. You are awesome. And that gives me a reason to use some of that $50 play credit that I had forgotten I got when I bought my Nexus 6P.

Since I visited his blog again I re-read the article with him thanking whoever made up the term "indie" for his industry, so he could stop telling people at parties when they asked what he did that he was a "shareware developer". That post always makes me smiiiiiiiile.

Note that I'm one of the long-term fans who was buying his games back when they were only available on the Mac Classic shareware scene.

Gem match attacking is a pretty fun mechanic.

But I also found this fighting mechanic to be fun as well.

  • Too anime.

  • I can see that. It's one of the reasons it didn't hold my interest.

The cut-scenes are about as bad as a 13-year old's fanfic too. No writing talent.

But, I really appreciate the battle mechanic.

If only someone could adapt it to better content.

  • Tap games are just.... exhausting...

I mean, it's cool to go in when there's something interesting and rare, but other than that, I never touch them.

It's literally grinding for the sake of grinding.

It's not like the buildings and characters operate like a virtual town like in Sims or SimCity.

Yeah, I've tried a couple but there's very little entertaining content.

    Aralon

I got Aralon from a Humble Bundle. I couldn't manage to play it comfortably in a touch screen. Plus RPGs are something you generally sink hundreds or thousands of hours in and that doesn't usually go together with phones and tablets.

Since I already paid for it, it would be nice if they let me play it in my computer, even if it has to be with the same Android-level graphics, but I guess this is a stupid thing to ask in this "post PC era" which is a totally real thing we are in now.
