WTF is wrong with MSIE 7?!

  • Ever since I upgraded to Internet Explorer 7, at least once a week it automatically redirects me to the "Get It Now" page for IE7, and the page tells me I'm already using IE7. It does it both at home and at work. It's starting to really tick me off. The thing that really makes it a WTF is that before I upgraded, IE6 never redirected me to the upgrade page. Now that I'm on the newest version, it keeps wanting me to get it.

  •  Obviously it has become sentient, and is trying to reproduce.

That's your solution to everything.  Car won't start?  Nuke it from orbit.  Shoelace comes untied?  Nuke it from orbit.  Out of coffee?  Nuke Colombia from orbit.

This week has been golden on the forum. People are going to think I've gone really nuts from the laughing I keep doing.

I've never understood why Microsoft does that, they stopped show commercials for the OS that you're installing in Vista finally, but seriously, why would any sane person suggest marketing a license of a product to someone who has a freakishly high chance of already owning a license of said product? I'm certain other companies have done it too, but seriously why?

Have you experienced this as well? I don't use IE7 much these days, but I used it a lot before, and I use it approx once a day now... And I have never seen this behavior. I was assuming this was a problem isolated to his machine.

  • @MasterPlanSoftware said:

On my Vista box only while connected to the internet it will do so. I always use Firefox when I can (exception: Vista box).

  • @Lingerance said:

I use Opera most of the time and only use IE when a f'ed up site doesn't conform to standards (such as our internal time tracker). So, I may open it once or twice a day, then close it when I'm done. It's like my rare visits make it feel neglected, so instead of going to my homepage (time tracker at work; iGoogle at home), it drags me to the "Get It Now" page as revenge.

  • @MasterPlanSoftware said:

That's quite a coincidence, then. My work computer is a Dell Dimension Core 2 Duo on a domain, and my home computer is a custom-built Pentium D on a workgroup. The only thing that's the same between them is XP Pro and IE7, yet they both do that illogical "Upgrade! Oh wait, you already are on it." redirect.

  • Another question: How come I can 'close' and 'close all but this' but cant 'close all' in VS 2008? I feel a churn in the stomach when I'm forced to do the first two in order to accomplish the last.

  • @chebrock said:

I want the "Close All" option, too. Most tabbed windows have that option, but Visual Studio doesn't.

So 1 extra mouse click is a reason to interrupt a thread?

I see other complaints about this after googling it, but I have never seen this behavior.

Have you tried any of the various suggestions out there?

My personal theory is I wonder if because you (probably) don't have IE7 set up as the default browser it is giving it a false positive? Although I have FF3b5 set as default here, and I don't see that happening.

In my case that would be a feat, I have no other browsers. Although in my case I didn't change the default home-page, maybe that could be cause?

  • @Lingerance said:

Well if you didn't change the home page, then how can you complain that IE doesn't go to your home page?

I don't care about it, I was just confirming that it isn't isolated. My complaint is advertising a product from said product, like watching a trailer for a movie before the movie itself.

Right, but my point is that it isn't very surprising...

Perhaps this is a left over from IE6, and since you have not changed the home page this is going to occur. This would not be very surprising to me.

Huh? Tools->Customize..., Commands, Window, Close All Documents.

Yeah, I thought there was something like that somewhere, but I am still too lazy to even do that. Considering close other tabs, and then one click to close the last one is pretty simple.

    Good suggestion though.

    Now back to the thread.

  • @MasterPlanSoftware said:

The main thing I'm seeing is "Windows Update triggers it because Microsoft wants everyone to upgrade NOW" and the resolution is to disable checking for updates. Since I prefer to keep things up-to-date, that's not an option. Oh well.

Hmm didn't quite catch that. Ok. I have no idea. I could explain away Lingerance's occurence, but I am confused with yours.

  • @MasterPlanSoftware said:

    I am confused with yours.

That's why the subject of this thread is so exclamatory. Nothing is the same between the computers except the OS. However, if Windows Update automatically resets the upgrade redirect every time an update comes through, that would explain it. But, it should be doing it in a different manner. Hijacking my browser is not funny. Internet Explorer won't respond until it fully loads -- which includes most of the home page. So, I can't even abort the thing. Instead, if they insist on dragging people to the upgrade page, add an Internet Explorer Version Check application to the update system. Its sole job can be to verify the IE version and set the flag as needed.

  • @Lingerance said:

That's happened to me before; I can't remember which movie it was but it was some years ago in a then-new small-city theatre: obviously a mistake on the part of the projectionist. This cinema had only recently been upgraded from 1 screen to having 4 screens.

  • I've been using IE7 over a year and never experienced anything remotely close to this. The only difference is that I always install it manually early in my installation, before I do MS updates. I would install IE7 after I got all my device drivers in. If the update failed, kinda like MPS seemed to be saying, I could see it causing this issue. I run both XP and Vista on different machines, and I never seen that behavior before.

Perhaps one could suggest you're doing it wrong?

  • @MasterPlanSoftware said:

Actually it took all of 15 seconds, but the command does not appear in the tab, but in a button. Is it the end of the world, no. Is it more shit design from microsoft, yes. What lunatic would not add close, close all but this, and close all into the right click of a tab in an IDE. Sorry, its crap.

I call your attention to IE7, FF3b5,  TextPad, UltraEdit, and actually any other tab based program I can think of ATM.

If they put every option that could be useful to anyone at any time, you would also be the first one to cry about that poor design. This seems to be the best compromise I can think of, and it seems to be reflected in all the other applications I have open right now. Of course, you are probably right and the whole world is wrong...

  • I performed an upgrade from IE6 to IE7 a while back for a friend's computer, and never had that problem; perhaps some cookie doesn't get set if you install IE7 from scratch? (No, I wouldn't have used a browser cookie to achieve this effect either, but I wouldn't put it past Microsoft right now.)
