I'm not going to say no-one should ever own a gun, but why choose an AK-47? Surely a Glock 17 or a Beretta M9 would be a more suitable home defence firearm.Hmm... maybe this should have been a new thread...

Why not own one?
Of course, using one for home defense, especially in populated areas, is a bit ridiculous. The danger of overpenetration with 7.62x39 is pretty high.
Surely a Glock 17 or a Beretta M9 would be a more suitable home defence firearm.

Actually, a shotgun makes a lot of sense, if you use shells loaded with rock salt like in Kill Bill; not sure I'd want to risk using bird shot.

The advice i received from a friend doing law enforcement training:
"If you want to have a gun for home defense, be sure you are prepared to use it to kill another human. If you pull that gun without being willing to pull the trigger it's useless, and if you pull that trigger, shoot to kill. By definition firing a gun is using deadly force, and if you try to wound or disable with it you are admitting that you did not believe deadly force was required. The lawyers will have a field day with that."
there was more advice, but that's the most salient part right now i think. A gun is deadly force, and the law treats deadly force, even in the case of protecting your property and life, deadly seriously.... and you should too.
-
Ah.
Well, in that case, screw the rock salt and the bird shot; go straight for the deer slug.

deer slug or buckshot was his advice, yes.

At risk of being d ...
I'm not going to say no-one should ever own a gun, but why choose an AK-47?
Why not? The first gun I purchased myself was a PTR-91, which shoots a .308 round. Not exactly a home defense firearm, but good for targets and usable for hunting.
Surely a Glock 17 or a Beretta M9 would be a more suitable home defence firearm.
Nah, those are better for self defense outside the home (though I currently favor the Glock 19). For at home, a shotgun with tactical shells is better.
-
The Glock is shit, why don't you just buy a Tec-9

yo dawg can you shoot a Tec-9 sideways nah man you can't. word.

For hunting or fun on the range, an AK is a decent choice; cheap, simple, and reliable. It's just, as you say, it's not the best suited to home defence.

Mounted turrets are the way to go. Plus pressure-sensitive pit traps, barbed wire staircases, and electrified door handles.

INB4 title edited to include and people suddenly muting the topic.

Are you Home Alone?
If you count corpses-- then no. I'm not alone.

With an AK-47? Fuck you deer - I'm pumping rounds in your ass 'til the body stops twitching...
-
Or you could set it to semi-auto and fire one round at a time

Judging by all the action movies I've watched, the body won't stop twitching until you stop pumping rounds into it.
-
With an AK-47?
An AK-47 would actually make a pretty decent deer rifle. Most of them are semi-auto anyway, so it would only be one bullet that you would be firing. Ballistically, it is pretty equivalent to my favorite centerfire deer round, the .30-30 Winchester.
-
9mm are nice, but they'll most like punch through people and/or walls. I'd prefer a .45 for the stopping power(it will knock you flat on your ass). A shotgun w/collapsible stock would also be nice.
-
Or you could set it to semi-auto and fire one round at a time
Given the topic, I'd assumed a civilian version thus semi-auto was implied (unless you live in one of the states that lets you own full-auto with the correct license). It's easy enough to keep shooting, at least until your finger gets tired.
-
Fair enough.

with the correct licenseand you have at least $20K to waste)FTFY.

Sure you can. But any time you shoot sideways with a semiauto you'd better make sure you're wearing a shirt with a high neckline. That goes double for women.
-

Mental note, never mess with @abarker
-
I know several people who hunt with an SKS, which is basically an older, semi-auto only version of the AK-47 using the same cartridge. Works fine as long as they aren't using milsurplus ball ammo.
-
Or you could set it to semi-auto and fire one round at a time
If you bought one in the US it's already set that way.
-
But do you need a 30 round magazine for that? The ammo capacity of "assault-style" rifles is usually what gets objected to when people point out that they can be used for the same things more standard rifles can.
-
-

...or until the magazine empties out. Your typical 20- or 30-round mag, that's a couple of seconds.
-
But do you need a 30 round magazine for that?
What happens if you're attacked by a bear or three while out deer hunting, eh?
-
No, you don't need a standard capacity magazines for deer hunting. Is there a point in there?
-
Not particularly, that just seems to be the standard argument against that particular type of firearm (you get it with handguns too).
Edit: notice that even with a higher capacity magazine, no one says you have to actually use all those bullets.
-
3 notifications? @aliceif @abarker
I tried moving twice and got 500 errors because @Yamikuronue had already moved them (apparently). Unfortunately, gives the notifications even then …
-
9mm are nice, but they'll most like punch through people and/or walls.
Only if you are using a FMJ, in which case a .45 will do the same thing with a bigger hole. Try using a hollow point round for personal defense.
-
The entire argument against standard capacity magazines is bullshit. It matters very little.
-
(unless you live in one of the states that lets you own full-auto with the correct license).
Full-auto is restricted at the national level, not the state.
-
Sure but dealing with things like mental health issues and social problems that underlie much gun violence is hard. Arguing about how many bullets you can put in them, is easy.
-
Fair enough. I'm Canadian, so much of what I "know" about US gun laws, I pull out of my ass for effect.
-

Just sooooo much wrong with this post.
-
The capacity really matters fuck-all though.
-
What happens if you're attacked by a bear or three while out deer hunting, eh?
You win an Oscar.
-
How responsible would a person be for harm caused to intruders by automated defenses?
I don't know about US/Canada, but NL is pretty extreme - as I understand it, if you've got a leaky roof, and the intruder slips in the wet patch on the floor and sprains his ankle, he will sue you and he will win. Though you're unlikely to be liable for more than medical costs.
IANAL.

Want.

but why choose an AK-47?
Don't you think your Mosin Nagant, SKS, and AK-74 would be a bit lonely with out its comrade, the AK-47? Sheesh.
I'm not saying the AK-47 is the first Russian rifle to buy, but it should at least be the fourth. Well, maybe fifth, because really, what sense is there in having just a single Mosin.
-

If I had Greek Jewish Gypsy ancestors I would think we were long lost relatives.
