You know what? WORTH IT!

  • I haven't been to the theatre in AGES. I HATE going to the theater these days. I would rather wait the few months and watch things at home.

FUCK the idiots in the theater with their god damn phones out, and the idiots who will NOT shut up, and the idiots who bring their kids to R-rated movies (at night) and let them run around the theater, and the idiots who apparently haven't eaten all week and choose to catch up on those missed calories right behind me -- for the whole movie -- by inhaling an epic amount of food in rustling wrappers, for the whole movie.

I have been saying for a long time now that concurrent release for home viewing of current movies should be happening. I am glad to see some traction is FINALLY happening with that. I honestly couldn't care less if the theater business died tomorrow.

  • Are they going to be nazis about you letting a handful of your friends come watch it with you? If you can split that $50 a few ways, it doesn't sound so outrageous anymore.

$50 seems like a reasonable price to pay to avoid all of that bullshit. I hate theaters.

    Try #2

Two things: good seats, and good hours. If you rush for Friday evening premiere, you have no one but yourself to blame.

But surely a DVD only costs like $15, so $50? He clearly wants the price to include a small drink and a few bits of popcorn too

More likely he's including multiple movie tickets cause multiple people are watching. Though I'm unsure how much license theatres typically pay per viewer; anyone?

  • It's quite a lot. Over here, up to 53% of the ticket's price go to the distributor.

The best night out at the movies I have ever had was on a Super Bowl Sunday. We were the only ones in the theater.

  • Meh, tickets in my area can routinely be around $15-20, add in the price of gas plus wear and tear on the car, and that is close enough to $50 for me to call it even. Even if it wasn't, STILL WORTH IT!

I hate going to the theatre.

  • .... I mean ... how ... would they possibly enforce that? I think that is part of the $50 price tag 😃

  • No such thing as good seats/hours in my area. I gave up a long time ago.

  • @Vaire said:

.... I mean ... how ... would they possibly enforce that?

Like most of those laws: Selectively, against people they want to make an example of.

  • Good luck with that one. It would require gaining entry to private homes to determine viewers. And, holy crap, how would one handle an "open floor plan" home with people mingling in the kitchen next to the living room where the movie was playing, who weren't "watching" the movie, but were in "viewable range?"

Yeah, no. I think they will just charge their $50 and be happy with it. Sucks for you if you are single and want to watch movies alone, but in that case, if the price is your motivating factor, the regular theatre is still an option.

I would guess that on the rare occasions that the wife and I go to the theater, it is near enough to $50 as to not make a difference. As a bonus, when I need to take a piss I can pause it.

Now that I think about it, if I were able to watch new releases at home, that would cause me to have to piss quite a bit, because I could drink more.

  • @Vaire said:

Private homes where the owners have signed a contract full of fine print and put a $150 black box next to their TV...

  • In Australia or England, yeah okay, maybe. In gun toting 'Merica? Good luck with that.
We shoot Trick 'or' Treaters in 'Merica -- through the door, after a knock.

I know I wouldn't want to be the one in charge of enforcement for that.

  • Like I said, they'd just find an egregious violation to make an example of. Surely you see how the "I just had a few friends over, what's the big deal" angle could be abused to rake in huge profits. Where do you draw the line between a bunch of buddies all watching a movie together in someone's home, and someone who's running an unlicensed movie theater?

    2 tickets: $18. 1 popcorn: $10. 2 small beverages: $12.

Double the ticket prices if you want a screen bigger than a postage stamp and a sound system that isn't made of tin cans. They call it imax, but thats a fucking lie, it's the same physical dimension every theater screen had 10 years ago.

Tip: If I'm going to the theater, the screen had best not dimensionally fit on any of my living room walls.

Going to movies ain't a good deal these days.

  • Well, regarding those prices, they don't have much of a choice - it's the snacks and beverages they're making money on.

Yeah, nothing is a good deal anymore. The wife and I had a date night Friday. We went out to a mid-priced restaurant, had two beers each and the bill was $80 with tip.

  • Garbage Person

That was the tab for my Saturday 'totally not a date' bar and a movie thing. Plus a few bucks on air hockey at the arcade and some hella expensive whiskey at her place and a couple of minimum uber fares.

The movie was awful. Unequivocally the worst ever. Only time I've ever disagreed with Rotten Tomatoes.

    Which movie?

$80 wasn't even our total tab for the date. That was just the restaurant. I don't know if we can go out without it costing more than $100.

  • Garbage Person

The Witch. Rotten Tomatoes said it was fantastic, unsettling slow building horror. Maaaaybe if you're a god fearing fundamentalist Christian.

What it actually delivered was "People actually thought the world worked this way in the 17th century! That's adorable!" with characters so foreign to my mindset and reality that I had an easier time identifying with the goats. And an easier time with the goats English, too.

    Obligatory:

My opinion on the topic: cinemas used to be the only reasonable way to view movies, but when TVs became bigger and better and online subscription services appeared, they lost that privilege. Now the only thing they have that houses can't have is the huge screen and professional sound system, so they're going to have to sell you that if they want to stay in business. Since loud rude viewers ruin that experience and make people want to stay home (as evidenced in this thread), sooner or later they're going to have to kick those customers if they want to keep the rest.

  • :belt_onion:

Good news, this means torrents with non-eye-raping quality will be available right after the theatrical release. 🚜

  • Wait, the toilet isn't dumping into that ... whatever it is thing of green and brown shit which apparently is popcorn and Mt. Dew if you scroll down far enough to read it?

  • Which is exactly why this won't happen any time soon.

  • Three bucks says they've tried to figure out some way to embed your credit card number into the film with stenography so if you make any copies they can trace it back to you and come rape your firstborn.

  • @Vaire said:

Or just look for the Facebook events where someone is inviting 30 people to their home to watch the new movie.

I would expect that. I mean right now, on the day of the theatrical release I have an option of viewing it in a theatre or a CAMRip. I have promised myself to never ever watch CAMRips again, so it becomes a choice of watching in the theatre today or watching it at home in a month. If this happens, there will be no incentive to go theatres apart from dates for people like me.

  • @Polygeekery said:

That doesn't seem at all unreasonable to me. $20 each for the meals (which would be fairly cheap around here, but I live near a major city) and $5 each for the beers is $60. Tax and tip adds at least 25%, assuming the waiter/waitress was good and you aren't a complete asshole, so that's over $75.

  • @anotherusername said:

  • One cannot present anything from Facebook, as proof in a U.S. court of law. One would still need to show up at the event, either with the cops, or with the ability to record proof, to present to the court. Otherwise, at least in the U.S. ... no dice. All the event organizer would have to do otherwise, is simply claim the event notice was a joke.

Two things: good seats, and good hours. If you rush for Friday evening premiere, you have no one but yourself to blame.

I've taken to doing Saturday matinees. The first showing is almost always cheaper, and there's only typically one or two movies a year that'll be swamped that early.

Plus one of the local indies has started putting captioning on the first showing of each movie on weekends, which is really nice if you have anyone hard of hearing. (It's even nice if you're not, because almost inevitably there's one or two lines uttered too quietly, or against loud background music.)

There were some stories last year saying that on some movies in the US, the distributor takes up to 90% of the ticket price the first few days, with the percentage going down over time. The claim is that's why popcorn and soda have gotten so pricy--because it's the only money the theater gets. I don't know how true that is.

  • Discourse touched me in a no-no place

    @Vaire said:

Really? Because when I lived in DC I managed--as I said in a previous post, Saturday matinees are usually near-empty. Any other city should be similar--all the ones I've ever lived in were.

Now if you're out in the boonies, I could see it being more of a problem.

We're talking about the same industry that wormed its way out of needing to prove that illegal distribution actually occurred in order to successfully sue for copyright infringement. Remember?

Which is most likely what would happen.

I guess it was someone else who mentioned having recording devices in everyone's home so that the movie studios would know how many people were in your living room, and I still had that in my mind when I replied to you.

My point was that it wouldn't require any kind of massive surveillance system1 to find a few examples to go after. It's like when you hear about the NFL going after Super Bowl parties; they don't drive around every town and look in people's living room windows, they just look for the public announcements.

1 Leaving aside the argument about Facebook already being a massive surveillance system.

Wow, Americans actually are morons. In Poland it's not such a big problem.

Seriously though, Why would you go to the movies right after a film is released? Wait for a bit, 2-3 weeks, and you're golden. It's good to be patient.

'Cause let's be honest. Movies look shitty on small screens. End of story.

    Case in point: Hateful eight

    http://static5.techinsider.io/image/55cba8f92acae7a6098bf871-1384-692/hateful 8.jpg

Inb4: those images don't show how awful Heightful is for home screening. 2.76:1 aspect ratio, 70 mm film. Unfortunately, although you get this feeling that it's extremely home-unfriendly movie through the whole screening (or at least the first 2.5 hours), it's hard to come by a decent image in GI. Shit.

  • Good thing that
