But then from what I hear Safari on Windows is pretty much a WTF in itself!

  • Last week I updated a mac mini and it downloaded a _firmware update for the aluminum keyboard_. That made me go WTF! I had no idea that keyboards these days shipped with user-updateable firmware, never mind the possibility of failing at keyboard design so badly that it requires a firmware update to begin with.

  • I got the same keyboard firmware update for my iMac - apparently they need to handle additional keys that may grow out of the keyboard at any moment...

Oddly enough, I was ready to return my Logitech Cordless Wave keyboard because 2 keys didn't work (Context Menu key and Scroll Lock, both accessed through a FN-key combination).  Not that those keys were super-important, but it was the principle of the thing.

Imagine my surprise when I updated the firmware (which lacked a useful changelog) and the 2 broken keys suddenly started working.

  • MacBook Pro Keyboard Firmware Update

y MacBook Pro has an annoying keyboard behavior.  If I haven't typed in a few minutes (but kept the computer awake with mouse activity) then it will ignore the next keystroke. So half the time when I start typing it drops the first letter and I have to go back to fix it.

A few weeks ago Apple released a firmware update for the MacBook Pro.  Great!  So I downloaded and ran it, the computer reboot into special firmware update mode and... froze.  I hard rebooted and the update seemed to finish successfully.  But the dropped keystroke behavior remained.

So I searched Apple's forums for how to check that the firmware update was really applied and discovered that this update was thoroughly botched.  Dozens of people complained that the problem remained, but even worse there were dozens of people for whom the update causes repeated hard freezes.    WTF!

  •  TRWTF is that the only Apple app I have installed is iTunes + QT, and Safari still pops up in the updater. Thanks for the Microsoft-esque push, Apple. My respect is being liquidated faster than warehouse mattresses.

Agreed.  I was wondering why I had Safari installed on my laptop last week.  I usually just let the iTunes/QT updater do its thing.  Then I noticed Safari in the list when I did the update on my desktop.

    Bullshit.

  • I can't (haven't tried) how to apple to stop updating all together. I just don't care enough for the updates let alone seemingly ALL THE TIME.

    Uninstall Apple Software Update?

Safari on Windows isn't a WTF. It conforms quite well to the Apple Human Interface Guidelines.

    Oh, wait. . .

Except it lets you maximize the window.  What kind of crazy world is this??

Yes, and the microsoft updater doesn't try to push pieces of software onto your computer?

Admittedly Apple should have software you don't already have installed unchecked in the list.

Actually the quickest way to flash the firmware is to ground the keyboard's metal casing to the active pin of your computer's power plug, then press any key for at least 5 seconds.

I tried, but mine doesn't have an any key.

    Foiled again!

Hmm... try again but if you still can't find the any key, wrap it in foil (aluminum of course, since the keyboard is made of that) (or aluminium if you live in a more civilised place :P) while it's still wired up.  That should fix any problems.

I hate how every time you install QuickTime OR a QuickTime update that it installs Apple Software Update, even if you choose to have it not install!! Arrgghh!

Because that's the nature of Community Server. It doesn't help that we've discovered a WTF in the software and are busy exploiting the hell out of it.

Doesn't help?  Hey, my goal is to add so many tags the autocomplete stops working and you can actually type!

Bwahahaha! As well as making the low-speed (partial DSL or worse) users really feel the pain on each view.

Awsome metaphore. I need to remember that one.

Also apple IS trying to be like MS... They are pretty evil specialy with how they alow development for the iPhone. Apple is also pushing for their version of MS-Office like infrastructure where they give you all sorts of apple software for managing email, contacts, calandar, web browser, itunes, etc... and want to ensure you buy everything apple. F-ing price markup is insane on apple hardware. Don't think MS is evil and doing something special nobody else is. MS is just one of many, infact Bill Gates is not such an evil person, his will is that 90+% of his fortune will be donated to charity uppon his death.

Did anyone for a minute believe that Apple is a "good hearted" company? The best we got is Google, and they are not angels either.

Is it starting to occur to you that there are no 'good hearted' companies? The whole idea is for them to be greedy, and to do anything in their power to obtain wealth. Expecting anything less of them is foolish and naive.

    Especially publicly owned companies.

Even non-profit organizations love the moneyz. It's just a more lucrative game when the company isn't allowed to make money.

Yes, but the officers of a public company can actually be punished for failing to think first and foremost of the value of the stock.

Which is why I hate public companies. I'm tired of being blamed (as well as everyone else in the office) by a certain officer for the revenue not increasing 20% year over year. WTF is a developer supposed to do about it?
