ELI5: Adult Coloring Books
-
Continuing the discussion from The Continuing WtfCorp Saga:
Sadly, adult coloring books are not as fun as they sound.
I've actually been wondering about that for a while. The local Barnes & Noble stores have an entire shelf each of them. What's the big attraction? Why not do real art instead?
-
I guess some people like them as a pastime?
Why not do real art instead?
Probably for the same reason people do sudokus instead of doing real math.

Why not do real art instead?
You could fingerpaint in the book with feces.

That fails the Rush Limbaugh1 test.
1If Rush Limbaugh can do it, it's not art.

I suspect stuff like that would fail the analogous @boomzilla test. But I think I'd rather pick my nose on the bus than color.

It's a meditative activity: a simple, repetitive motion, soothing colors, and just a hint of creativity to keep your brain more engaged than say, counting beads on a string or something. That's supposed to be very soothing, as it satisfies the urge to be productive or make progress on something (like video game achievements) while consisting of simple, repetitive motions which are calming to the brain.
Playing a "podcast game" like Bejeweled will give you the same effect, I think.
-
Coloring Ninja Turtles or Batman or whatever is a blast. Box of crayons and some broadly outlined scenes and I'm good. Those adult coloring books look fucking stressful. Too many tiny, detailed spaces to deal with.
-
Yeah, I prefer Bejeweled myself. The coloring books, well.... I keep thinking I'm coloring wrong
-
-
Maybe we should trade...
-
What's the big attraction? Why not do real art instead?
I have a sheet I'm working on. I've probably put 10 hours into it in the last few months. Why not do real art? Because that takes talent and technique, which I have little of. My technique is improving though.
Either way, I just do it to relax and make something nice.
-
Also: Apparently demons.

a simple, repetitive motion
Don't know about you, but for me staying inside the lines is as much of a challenge as doing a hard Sudoku, if not bigger.
I'm the kind of person who's been almost flunking the art class since elementary school.

@ben_lubar, we told you to stop posting your porn.

Who cares about the colouring book, the most important thing is to avoid going on the bus.
Maybe your busses are better than ours, busses in the UK are shit.

...that you handily found on the bus, alongside a steaming puddle of piss.

NSFW if your employers are particularly prudish. Safer then Ben's dot-to-dot though:

Honestly, I can't remember the last time I was on a public bus around here. I do remember one memorable time in college, however, when a friend of mine puked and we had to carry him home.

It doesn't take as much talent as you would think, unless you want someone to buy the results. Getting more technique requires mindful practice.
-
That's made my Friday afternoon!

-
Sure, but I'm more interested in practicing mindfulness than mindful practice right now.
I'm not against doing real art, but I just want a simple project sometimes.

I like how she used the archaic spelling of "Jhanas" and is still so off.
Omg I'm accidentally concentrating! And it brings clarity! Burn the witch!

That doesn't look like dwarves, so it's not Ben's porn.
Plus Ben's porn would probably have been needlessly much more convoluted.
-
He's been looking at it so long he doesn't even see the dots any more. He just sees dwarf, brunette, elgiu

Which one? The book of blank pages, with a higher price when used, or the destroying of one of your childhood programmes? If the latter, here's another if you hadn't seen it yet...

FFS, I didn't even notice that!
