Someone back me up here-- Bethesda changing price of Fallout 4 Season Pass

  • Ok, so read or skim this press release:

    Since I know you didn't, here's a summary:

    • Bethesda is adding more DLC to their plans for Fallout 4
    • As a result, they're raising the price of the Season Pass from $30 to $50
    • Existing season pass owners, or those who buy it before March 1st get it for $30
    • If you get selected for a DLC's beta, you get that DLC (including cheevos) for 100% free

    Now there's some people in Twitter saying this is an awful deal, and I had this following conversation:

    Am I crazy here?

  • No, you're totally in the right here. They're adding more content than they originally announced and the season pass has been available for months, not to mention the fact that it's still fucking available at $30. It's weird that they're raising the price, but it's not like it's unjustified.

    never heard of the game, but yay?

    so? in a year or so the price will drop again to get the people who won't pay the new price, and a bunch of people will get it then because not only will it be the same deal buyt the DLC will actually have been created by then.

    @blakeyrat said:

    sounds fair.

    cool. you do volunteer test work for them and they give you the thing you tested for them for free.... seems like a fair deal.

    show me someone who isn't in one way or another and i'll show you a truely crazy person.

    StriderMeow (seriously?) does appear to be using the typical self-entitlist logic used by so many people that think that everything should be free instead of being priced to both cover production costs and provide profit to invest in future products.

  • Funny thing is, people probably would have had less of a problem with it if they had left the original season pass alone and released a new one for the additional DLC (or just had it excluded from the SP).

  • I'm trying to think of what else they could have done. I've come up with:

    • Don't raise the price just swallow the additional DLC development costs (bad for them)
    • Don't bother making additional DLCs at all, keep to the original plan (bad for customers)
    • Create a "Season Pass 2" for $20 which contains the DLC not in "Season Pass 1" (confusing and bizarre for everybody, plus it fucks-over everybody who pre-ordered Season Pass 1 when the description said it contained all DLC)

    Turns out this guy is really confused, and his brain's off in some place my brain can't follow:

    Apparently he thinks that Bethesda raising the price of the Season Pass means they're going bankrupt, or... some... thing? I'm confused.

    These idiot people, maybe. I'd have been pissed-off because the Season Pass I bought specifically said it contained all future DLC for Fallout 4.

    Seriously, though, I don't see how that could be considered better at all.

  • @blakeyrat said:

    He thinks they made enough money already and don't deserve more. No, that doesn't make any sense.

  • I suspect the thinking is consistent with the guy's world view... "Corporation = Evil, therefore Corporation requesting more money for more work is being a greedy bastard"

    But yes, I agree that he's coming at this case from the wrong angle.

  • You're right, I suppose, but I can't get riled up about the argument.

    The whole thing will be available as a $5 GOTY edition in a Steam few years down the road, so that's when us casual gamers will buy it. This whole angst is for hard core gamers only.

  • I won't generally buy season passes for DLC for the same reason I won't preorder most things. I want to know what I am getting is worth the money.

    That said, Bethesda are being very reasonable about this. If you have your season pass already, nothing changes. If you don't want to pay the higher price, buy it in the next couple of weeks and you are good. Otherwise, pay more but get more. I would argue that they would have been within their rights to up the price at the same time as the announcement. Giving a grace period is a good way for them to get paid fairly for their work, but not screw over their fans.

    @blakeyrat said:

    For what it's worth, thats pretty much the same price as the game itself, right?
    From what I understand, they add a lot of content instead of the "usual 10 different costumes" other companies like to package into DLC, so thats good.
    But it begs the question: Is the amount of content they package in DLC enough to warrant the price of buying a second game? Especially since DLC usually uses a lot on assets and story elements previously used in the game*, hence requiring less work to design and implement.

    In general raising the price of your Season Pass is just a move not many companies have done, so you can expect some backlash (even if some of the points are trivial / seem confused).

    Personally I don't like Season Passes and raising your Season Pass price because you add more DLC feels like bad planning on Bethesda's side. But it's their game and their choice to make.

    *Disclaimer: I am talking in a general sense. I have not played FO4 nor its DLCs!

    Eh, Season Pass are wares like any other, if their prices can go down they can go up as well. But it really makes you think what the game companies mean by "season pass" these days, since their whole point is that they're sort of a guarantee to the players.

    Also makes you wonder if they haven't caught on to this:

    @cartman82 said:

    and want people who would otherwise wait to rush into buying the game before the price hike.

    What I cannot comprehend is that at least one person in this conversation thinks that raising price requires any justification at all.

    Percentage-wise, it's a big jump. While not an unreasonable increase, it's not entirely surprising that now they have to deal with the fallout over said price hike.

    This post is deleted!

  • On the other news they did remove the need for Season Pass for TESO last year. People purchased the "Tamriel Unlimited" game package can play it for free after the one time payment.

    Guess the "microtransaction" strategy does not make enough profit for other games they own to follow suit.

  • @Kuro said:

    You haven't played any bethesda games? you need to at least play skyrim and fallout 4.

    Bethesda generally releases huge ammounts of content on it's DLCs, Skyrim has 3 big DLCs:

    • Dawnguard: 2 new factions, a new storyline where you can pick a side, the best follower in the game (as in, the only one who does not feel like a robot), 3 new medium sized areas and a new type of ranged weapon, at least 3 new shouts, one of which invokes a skeletal dragon.
    • Dragonborn: (ok, I never got around playing this one, so this is really incomplete) 2 new medium sized areas, a new storyline, several new shouts and dragon riding (heard it's not as awesome as it sounds tho).
    • Hearthfire: 3 new player houses that can be built by the player. You can customize your houses with several different room and decoration options, this one even involves gathering of resources. You also can adopt children.

    (yeah, I'm partial to dawnguard, that's why I can describe it so much better)

    I don't know what the DLC for fallout 4 will be, but the base game is already amazing, I'm sure it will be worth.

    Or all the people that would have bought the Season Pass have done so, and now they're chasing the long tail

    Fallout isn't exactly indie anymore...

  • @WernerCD said:

    Accalia lies.

  • Elder Scrolls Online is all Zenimax retardedness. I don't think Bethesda has much, if anything, to do with that game.

    Anyway, they're using the same payment method that, for example, Guild Wars 2 and Diablo III have already proved successful, so.

    Too bad they've still fucked up their Steam integration so badly. Even if I've bought ESO on their website, there's no way to get it in my Steam library. (Steam would let them just give me a key to plug in, Zenimax is too incompetent to offer one.)

  • @Sentenryu said:

    one of which invokes a skeletal dragon.

    You mean Durnehviir? He's not skeletal, he's covered in pus and dripping slime. He looks disgusting. It also adds those weird cobra-hooded dragons in the snow elf area.

    You also missed that long quest about Atherium shards, and the huge dwarven dungeon that goes with it. (Unless I don't know what you mean by "medium sized areas", there's the Dawnguard castle, the vampire lord castle, the cave leading to the snow elf land/city, the snow elf land/city itself, about 4-5 new normal-sized dungeons, the large Dwarven Atherium shard dungeon...)

    @Sentenryu said:

    Dragonborn: (ok, I never got around playing this one, so this is really incomplete)

    It's the best one! Pfft.

    My favorite was still Shivering Isles in Oblivion. That was like a brand new $50 game sold as a DLC, and it was amazing.

    And BTW, this all is why I'm so annoyed with this random Twitter person. Of ALL the companies in gaming, Bethesda is BY FAR the most honest, most ethical, out there. BY FAR. So it really rubs me raw when someone's accusing them of ripping people off. They've never done that. They never will. It's not in their culture; they'll go bankrupt and die first.

  • I kinda recall he being refered to as a skeletal dragon, but I think I just got confused, he does look more like a zombie than a skeleton.

    @blakeyrat said:

    I never got to that part, I think I never fully finished any bethesda game, even tho I do come back to them from time to time, there's aways more content.

    I think my problem is that I aways create a new character and want to finish something before doing the DLC, in the case of dragonborn, I wanted to finish the main quest first, but I aways wander off after blackreach.

    Shivering Isles could very well be a standalone game, but bethesda games generally include far more than that, and they needed to make the player character into some sort of chosen one, as every other elders scrolls game does that.

    I second this. It's the only company I thrust. I just hope Bethesda Softworks is as good as Bethesda Game Studios and Dishonored 2 comes as good as the first one.

    is it too much to ask for you to put the @ at the front of my name so i know when you are badmouthing me?

    oh, apparently it is, because you didn't have the decency to do it.

  • Just a second ago in the other thread you said you wanted MORE insults.

    And as I've said a hundred times, I don't use the @ thing because it doesn't work, not because I have some kind of moral objection to it.

    Anyway, we all know you're doing the "playful" (read: fucking irritating), "oh it's mainstream and hugely popular and therefore I am pretending to not have heard of it to maintain my hipster cred!" If that ain't a lie, I don't know what is.

  • You pretending to not know about the Fallout games is such an obvious lie it is not believable that you were not aware of the new one. @blakeyrat was just pointing out to @WernerCD that you were obviously lying as they missed it (somehow).

  • @accalia said:

    What usually happened was I'd type the @ sign and then the auto-complete menu would SLOOOOWLY pop up and by the time it did I was already like three words ahead and typing the word "wanker" and the auto-complete would complete to @wanker or whatever and then the notification would go to the wrong person when I hit "submit" and there's no way to "un-notify" a person so it's a particularly destructive bug, and fuck the whole feature.

    On systems where it works, like the Confluence and JIRA I use at work, I use it. Where it doesn't work, I don't use it. So don't fucking blame me, blame Atwood and his retard cronies.

    Hey, you love nothing more than doing free QA for them. If you're so concerned, be all open source-y and get into their shit and fix it.

    so you are using that as an excuse to badmouth a person behind their back? what an asshole.

    if you're gonna badmouth someone the least you should do is put the effort into making sure they know about it.

    so it takes extra effort, fuck it, you're already being a dick with the insults, there's no reason to sink to the level of utter asshole by not letting the peron you are insulting know about it.

    BULL.

    SHIT.

  • Discourse touched me in a no-no place

    All I can say is I tried to make a joke about how I learned how to type @yamikuronoe because the autocomplete was so shitty, except that since there's no gray text around the name apparently I didn't, and then I deleted it.

    Honestly I don't see why you let him continue to get under your skin. You're wrestling with the pig, kiddo: every time you act upset, you're giving him what he wants.

  • @blakeyrat said:

    It does work, although like much of Discourse, it works only sometimes (most of the time, in this case), inconsistently, and very slowly. You can just type @accalia and ignore the autocomplete entirely, just like you did without the @, and it will (eventually) turn into a notification.
