To me, Australia is about the great outdoors and getting away from it all. This might not be compatible with geekhood (or being American) but a city is a city IMO. Certainly Sydney doesn't do it for me. Could be anywhere. You could do some surfy stuff I guess though not sure about that (I personally don't do it). You should also be able to do a bunch of cool stuff like paragliding, diving or snorkling the Great Barrier Reef and all sorts if you plan your time carefully.
I'd recommend hiring a car and going for a drive into the bush to get in some hiking or even something like this: http://www.binnaburralodge.com.au/Binna-Burra/About-Us from Brisbane.
Get yourself to Uluru, either by plane or get yourself part way there & drive it. It's around 3000 km of driving from either city so probably not worth driving the entire thing, though there will be some fun little places on the way.
Depending on what you consider geeky, some of the mines are pretty spectacular (giant trucks and other supersized equipment) but again, not necessarily close to either city.
From Sydney there is the historic Parkes telescope which was instrumental in the moon landing but I can't say I know if it's worth the ~400km, though I suspect it might be a fun roadtrip depending on what you're into.
Most bits of Oz I have visited have a recent, but interesting history if you care to stop and take a look.
There's a ton of stuff to do but without doing the entire google thing for you, I'd just recommend trying to get away from the cities and enjoying the unique landscape and wildlife. If you're up for it, put some ads up or look online and hook up with a few fellow travellers, hire a van and see where it goes.

I probably wouldn't say that it's not compatible with geekhood, but it's definitely compatible with being American. Camping, fishing, hiking, hunting, skiing etc are all very popular American activities (not that every American will enjoy them, of course). And there is a huge variety of those across America: mountains, desert, swamp, forest, beach, open plan, etc.

You do know he had two movies after Young Einstein? Mr Accident was his Fatal Mistake. Reckless Kelly probably didn't have much appeal to non-Australians due to it being about a decendant of our most famous bushranger (Ned Kelly).
To the OP: do the Sydney Harbour Bridge climb! In Brisbane go to the Mana bar. Too bad you won't be here for the Zombie Walk.

- The XXXX Brewery tour which I found pretty interesting
- The surrealism exhibition at GoMA
- A trip up and down the Brisbane River on the CityCat
