Oh, wow, that's a pretty incredible exploit.
Wait a minute.
To do this:
- Simply open Settings
- Go to General -> Date and Time
- Uncheck ‘Set Automatically’
- Change the date to 1st Jan 1970 (Scroll up to get to year 2000, then go back, into date settings again, repeat until it reaches 1970)
- Reboot
Hmm... These instructions sound awfully familiar.
An interesting bug relating to the date and time system in iOS has emerged recently. Several users have discovered that if you change your iOS device’s date to January 1st, 1970, your device will be permanently bricked
Oh boy. Dis gon be good.
-
?
The article is contradictory. Is the phone bricked, or do you just have to wait 5 hours? (Or however long it takes for your particular time zone).
Also what does the thread title have to do with the post?
... also why does that website play like a audio stream of skydiving(?) and people speaking Arabic(???) in the background? With no accompanying video?
What kind of fucking malware is this you linked us to?
-
Ruined by onebox disaster.
Basically, someone is trying to trick would be pirates into bricking their phones.
-
I'm pretty sure you can't brick/destroy fastboot from a running ROM on Android devices. Good going Apple, if changing USER settings on device can brick it's bootloader.
-
Humm... Changing system time is not a user setting, lots of system component that uses time (including authentication systems) can choke if you change the time to sometime in past. That's why when NTP client sees your system time is later than the correct time, instead of directly change the time to go backward, it just make the interal clock tick slower until the time matches.
-
That might be so, but it shouldn't affect the bootloader - the last piece of software that allows us to flash the device without opening it and flashing flash chip directly.
-
Fuck you. All is working well and let's turn this into a flamewar, as it rightfully should be already.
But seriously, this is hilarious. It's worth mentioning I wasn't going to test this.

No repro.
Oh right. You're a no-adblock peasant.
Whatever, enjoy your Arabic lesson.

To clarify: It'll not brick your phone permenantly. Someone on the reddit post report that once in your timezone the stored GMT time become positive again, you can change the time and make it work.
-
FWIW my iPhone first generation recovered from a porta-potty did not exhibit this problem. I know this because I had to replace the battery and because there is no such thing as a backup battery the clock starts at zero from a cold boot. Having customized the timezone as appropriate, the time was invalid for seven hours and it wasn't bricked or anything at all (well, obviously web encryption didn't work, but whatever).
Sent from my Android.

These instructions sound awfully familiar.
That will be because they only apply to devices new enough to have the microwave oven fast-charge feature.

It's not as if it's being warned against: http://osxdaily.com/2016/02/11/brick-iphone-destroy-date-bug/

We’re going to show you how this date trick works to destroy an iPhone so that you can avoid it yourself. Absolutely do not try this yourself, do not set the iPhone clock to January 1 1970 under any circumstances, it will break any iPhone. It will supposedly also brick any iPad or iPod touch as well, so do not try it on any iOS device.
Do not try this yourself, you will ruin the iPhone. That can’t be made more clear, if you try this, you will ruin the iPhone. In other words, do not try this yourself with any iPhone that you care about, unless you don’t mind sending it back to Apple for repair. Doing this will destroy the iPhone and make it inoperable. That means you won’t be able to use the iPhone at all, it will be broken. So we repeat, again, do not try this yourself. Do not try this at home. Do not try this with your iPhone. Do not try this with your friends or anyone elses iPhone. And most importantly, don’t be fooled into trying this by someone else, as there are several ridiculous pranks in the form of various claims circulating on the internet as to what happens if you set the iPhone date far into the past – don’t do it, it breaks the iPhone. This is often referred to as a bricked phone, because the iPhone becomes as useful as brick.
Do Not Try This, It Will Brick the iPhone
What not to do:Lots of reverse psychology going on in this article I'm not sure I can...
Fuck! I bricked my iPhone!

I suppose all we need now is for technology reporter Doug Boulton to ask "Why is it such an oddly specific date"?
-
Well, it's available from the Settings app, so I'd argue that it is in fact a user setting.
Either way,

software that allows us to flash the device without opening it and flashing flash chip directly.
Flash the motherflasher, flash the motherflasher,
Flash the motherflasher he's a flashing motherflasher.
Flash the motherflasher, flash the flashing flasher,
Flash the motherflasher hes a total flashing flasher.

So... personally introduce him to Eunuchs time?

For a Tech/science reporter at the about to be defunct Independent, he's remarkably stupid/uninformed.

Also, I don't think anyone here has RTFA:

PS: Used this blog for reference. And this bug bricks your iPhone. Please read this completely before trying :P

That ensures this trick will quickly become the "rm -rf /" variant for iPhone/iPad.

once in your timezone the stored GMT time become positive again, you can change the time and make it work.
So it works for people in Europe and China? Good to know…

Dude-- you can just buy those cheap on eBay. You really aren't saving enough to warrant-- that.

Now, however back in 2009 with no access to the internet, and repair of the device was practically free, and I had nothing else to do, so...
-
To clarify: It'll not brick your phone permenantly. Someone on the reddit post report that once in your timezone the stored GMT time become positive again, you can change the time and make it work.
Allegedly. There are a bunch of other people saying that waiting didn't work. In his Twitter post...
https://twitter.com/liamhanmore6/status/697837270238437376
in the comments, he's also wavering on whether he thinks the fix is simply waiting, or whether it's actually letting the battery die or reach the critical level and then recharging it.
-
That fails because he explicitly say to wait for 5 hours, while depending on your timezone, it might be 10+ hours.
Like what I said, you need your UEFI time (GMT) go back to positive time so the bootloader won't block you from boot. The reason for the lockup is because of a bug in bootloader to fail if the time is negative value.
-
I used to get "Learn Hebrew and read the Bible in Hebrew!"
-
That fails because he explicitly say to wait for 5 hours, while depending on your timezone, it might be 10+ hours.
Still, I'd think that people would wait longer than that before they took their shiny new iPhone to the Apple Store to get it replaced.
...well, a few people might...
-
I'd legitimately use that.
Bonus points for a Workbench 1.3 colour scheme ;)

hai i did everything like u said and my iphon doesntn work now plz send fix thx
