What's your dev setup like at home?

  • Trolleybus Mechanic

Anytime I code / tool around at home, it's just on my laptop. Built-in keyboard, 15" screen (single screen). Touchpad. It isn't quite IDEAL for coding-- I miss multiple monitors.

Do you do any coding at home? If so, what's your setup?

(And obviously some people will actually work from home / are self-employed-- still interested in what you use)

  • FoxDev

For quick work, I just do it on my Surface 3 and it's Type Cover, but for serious dev work, I have a twin-monitor setup for my desktop PC with a Logitech gaming keyboard and a pink mouse.

Though I guess my desktop is technically triple-headed, as I also have my TV hooked up to it via an HDMI switcher.

  • 4 1920x1080 monitors in a 2x2 setup, all driven by one GTX 760. G110 keyboard and G602 mouse. Not just for gaming - When you have a bunch of extra keys to assign hotkeys, it makes it very convenient for some of those visual studio Ctrl-Alt combos. Current client, on the other hand, teeny laptop + 1 1920x1080. So painful when client makes me use their hardware.

That poor graphics card; why do you torture it so? 😛

  • 80×25 ssh session with vim running in it in the bottom left corner of my 1080p screen.

For work, I use the same screen, but with Visual Studio maximized on it.

  • Pretty much the opposite of yours - two monitors (one 1080p, one 1280x1024 on the side), a good mechanical keyboard, a working headphone jack, and VS2015 Community + all the free stuff from my student licence on a desktop PC at home vs. pretty much just a 1366x768 Dell laptop and a place to sit at at work.

  • @RaceProUK said:

I say if it has 4 ports, it'd better damn well handle them. GPU-Z indicates idle temp at around 43 deg C. Someday maybe I'll look up if that's a bad thing.

Oh and I'm thinking about adding a 5th for my Lumia 950's Display Dock. Probably will put that downstairs though.

  • Fake News

Most of the time I'm just using my employer's ThinkPad (T440) because it has all the stuff installed (and most of all, no games).

Either I use its own 14" screen or hook it up to a 24" 16:10 monitor. In case of the latter I also hook up my obnoxious IBM PC keyboard to keep the neighbours awake.

My own desktop shares the 16:10 screen though it also has a 19" 5:4 monitor attached.

...umm, ok, maybe not. I have a Cherry keyboard and a Logitech G400 mouse (basically, the MX518 remake, best mouse there is).

You could probably build a half-decent PC for about, I dunno, $500-600? Nothing amazing, obviously, but easily enough for just about anything except hi-res 3D gaming, and almost certainly better than a laptop for the same price.

  • I survived the hour long Uno hand

Yeah, but the only place I have to set up a desktop already has a desktop in it. I only have room for a laptop on a tv tray in the living room where I spend most of my time.

Very odd, can't say the fan is that much of a problem. Then again, I have the XL battery pack which lifts the whole laptop 1cm from the desk surface - the increased airflow might help a lot.

in either case i'm usually SSH'd intot he RPi or developing on c9.io

  • Desktop with 16 GB RAM and a 4.4 GHz i5 1500k, with dual 22" 1080p screens and a good mechanical keyboard with Cherry MX Brown switches. I also have a dual-core Atom D525 running Lubuntu for occasional testing of Node.js projects on Linux, to make sure they're compatible on both Linux and Windows.

  • BINNED

A 4 year old PC with Fedora Workstation 22 + Cinnamon, with 2 monitors. I also have a Mac Mini just for when I have to compile for OSX, fuck Apple.

  • Cragganmore, 12 year old.

  • kills Dumbledore

Two monitors, Microsoft comfort mouse. I'm currently planning out a new pc build as my current hardware is getting slightly long in the tooth, and I've hacked my case up trying to fit in a graphics card that's far too big

  • I do coding at home with my Surface Pro 3. I bought that and MSDN subscription for development purpose that's not for my company. (I know community edition is free now, but the subscription renewal was bought 2 years before that was announced)

  • I use a self-built desktop PC with a 3.5 GHz i5-4690, 8 GB RAM, a GTX 970, a single 24" 1080p monitor, a generic Dell keyboard and a Razer Imperator mouse.

I usually use a single editor/IDE in fullscreen mode to write code. I use Visual Studio for .NET stuff, IntelliJ IDEA for Java stuff (Minecraft mods) and Notepad++ for Lua (WoW AddOns and miscellaneous scripts) and other scripting languages.

  • Custom built desktop. 2-3 generations old i5, 32 GB RAM, a bunch of HDD-s.

I have two standard 24'' monitors, but they are set up in a mirror mode. One is on a height adjustable desk, the other is next to a couch. So I can switch between sitting and lounging kind of "workstations".

I have a mechanical keyboard on the desk, otherwise use logitech wireless stuff for everything else. Strong recommendation for Marathon MX mouse.

Dual boot Windows / Hackintosh, but most of the work is done in a Debian VM.

I also have a separate home server where I host version control, backups and a few other tidbits. It's some kind of Lubuntu desktop, but I've been planning for some time to reformat that to a FreeBSD or Debian and add a few other services. I also have a static IP, because of the server.

Other solution would be paying for a VPS in the cloud somewhere, but I prefer having my own server for now.

  • I'm something of a hobo, do my dev on Notepad++ with XAMPP on a Late 2011 17" MacBook Pro running Windows 7. No extra monitor.

  • I use my job's laptop since I always carry it around. So, a Dell XPS 13.

  • Java Dev

Any coding I do at home is done on my gaming rig - 2x24" 1080p monitors, razor blackwidow keyboard, R.A.T. mouse.

On the rare cases I work from home I use the work laptop in a docking station, which is hooked up to the same two screens but has a logitech MX518 and a microsoft internet keyboard attached to it.

At home I have my i5 gaming rig with dual 1680x1050 monitors and a Core 2 Duo headless thing full of VMs. Feels a bit cramped compared to my work setup of dual 3840x2160 monitors though. Keyboard in both places is a Cherry G-224, it has amazingly comfortable action on the keys.

i5-3570k running at 4.3GHz with water cooling. I had the Core 2 Duo for so long I thought I should treat myself. The Radeon 7950 is getting a bit long in the tooth though and I will never buy another AMD graphics card again. When it works it's fine but the drivers are 💩

Edit: CPU-Z says the core speed is actually 4.3GHz, free speed 🚤

Nice. I just use an air-cooled 4670k at 4ghz. Doesn't go above 70C under sustained load. Finally got a GTX 760 after using a GTX 275 for a long while.

I think the water cooling is totally pointless for what I'm doing. It is nice and quiet though and looks quite badass mounted on the top of the case with fan guards (it was supposed to fit inside as this case is designed for it but it did not).

  • @NTW said:

i3 seems too wimpy and unprofessional. i7, like a needless expense. i5 is just the Goldilocks right.

  • 4th generation i7 with 32GB of RAM, hooked up to a 27" 2560x1440 IPS monitor. The cooling system is nearly silent - a Corsair radiator with decent fans. RAT5 mouse, mechanical keyboard - Cherry brown switches and white backlight.

Well if we're going into detail on custom-built rigs... My desktop got built 5 6 years ago on an AMD Phenom II 955 BE and has still been running fine. Added RAM until it got 8 GB, added some SSDs, replaced a failing hard drive, replaced the power supply as a precaution after it released a small amount of magic smoke.

Any thoughts on the current state of AMD? Back then it was clear that Intel Core processors could beat them but only prototypes of their new microarchitecture were available, causing me to buy AMD for about half or a third of Intel's prices.

    @NTW said:

I guess I don't game as much because I'm still doing fine. Then again I got some great over-ear headphones which drown out the extreme fan noise that Asus video card makes — no idea if the other vendors had better fans.

Looking at the charts they are still having their bottoms kicked for performance but the prices are a lot lower. Seems like a good bet for low/mid end systems.

    CPUBoss is great for comparisons.

Edit: Actually, performance/price is terrible on them, the price thing on CPU Boss is broken for me. These two are nearly the same price (high-end i5 vs the best AMD processor they seem to sell). Not a good deal at all: http://cpuboss.com/cpus/Intel-Core-i5-6600K-vs-AMD-FX-8370E
