100 T-Shirt Challenge. I have the finest Pot relate t-shirts on Earth right here. Any gutsy Swampies in the Bay area want to do a write in vote for poor poor old SpectateSwamp at the NetSquared mashup? I have the t-shirts (each accompanied by a mini ToKin stone). 12 or 13 different artistic creations. Mostly XL and XXL

Just to think... your nipples can rub up against the same fabric as Spectate's.

    Excellent.

BTW you are becoming even more famous. We have over 5,000 pageviews at http://www.thestupidestmanonearth.com and it is growing every day. I know you think that is a good thing, and that is fine, I don't really care. But you should know at least 1,000 people have visited the site, just to leave thinking to themselves "What a fucking retard."   Your parents would be proud.

Nearly 1000 takers on the exe as well. I have no counts on the source but your little site must be helping. Thanks. Now nobody can stop this search from reaching it's potential.

P.S. Everybody with a Tokin Stone shirt is always welcome at the big dances (near Swamp Shack). These dances are rare rare like the t-shirts and Dino Mummy Skin.

(Spectate, I hate to tell you this, but SSDS has already reached its full potential.  This is really as good as it gets.)

  • More play time with Swamp Search

    @CodeSimian said:

I bashed Spectate because of his general hatred for learning (especially book learning) and "thinking hard" (i.e. being a geek).  According to him, trying to get an education is a sucker's game.  To me, getting an education can include formal learning, it can include gaining knowledge through experience, and it can also be accomplished by reading books on your own.

One can spend their whole life learning and not doing. Kids are forced into school way too early. Too little play time for our young. Exchanged for school worries and pressures. For what. Honestly are any of your jobs so complex that you couldn't teach a grade 8 Student with a passion how to do it? I don't really hate learning, Just excessive learning. Computing has always been about learning and then it got more complex. Too many widgets to know. With Spaghetti Swamp code I can settle back and enjoy computing. No more learning for me. Maybe a little more play time.

  • spectate, if i give you my address, can you

a] send me a tokin stone tshirt [though i need a size 'small', 'medium' maximum], and

    b] curse me?

PS, MPS, tomorrow i will do some more writing for the site, i find myself with a few minutes a day to kill that i'd like to donate.

Hmm, you should really visit johntaylorgatto.com  (I know you won't).  You might half agree with him - he believes young kids can do a lot more, but the education system is (purposely) holding them back.  But he thinks kids should have more challenges, and learn more, not less.  He suggest home-schooling is a better alternative to the government school system.  (This is where I don't necessarily agree with him.)

Sorry about that. You all did good work on the site to get that kind of traffic so quickly. Just one class up here at Swamp Shack and I'll explain my top 3 programs. Simple and powerful. What a starting point for anybody that wants to get into computing, video and the rest... and not having to know too too much.

Years back my old friend Grant C. was in the elevator and another fellow made a simple computer related question. Well Grant started explaining about computing from day one. The Lawer butted in saying. I don't want to know that much.  IT can be a nasty treadmill of knowledge. Step off with Swamp Search.

Those 100 t-shirts are FREE to somebody that will put them to good use. There was one Pot protest in Edmonton where the first 10 in the support group all got one. I've got a lot more types now.

Yes. My job's sodding hard at times.

Although to be fair, I COULD teach a grade 8 student how to do it- but I'd start by teaching them some general language, maths and logic skills and then move on to some specific base knowledge and theory, and then maybe some rudimentary projects so they could practice different ways of working alone and in a team. You know, like the stuff they'd learn if they did some more years at school and then went to university.

Of course, Spectate could teach that kid "everything he needs to know" in a day or two at the SwampShack.  That's right:

  • Ok, MasterPlanSoftware, sorry it took so long to get around to it but here's something I wrote up in 10 minutes for a "Random Quirks" section. I'm sure it could use some editing, if anyone has ideas. Good enough to go on the site or not?

    He doesn't understand 3-dimensional space:

Doug Pederson repeatedly shows videos and images where his flying specks (see Aliens (LINK TO ALIEN TEACHINGS PAGE)) appear near a bird or airplane, and insists that they're hovering around the object, despite explanations that this is due to parallax (LINK TO WIKIPEDIA ARTICLE) and the specks are probably hundreds or thousands of feet away. Even worse, he also stated that the leaf in his "tobacco leaf flyer" video (again, see Aliens) had a retracting stem, even though in the video the leaf was simply turning so that the stem was no longer visible. Although it seems that Doug Pederson still has not quite figured out how to interpret what he sees or how the 3-dimensional world that he has lived in for over 40 years works, it's also possible that these are last-ditch efforts at rationalizing his "alien" videos.

    He doesn't understand wind:

Doug Pederson thinks it's strange that the specks in his "alien" videos appear to move quickly and rapidly change direction, even though it has been explained to him that this is exactly how objects (especially leaves) blowing in the wind behave. He also seems to think it is strange that the leaf in his "tobacco leaf flyer" video changes direction halfway through, again despite the fact that wind can, and frequently does, actually change direction. Apparently Doug Pederson has never been outside on a windy day, which is surprising considering how many outdoor videos he shoots.

His writing style would make an English teacher commit suicide:

Doug Pederson's writing style is insane as the man himself. He either uses too much punctuation, splitting his sentences apart into small, incoherent chunks, or too little punctuation, running a few different sentences together, or sometimes even both at the same time. He also personifies everything in sight, referring to "Old Man Copernic" when discussing Copernicus Desktop Search, and talking about "Old Man Neowin" banning him from the Neowin forums. Besides this, he has the annoying habit of inventing childish names for things, referring to a few large rocks he found "Biggie Flatten Em Stones" and calling anyone who uses a simple text search program (such as the classic Unix tool grep) a "Greppler".

He can't carry on a coherent discussion:

Whenever someone on a forum brings up a problem with any of Doug Pederson's teachings (the alien videos, SSDS, etc.) he either creates the most impossible and obviously unrealistic justifications for the way he does things, or he ignores the criticism completely and replies to random parts of a different post with either more "alien" pictures, more rhetoric on the greatness of SSDS, or a work story designed to show his supposed experience and intelligence, and that has nothing to do with anything else being discussed. Anything which proves his view of the world wrong apparently gets skipped over.

The Plant management system was massive. I could easily teach a novice that system twice as fast than it took me to learn it. A change or two here and there and Jam it. Don't think do.

The more complex the systems are the more screen captures you need. Not for yourself but for others in case you don't have luck getting to work one day. A number of the TelCo conversions were done because the lone programmer was old and quite sick. Another system hadn't had a software update in a decade. (we shipped the tape to a US colledge to get it converted) Do these screen captures because they're fun. Don't do it because it's work. Play them back randomly with SSDS. Keep lots and lots of screen captures. It's good to know that you can leave and not cause the collapse of the company. As a consultant I didn't want them to miss me in that way. I kept many notes and then got into screen captures. Good documentation of errors makes it so simple to solve the problem a 2nd time.

Getting along and working in groups comes natural to us, we are humans. Especially when we are having fun.

  • More quirks (note: all of the "quotes" below are paraphrased):

He has delusions of grandeur :

    • He wrote "the world's most powerful program"
    • He possesses "the world's most powerful medicine stones"
    • He will "dance away the end of world in 2012"

He frequently refers to himself in the 3rd person:

    • "Poor poor SpectateSwamp"
    • "Old SpectateSwamp knows..."

    Writes terrible puns:

    • "world's most powerful stones...world's most powerful program...what a coinci-dance?"
    • "My company changed its name to Shaw Cable, making me a ShawMan"

Frequently changes the subject for no discernible reason (often employing terrible puns):

    • (while discussing his Medicine Stones) "Treating me like that is like snubbing the Stones [obviously referring to his Medicine Stones]...Hey, did you know I have the same birthday as Keith Richards [suddenly talking about The Rolling Stones]
    • Me: "Why did you give that prospective SSDS user instructions on how to search your files?  That doesn't even make sense.  He wants to search his files."  SpectateSwamp: "Lots of people want to search your data: FBI, CSIS, etc."
    • Me: "You didn't respond to my $100 challenge." SpectateSwamp: "(Changes Thread Subject to: 100 T-Shirt Challenge)"
    • (SpectateSwamp enters thread discussing End of World novel) "Don't worry, I'll use my medicine stones to prevent the end of the world!"

  •  Another paraphrased non sequitur:

Me: "End users don't care if a system is complicated on the inside, as long as it's simple on the outside".

SpectateSwamp: "Back in the 1970s, my drunk buddy opened a hard drive while it was still spinning!  We had to dig up the manuals to figure out how to fix it.  Things sure were simple back then!"

Fuck! I completely forgot. There are GAMER KEYBOARDS which are special pads of keys like wasd,1234567890, enter, tab, and a bunch of other keys, in convenient locations so you can easily access the buttons for certain gaims (like the one for World of Warcraft), shoot there are all sort of crazy keyboards out there. Look at the gear for FPS games, they are even made to make less noise and press faster and easier because they need better responsiveness on the keyboard so they can sleep knowing they are the ub3r l337 g4m3rz!

I'm not talking about remapping the keyboard. I saying use jjj instead of Ctrl/Alt/Del use kkk to close down, that is way quicker than reaching. Multiple keys having meaning (jkl) (m,.) what every you want. Anyway that is why you all have access to the source code. Put in whatever really really fast keys you want. Any key where you have to move your hand from the home position is a waste of time.

    Sorry for late response...

BY GOD isntead of ctrl alt del use kkk? Damn you freaken racist! We aint sendin' the clan after people for wanting to reset your computer... WAIT A SECOND HOW OFTEN DO YOU RESET YOUR COMPUTER? Is it caz SSDS crashes often? AWWWWWWWWWW. I use Ctrl+Alt+Del maybe once or twice when windows explorer decides to use 100% cpu on multiple cores for no apparent reason caz I don't restart my work computer in weeks, months if I can get away with it.

In any case YOU CAN ALREADY DO THAT. Specialy for YOUR PROGRAM. what if you need to use VIM and navigate using hjkl? Huh does that mean that vim needs to change it's bindings? (yes it really really does!) What about games that use those keys in combination? What if something hits my keyboard and jams the j button and now my computer resets? How likely is it that something hits ctrl+alt+del when falling on keyboard vs one key?

If its for accessibility, the "web" keyboards with those extra navigation keys can usually be programmed.

by god what is it that you want? A mind reading computer? Go develop it and DONT let us know until you finish. And when its done go ahead and make a video of a video of a video of you videotaping it.

Alright, away on business tomorrow, I will get on it when I get back.

  • "SwampNotes" sounds like a great idea. Also, I was bored and I was tired of seeing all those empty teachings pages, so here's something for Aliens:

Among his other delusions, Doug Pederson is convinced that aliens are everywhere (at least where he lives), and he has taken many videos and photos that supposedly show alien activity. In his own mind, he is an expert alien hunter, enabled by SSDS [SSDS LINK]. If there were actual proof and facts to back up his claims, then this wouldn't be unreasonable. However, what this "evidence" shows is actually many specks in the air that are most likely either leaves blowing in the wind, birds at a distance, or video artifacts. On a side note, he believes that birds can see video artifacts, apparently not understanding that they aren't real-life objects. [Maybe that belongs in SwampNotes?]

Doug Pederson also once recorded a few videos of an anvil-shaped cloud (Towering Cumulus / Stacked Cumulus) which he calls a "mushroom cloud". He seems to think it holds some kind of alien mother ship, and is created by the aliens as visual cover. When asked what was special about the cloud, he responded that "There was one exactly like this one in the same location about 2 weeks later. I think they are there looking for Dino Mummys." Instead of convincing everyone that he is truly the cutting-edge alien hunter he believes he is, this only led to laughter, especially since he has mentioned "Dino Mummies" a few more times since then.

Another one of Doug Pederson's "alien" videos shows a leaf flying through the air and spinning. He believes it's some kind of alien vehicle, as he calls it the "tobacco leaf flyer". His given reasons are that it flies quickly, changing direction in the middle of the video (he doesn't accept the explanation that wind is behind this, as with all other flying leaves), and that the stem retracts in the video, even though all that happens is that the leaf turns, hiding the stem from view. In short, his alien claims are too ridiculous even for the other people who follow UFO sightings.

His coding and interface design styles (if they can be called that) should DEFINITELY be there, but in separate sections. The Masses can appreciate his wannabe-GUI, probably best demonstrated by screenshots, partial documentation (since that's the only kind that has existed or can ever exist) and links to his "demo" videos. Maybe a video showing some simple operations in Notepad, followed by doing the same thing in SSDS. To be fair, random slow-mo videos of TV's playing videos with large scrolling text should also be presented.

The wannabe-BASIC should be somewhere other than the DOS-Minus-One interface, and should probably be presented both as full source, preferably with syntax coloring (get Spectate's permission, or just link to it), and in a random-snippet display page. The snippet page could also include a (static, non-randomized) sample bit of simple logic in legible code to give less technically inclined viewers an idea of what good VB might look like.

    On an unrelated note...

Honestly are any of your jobs so complex that you couldn't teach a grade 8 Student with a passion how to do it?

Yes. Mine. I tried to explain it to some grade 8 students already - didn't work. At least it would have taken more time than I have at my disposal. In Germany, esp. in the region where I live, there is this two week period every year where grade 8/9 students leave school to work in companies in a field they are most interested in. This is supposed to get them an insight and help them specialize later (or at least find out whether things are the way they expected them to be). So I have some experience and can tell you that it takes far more than grade 8 education and "a passion".

Some correction to things I said before (took me some time, sorry):

Of course I didn't mean to say that people without a degree are dumber or less qualified for a job. There are always people without a degree that know a lot and even have more practical experience than people with a degree. BUT: These people did not get the knowledge from nowhere! They, too, did a lot of studying, reading, learning - just without the "professional" touch of attending university or whatever.

University doesn't teach you practical experience. Three things it taught me:

    • theoretical knowledge that might come in handy some time
    • the ability to learn faster
    • a thick skin (the ability to suffer a lot without complaining right away - Tip: Maths classes are the best for training that...)

The rest comes from 15 years of personal interest and a lot of try & error. Degree or no degree: You will have no chance of achieving anything without experience and practical knowledge. So, yes, there are skilled people with a degree. Also, there are unskilled lazy people with a degree. And there are as many skilled people without a degree.

All I wanted to say is: Swamp, stop bashing people that have a degree. They don't have it for no reason - they worked hard for it. Comparing unexperienced people with a degree to an experienced person without a degree is like comparing apples and oranges  (but we know that's the only way you do comparison - the way that makes you look good and projects your failure onto others...)

Sensible keystrokes though are a must, otherwise how are people supposed to know that jjj means reboot and kkk means exit? If you are enterig commands why not type exit to exit? A touch typist will have no problem with the speed of either but at least one of them makes sense...

Nearly 1000 takers on the exe as well. I have no counts on the source but your little site must be helping. Thanks. Now nobody can stop this search from reaching it's potential.

Most people are downloading the .exe and source for a laugh (pretty much living up to it's potential really) not to use it seriously.

With Spaghetti Swamp code I can settle back and enjoy computing. No more learning for me. Maybe a little more play time.

Have you ever thought that with a bit of learning (or willingness to learn) you could have turned SSDS into something more usable and have a maintainable code base. Your ignorance (and pride in said ignorance) has effectively hindered SSDS rather than helped it.

Your pride in having spaghetti code reveals you to be a moron (many other things do as well), a sane person would see the source for the mess it is and take steps to remedy the situation...

The Plant management system was massive. I could easily teach a novice that system twice as fast than it took me to learn it. A change or two here and there and Jam it. Don't think do.
I love the idea of 'don't think. do.' what happens if a problem occurred that could have been spotted with a moments thought? I would love explaining that to my boss - reason for plant shutting down for repairs was 'I jammed it!'

Systems can be complex internally but easy to use - even you can use a camcorder to record mpg files; mpg is a very complex system though and certainly not something a grade 8 or 9 education could have invented.

Do these screen captures because they're fun.

Screen captures are neither fun or relevant to my job. If I want fun I have enough hobbies and interests to amuse myself with. If I were to leave my current employer they would not collapse - everything I do is correctly documented in an appropriate form (text, ppt, source code, rtf etc.) and someone of suitable skill and intelligence could take over my role with minimal effort; a grade 8 or 9 education most certainly couldn't perform my role though.

A friend of mine works in a nuclear power plant. I don't think he'd agree with your approach.

These guys know Clouds and Aliens. Shoot lots of video of clouds and find aliens.

    I'm puzzled now.

They find their aliens by inverting the colors, changing contrast and so on - without using SSDS! How is that possible?

You may have found a new home though, those guys sure don't mind quacks.

I'm sure there are quite a few jobs that can't be taught to an apprentice. I just didn't come across any in my career. And for passion. It should be easy to get their passion going. Try introducing a camcorder in the next training session. Make it fun. Swamp Search does video very very well.

And the point to this would be what exactly? Just because you seem to have a fetish for camcorders does not make them the solution to all problems....

No it doesn't. It can simple send a couple of instructions to Windows Media player which does video. There is nothing SSDS can do that media player can't.

(Whitecourt is currently in an open debate about building a Nuclear Plant)

I hope your friend doesn't get a job around Whitecourt. Videoing One mushroom cloud. Then have an exact duplicate at the same spot 2 weeks later. And viewed by someone that isn't Crazy. That is a sign and a pretty big one.  --- or two.

Don't be doing any video of beautiful clouds. If you play that footage back slowly. You might see something. Then what.

  • @SpectateSwamp said:

Then we'll all go to the roof of the tallest building downtown and hold signs that declare We welcome our new alien overlords!

I think SS posts after his daily hammer-in-the-head session. Dude go read any book and you will be able to form a government conspiracy theory from it if you try hard enough and spend enough time.

In anycase it won't be alien overlords, I thought we all agreed on our autonomous lawnmower overloards.
