easier to hide from the eyes of the people you are trying to trick into using your subversive symbolism at the very least.

also i see it's time to stop watching YouTube until November again.

I'd also stop watching TV, but i dropped cable ages ago and havent bothered getting an antenna for OTA TV.

Rethorical question: When are we going to stop getting hate based attack ads? I want to know what the candidates are for not what they are against!

and for heavens sake, when you tell me at party X's plan for Y is bad, TELL ME WHY YOURS IS BETTER IF YOU WANT ME TO PAY ATTENTION TO YOU IN ANYTHING LIKE A POSITIVE LIGHT!

  • Ok, so the best I could come up with a way to express my thoughts on that one.

A neo-nazi group, wanting to be taken seriously, picks the logo of a comic book villain group that are representative of nazis.

How seriously would you take a political presidential candidate that selects S.H.E.I.L.D.'s logo?

  • @accalia said:

If the people are perfectly hunky-dorey with the NAZI EAGLE, why the FUCK would you have to be subversive?

    @xaade said:

More seriously than one who selected the NAZI EAGLE! Which I remind you is the image we're talking about here.

  • @blakeyrat said:

    Ok, that's kinda my point.

Ok, for whatever reason, I find it funny that a racist group chose to blend Nazi symbol with comic book villain symbol. To me, I can't take it seriously because I can't stop laughing at it.

I mean, if someone tried to rob a bank using a Cobra disguise and spoke with his hammy voice, I'd probably die from getting shot because I couldn't stop laughing.

Everyone says that, but negative ads sure seem to work better. But I can accept that you don't like this sort of thing. I just never would have associated that with "hate." (Like, the content of the ad, not one's feelings toward it.)

  • @boomzilla said:

Why would he need to be racist?

insert pun about Trump calling himself ___-machine

I mean, he's pretty much a big freakin mirror right now, and that's why he has so much support.

He's pretty much a conservative Obama as far as campaign rhetoric goes. None of what he's saying has any evidence for his personal support in his small bit of political history. Unless the conservative-god-of-politics came down and converted him, I doubt he's actually going to do anything he's saying he will.

Yeah, he managed to find this one issue that happens to resonate with a lot of conservatives, but it is fun to watch him schlong everyone. He's very gifted that way.

Well, we really haven't changed since JFK...

Voting patterns are highly predictable on a combination of enthusiasm and height.

The current favored leader of each party is the loud obnoxious one.

Of course, occupyX seems to like Bernie, but he won't win.

All you have to do is the math on how far into the future he'll have to borrow to pay for one year...

  • The Internet is a big place. You can find supporters for any ideology you want.

That's why "look at what people online are saying! points to stupid people" is a non-argument. Find me a poll showing those people are >x% of the population and then we'll have something.

It's an argument I've heard from feminists and MRAs: "when a man does X, people say it's [great/terrible], but when a woman does the same they say the opposite. So sexist!". Really, do "people" say that? What percentage? How do you know that? Or did you extrapolate from that one person you met 3 years ago?

Though I mostly tune out the ads on youtube, either doing something else while they run or just watching the countdown to skip.

    The lizards, obviously.

    [cue flashback music]

β€œIt comes from a very ancient democracy, you see..."
"You mean, it comes from a world of lizards?"
"No," said Ford, who by this time was a little more rational and coherent than he had been, having finally had the coffee forced down him, "nothing so simple. Nothing anything like so straightforward. On its world, the people are people. The leaders are lizards. The people hate the lizards and the lizards rule the people."
"Odd," said Arthur, "I thought you said it was a democracy."
"I did," said Ford. "It is."
"So," said Arthur, hoping he wasn't sounding ridiculously obtuse, "why don't people get rid of the lizards?"
"It honestly doesn't occur to them," said Ford. "They've all got the vote, so they all pretty much assume that the government they've voted in more or less approximates to the government they want."
"You mean they actually vote for the lizards?"
"Oh yes," said Ford with a shrug, "of course."
"But," said Arthur, going for the big one again, "why?"
"Because if they didn't vote for a lizard," said Ford, "the wrong lizard might get in. Got any gin?"
    "What?"
"I said," said Ford, with an increasing air of urgency creeping into his voice, "have you got any gin?"
"I'll look. Tell me about the lizards."
    Ford shrugged again.
"Some people say that the lizards are the best thing that ever happenned to them," he said. "They're completely wrong of course, completely and utterly wrong, but someone's got to say it."
    "But that's terrible," said Arthur.
"Listen, bud," said Ford, "if I had one Altairian dollar for every time I heard one bit of the Universe look at another bit of the Universe and say 'That's terrible' I wouldn't be sitting here like a lemon looking for a gin.”

Slightly longer answer: It doesn't matter what they say they are for, they aren't going to do it anyway.

  • I played the crap out of that game when it first came out. I may still have the black cardboard sunglasses that it came with... somewhere.

Give the cheese sandwich to the little dog. Don't ask why, and try not to think too hard about what you're doing, but just feed the dog.

  • @DCRoss said:

and try not to think too hard about what you're doing

Is that like a quote from the book?

    It's got to be.

  • Not a quote but a definite reference.

  • At best it was inspired by the "How to fly" section, particularly the advice on what not to do.

"Do not listen to what anybody says to you at this point because they are unlikely to say anything helpful.

They are most likely to say something along the lines of "Good God, man, you can't possibly be flying!" It is vitally important not to believe them or they will suddenly be right. "

But really it all comes from the realization that I had to start the entire game over because I didn't do one illogical thing which was referred to by a sentence in the book, but which didn't make any sense at all until halfway through the game.

  • No... What happens to the fleets sent by the Gugunvtts and the Vl'hurgs after the whole "I seem to be having tremendous difficulty with my lifestyle" incident?
In the book, they get eaten by a dog. Or in this case, not eaten by a dog who is currently investigating a sandwich.
At least, IIRC.

Right, that's what happens in the book and game. The quoted part, which xaade was asking about, isn't really related to that.
