Gene Should Not Be A Moderator

  • Has anyone else been monitoring the posts that Gene has been deleting? The guy is deleting posts simply because he didn't agree with the opinions expressed - not because they hurt the value of the forum. He really should not be a moderator.

    sincerely,
    Richard Nixon

  • no, I haven't been "monitoring" them.    and I must disagree, all the posts that have been deleted are posts that I personally didn't get anything from or enjoy reading.  Thanks Gene, AmmoQ, and Jeff for taking the time to delete all the "FIST!" and troll posts.

  • I absolutely agree, and I can't say I'm surprised.

If you haven't been monitoring them, how can you possibly know that the posts being deleted are out of line?

Gene continues to behave like a coward.

    sincerely,
    Richard Nixon

    I just took a quick look: http://thedailywtf.com/moderationhistory.aspx

Please be specific, i'm looking at the top two and see no problem. The first post (<FONT face=Arial>Deleted 6/8/2006 7:46:45 PM) is an off-top flame </FONT>as is the second one (<FONT face=Arial>Deleted 6/8/2006 1:07:12 PM). </FONT>

  • Except your "Oh, the Workarounds" post (which is on-topic by my standards), I see no reason not delete the other posts mentioned.

  • monitoring = To test or sample, especially on a regular or ongoing basis; To keep track of systematically with a view to collecting information.
just because I'm not "monitoring" doesn't mean I didn't go back and read them before I posted.  think a little bit before you post next time.

  • I think it's a sad day when one cannot state that the brillant forum software is the real WTF.

The big reason not to delete the posts is because the "rules" (not that they really exist) are not consistently applied.

Another reason Gene shouldn't be a moderator is his point blank refusal to discuss his behaviour.

Everybody knows that and it's about as valuable as the information that some post is the first post in the thread.

It's not the primary purpose of the forum is to gather posts for deletion. Every post that contributes to a thread should of course be kept. Worthless posts, on the other hand... well, sometimes a moderator cares enough to delete them, sometimes not. I don't think we need strictly enforced rules which posts may live and which don't, common sense should be enough.

Another reason Gene shouldn't be a moderator is his point blank refusal to discuss his behaviour.

I don't agree. Anyway, it's up to Alex to decide that.

Looks like an off-topic flame to me? Where's Gene the Pompous when we need him now?

    sincerely,
    Richard Nixon

Honestly, my whole problem is that Gene deletes posts that are rude or borderline flame yet the vast majority of his posts are much more rude and insulting. He carries an arrogant and hostile tone. Now, I don't really mind that too much but I think it is in poor taste to allow Gene to delete posts that are very similar to his own posts.

He is full of himself (without reason, everything technical I've ever observed him saying is either patently obvious or wrong) and I just wish he would leave this site and never come back.

    sincerely,
    Richard Nixon

Come on Richard, it's pretty clear that your response ...

Completely off-topic and inappropriate. Considering this post and your moderation history, it's quite clear that not only are you a poor moderator, you also contribute nothing of value to the forum. It's pathetic how you go around stroking your own ego all the time.

... is an off-topic flame. What does moderation have anything to do with it?

In fact, I found Gene's response (the one to which you replied to) of "What would your mother say?" to be clever. Did you catch what it was a response to?

Oh, and the captch test wants me to prove I am not a Robot. Perhaps it should say "Prove you are not a derived object"

Did you not understand it? Allow me to explain: one proving that he is not a "derived object" as in, a human child derived from his mother's DNA, might be rather impossible.

You've made your point that you disagree with how I run the site. I get it and I respect your opinion. So, let's leave it at that. You have the power to "watch the watchers" (http://thedailywtf.com/moderationhistory.aspx) and you know my email (<myfirstname>@<mylastname>.com), so going forward, please address any concerns regarding this directly with me. Please don't continue to post about this. Otherwise, myself or another moderator will likely edit/delete the post.

Why? Well, frankly, it's embarssing. I run another site that has a high population of kids and teens. A few are moderators on that site and they manage to get along without this much complaining. We're all not only adults but *professional* adults -- so let's act it.

  • just out of curiosity, what is the other site?

Got it Alex. And it is only because I enjoy this site so much that I am complaining. But I will stop pissing in the pool now.

    sincerely,
    Richard Nixon
