My Daily WTF of today

  • So I came to work today and I was told to halt all development.
The project is overdue and being handed over to a different manager.

So I was reading up on some technical documents for about 3 hours.

Then I wanted to review the design of the software at my employer company.

Since I was told not to make any changes to the code, I was going to ask the manager if I can leave early so that I can go to my direct employer.

He says, "Resume now and finish this feature by today". I have an hour and half hour to 6 P.M.

You told me to stop so I stopped. Now that I've got an hour and a half until I can go home, you tell me to resume and finish this feature?

Great project management skills, you've got.

  • Dupa

Man, working in this type of place, I think you need your own rant thread. Bet it's going to be great! 😃

Get ready for some downtime. You'll see the wonders of consulting jobs while stagnant for the next week until they figure out their "management" shit.

    Make it two weeks.

    Make it two weeks.

They already have a deadline. Guess when it is. It's next Friday.
They are now doing the hand-off on Friday 15th January and they already have a plan and it is to finish this project by 22nd January.

So supposedly, there shouldn't be a minute of downtime.

  • I'be fed up with all software development companies in this country. I'm looking abroad now.

A personal rant thread? That doesn't sound too bad.

  • So there's going to be at least two weeks of downtime while people trying to find their rectums with flashlights.

Also having a personal rant thread is awesome. The best ones are in the Lounge (trust level 3 only)

You mean the ones from people that should have walked away but stayed to report on tdwtf about their work environment?

Great project management skills, you've got.

    Today:
"I'll do what I can before the end of the day. Can you make sure my schedule is clear tomorrow without interruption so I can work more?"

    Tomorrow:
"Dear PM, I have some concerns about the timeline of this project. Here is how much of it I believe can be completed by Milestone X. I wanted to raise this flag with you early, so you can manage it."

In both those cases, you aren't saying "Fuck you asshole what the fuck?". You aren't saying "I, personally, by my own failure, will not be able to complete this reasonable task". You aren't even really blaming him for being a short-sighted dicknose.

Instead, you're just highlighting a fact-based problem (time available vs. time required), and alerting the person best suited and responsible for handling this (the pm). If anyone, such as Boss+1 asks, you can defer back to your PM. If the PM gets pissy, you just calmly restate the position "I have concerns about the amount of time available".

    So either:

    • PM accepts that, and gets more time or pushes back the deadline
    • PM ignores your advice and forces the deadline. When the project fails, you have (IN WRITING I FORGOT TO MENTION ALSO DO THIS IN WRITING) that you raised this concern early and to the right people. It's back on the PM.

The goal is to be diplomatic, non-antogistic, and yet still completely cover your ass and shift the responsibility back to him.

Oh, and if his solution is "You'll just have to pull all-nighters to get this done", everyone's advice about leaving at 6pm still apply. "I'm scheduled to leave at 6pm. I don't think your work plan fits that schedule". Again, not antagonistic, but just stating a reality. It'd be like if his project plan required you to fly. "I don't think that can be accomplished, we need to rethink this solution".

There's a dev position open here, if you want to apply and move to 🍁

This may have something to do with my level of unhingeing. I am terminally single and my friends are thoroughly tired of hearing about this place (with the exception of the one who is here suffering with me).

    Just go, don't ask.

  • So recently I've been reading up on DDD. And I realised all the projects, including this one, have a value object for each table in the database. They are all named something like, UserVO, RecordVO, PostVO, NaturalDisasterVO.

However, those VOs actually have an id field, are fetched from the database but are not used as simple value objects.

I think these should be domain models.

But please enlighten me on this subject if I need correction. I'm still learning.

How bad is it if a programmer names domain objects as value objects?

  • @Lorne_Kates said:

Where is the fun in that ?

Here? You mean Korea? Uh, I was born here?

  • I meant how long did it take for you to get to a point where you're fed up with all the companies ?

  • This is my 4th year of being a programmer so a little more than 3 years.

When I was at my first job, I thought it was only that company that sucked and thought other places were better.

So this is my second chance to have a look at how other companies develop and it is shitty.

And then I went to my actual employer and asked the head engineer to show me their code.

Well, again, I was a bit disappointed.

He told me stories of horrible maintenance/development nightmares.
He thinks it's okay not to enforce 1nf, uses VOs as domain objects, etc.

So, no. I'm done with Korean companies. Though if it will take too long to move out, I might find some less shitty companies here.

  • You best start your own Rant thread !

  • Monday, 18th January.

So my payday was some two weeks ago. I only got paid less than half of my wage.
My employer said, the client company(where I actually go to work), has not paid yet and delaying the payment and the company (which I have the actual contract with) doesn't have enough money to pay its employees.

So I have been doing overtime until 2 A.M., packing some 78 working hours into one week and I worked on the weekend. I worked 24 hours on Saturday and some 6 hours on Sunday.

I won't go to work tomorrow unless they pay me. My balance has dried up and I simply don't have the bus fare, let alone my lunch money.

  • I think I can just use this one as my rant thread. 😄

  • @Ascendant said:

Haha you must be high as fuck from all the sleep deprivation. Seriously though, looks like you're being screwed over more than I initially assumed.

  • Wow.

Ok, I don't know what it's like in Korea, but if you were in the US:

    1. Stop work RIGHT AWAY until that paycheck is complete

    2. Call up your local payroll agency RIGHT AWAY and tell them you're working for a company that can't make payroll. (It doesn't matter WHICH of the two companies can't make payroll; the point is: your pay day came, and you didn't get paid.)

That's huge, huge, huge, here in the US.

  • Yes, I know how big it is in the States.

However, I will go so far as to say that I would try to be more understanding that sometimes.
Businesses can hit a hard time but if I can get what I'm missing not too late, then I would give my employer some time.

    @blakeyrat said:

    you didn't get paid

I did get paid, just not the full amount.
I got paid 41% of my wage on the contract.

But yes, this is total bollocks.

  • @Ascendant said:

I did get paid, just not the full amount.I got paid 41% of my wage on the contract.

Right; but you did like 150% times the work required by the contract, so you're getting royally fucked.

You have to have SOME Government agency that handles shit like this. At least call them.

  • @blakeyrat said:

Right; but you did like 150% times the work required by the contract, so you're getting royally fucked.

You are right. After this deal reaches its termination. I will find a different job.

    @blakeyrat said:

You have to have SOME Government agency that handles shit like this. At least call them.

In Korea, calling the authority will inevitably lead to the termination of your employment.
The law says you have to pay 150% of the normal hourly pay for evey hour during ovetime.
There is the law but nobody does it.

It's not like there isn't a law that says corruption is punished by this or that, that politicians and Korean conglomerates bribe and steal on a daily bases.

This doesn't mean I approve of this culture of doing business. In fact, I think this is total bullshit.

But I would very much like to call the authority though. I just don't know what's gonna happen after that.

This is why I'm fed up with work culture of this place.

Btw, I won't go to work tomorrow unless they pay me. My balance has dried up and I simply don't have the bus fare, let alone my lunch money.

  • @Ascendant said:

You are right. After this deal reaches its termination.

What deal? They're already breaking the deal: they're paying you 40% of what you agreed upon!

    @Ascendant said:

In Korea, calling the authority will inevitably lead to the termination of your employment.

At this point, what do you have to lose?

I dunno, do what you have to I guess.

  • Yes, this new job presents me a host of issues I've never experience before.

I've never got half payed before and now I don't have bus fare or lunch money for tomorrow.

  • @blakeyrat said:

I dunno, do what you have to I guess.

I appreciate your concern though. I hope I didn't sound like I was dismissing your points.

  • No problem. And it's good that you're not going on, and if they ask say exactly what you said here: you didn't pay me enough to get bus fare.

  • It depends on where you work.

In Hong Kong, the employers have 7 days leeway to settle the wage payment. And in his case since he did get some of the payment, it's unclear on how to count it.

If stop working before the 7-day limit, you could be accused "resign without notice period" and in that case you owe the employer the payment in-lieu of notice period. Since the company does not have enough money, they should be more than happy to have extra cash.

  • @Ascendant said:

I've never got half payed before and now I don't have bus fare or lunch money for tomorrow.

Hmmmm. Do you have Fuckyou money saved up in case if you want to ragequit ?

  • @stillwater said:

    Fuckyou money

    @stillwater said:

    ragequit

    Interesting vocabulary.

Here is a little bit of insight into the lives of men in South Korea.

Evey man in South Korea must go through 2 years conscription or face imprisonment with a criminal record that will follow you for the rest of your life.

Even if you have a mental illness, the military doctor who examines you will still stamp your file as "good for conscription"

Because of this, I had to quit my first job as developer and I had no way of making money.
    So, no unfortunately.

That's why I'm being patient with this job.
Patient, that is, until I find a better one.

Sounds like you're going to lose your job anyway (unless they're lying), depending on the laws regarding insolvency/bankruptcy in Korea.
