How well do you know the Sockdevs?

a semiprecious stone
A who now? None of the Sockdrawer contributors look particularly stoned — well, okay, @TwelveBaud does, but that's just because he's a clown.

Not yet. Still waiting for my certification.
-
the asshat society appears to be faster with it's certification program
-

I don't have an asshat. I used to, but I accidentally sat on it.
-
so now it is a flat hat?

Honestly, I think that bit is 'darkness' and the 'kuro' is 'black', but I don't know what the 'nue' is. Probably something equally edgy.

/me is enough of a closet weeabo to know that much....
-
I would have been more surprised if you said otherwise, at this point.
-
..... i'm not really that well hidden in the closet on that score, am i?
-
-
Did you get Zend Certified Engineer too?
-
To avoid disrailing a serious help thread any more, I'll stop here, but people are weird about what they hide or don't. I like anime like a normal guy likes cars, not like the insane ones like cars or anime. I almost wish I was that excitable.

So long as he doesn't take my spotOn a related note, I've flagged for this chain to be Jeff'd elsewhere; we should really have stayed on topic :)

the 'kuro' is 'black', but I don't know what the 'nue' is
"Kuronue" was meant to be "Raven", but I got the translation from a dodgy source.

Yep, that's definitely about as edgy as it gets. "Black Raven of Darkness"
-
Yeah, I've had this nick since I was 15, and it shows XD
-
I think I've had mine for longer, though not always with the
UK
on the end; that got added when I switched e-mail from Another.com to Hotmail. If I had to guess... I've had it since I was about 13/14.Dayum... that's over half my entire life!
-
well if we're discussing this sort of stuff....
hmm.... my original handle i got when i was about 14.... but a variety of things happened towards the end of HS and i ended up having to drop it, so.... 18 or 19 was I when i started using Accalia as my name online.... not quite half my life, but long enough that i'll answer to both Accalia and Alice pretty much anywhere without thinking about it.
-
I switched to Kuronue/Yamikuronue when I was thoroughly embarrassed by the handle I picked when I was 12: Techwiz00. Before that was the AOL handle I had when I was 10: petgirl10.

You don't want to. Really. Better for remains of your sanity.
-
"Kuronue" was meant to be "Raven", but I got the translation from a dodgy source.
Well, if you take off the 'e' your nick becomes (according to google translate) "dark black coating", which one might generously translate to "the black paint of darkness".
-
This was probably the source the dodgy source got it from, btw:
-
So Yamikuronue means Dark Bat Demon?
-
/shrug
-
I didn't know you were a procedurally generated Dwarf Fortress boss.
-
...I am?
-
Techwiz00
My friend had something similar, until we convinced him to try UberMegaLord, since that way it's purposely funny.
Apart from a short stint as Chief_Officer after playing Digimon World 3, Magus has been my username for the majority of my time on computers. Though before that, due to some game I can't remember anything except the login screen for up through runescape, I used a name that was the longest the former would allow, AZZAJAHOGAFUNAZA. Worst. Name. Ever.
-
AZZAJAHOGAFUNAZA
Is that a name or the noise you make when falling down a flight of stairs?
-
Yes.
-
At least it wasn't JOZXYQK!
-
"Casimer the Adequately Skilled" comes from two places:
- There was a World of Warcraft commercial where a demon says something along the lines of "you are not prepared", but "prepared" sounded worse than "skilled" when I put it in the name.
- Casimer was on a list of names that someone named Vlad found for a procedurally generated game we were in the early stages of developing.
Before that, "Nightgunner5" came from:
- Vlad's RuneScape username was "Nightgunner".
- 0-4 were already taken.
As for Guild Wars 2:
- I'm not sure where "Blergo" came from. Probably just a random noise. I got lucky and it sounded vaguely asuran.
- "Gaby Wildfrau"'s first name is the same as the only female regular on the Sausagefest mumble server. Her last name was from a Guild Wars 2 name generator.
- "Slaug Ironbrand" was a name from a Guild Wars 2 name generator with a "u" added because Slag was taken.
- "Eowyn Summer"'s first name was from a Guild Wars 2 name generator. Her last name was from Jastian Summer.
- "Jastian Summer" is the name of a story-based Alien Swarm mod that I tried to make but ran out of ideas. Jastian was the randomly generated name of the star I started on in Spore.
- "Ben Lubar" was a human, so I chose the name of the closest human to me at the time. Which was me.
- "Palcci" means evil.
- "Shiinfo Ironbrand"'s first name means lion/lioness and her last name is the same as Slaug's.

No, it's just assed up.

Somehow I missed this one before :) I should go with "Painted black as the darkness" as the translation XD

Nice to see that this history is fairly more common than i thought.
My first nickname was "Mito", that's portuguese for "Myth", worked quite nicely at the start and to this date there's people that remember me by that nickname, but it's not exactly pratical
After a while, me and a pair of friends kinda of developed some lore and language for an ancient group of warriors, Konohosame and Tekarusame. i used those names for a while, as they were always available everywhere, until I came up with the lore for Sentenryu, as a Knight with indestructible armor and lightning powers. I loved the character so much that I use his name and update his lore to this date.
Now there's people that only recognize me by Sentenryu, even though we have known each other personally for years. Only downside of this name is that i can't pronounce it right, and as such, nobody can.
I love reading the history of peoples usernames
-
When I signed up to the LEGO website as a young child it suggested the username "6991", so I used that for a while.
Towards the end of primary (a.k.a elementary) school I started using "Choonster", which is loosely based on my surname. I've used this or some variant of it on pretty much every site since then (including WoW, which is where my avatar comes from). Surprisingly there are a few other people who call themselves this, so occasionally I have to use a slightly different name.
