Was autocomplete matching long names as well as usernames something that was ever fixed (or even acknowledged to be a bug)?

Probably. Then regressed. The fact it currently favours long names rather than usernames when the latter is more likely the one being used is..
(For reference, without the period at the end of the name, it favoured the correct choice. Adding a full stop.... )

I think @Kuro has "@boomzilla" in his long name. We've seen that problem before with @accalia and @RaceProUK
-
FunFact: I also have @PJH in my long name. The only reason you don't see me when typing his nickname is because of the 10000 sockpuppets he owns!
I seem to remember actually popping up first on some version of Discourse. Because that made Discosense.
Filed Under: But yeah, it's my long name that is trolling
Also Filed Under: My sockpuppet @codinghorror is not there, btw. since it was stolen by PJH

But surely it should prioritise matches on short name frist?

I think this is just on your part. I recall Himself asserting that people would be at least equally likely to use long names. I guess in places where people use those for, like, names, that might even be true.

if you don't think like Captain then that is just the sort of thought you would have.

But I don't think like Captain Pants-on-Head, so that's the sort of thought I do have!

I know of a lady that had a thumbprint on her passport as 'she couldn't write'.

Obviously, having more than one person on this planet with the name Peter Miller is in the first place. As is using part of one's Real Name as one#s username.
We should have either stayed on our trees, or switched to use UUIDs as Real Names a century ago.

By all means, make a note of posting it here too!

Why is anyone anusuming that ShitDorks will do anything correct regarding anything to do with names? FFS, they don't even support spaces in usernames. You know which forum WAS ABLE TO support usernames with spaces?

**Fig 1.** User types long name **Fig 2.** User pushes enter. Or space. Or basically any key on the keyboard. The name they typed disappears (with no option to undo) and a different name appears. The user is taught to always type the short name. **Fig 3.** User types short name.
