Bad Work Environment

  • Some moron has decided to add a big collection of Hits Of The 90's to our mp3 server at the office.

    Can't Touch This is playing.

    Jeeves, fetch me my axe.

Now all we need is your address and the RIAA can send their trained attack dogs lawyers to attack sue you.

    Shouldn't that be a Hammer

Don't you guys got mp3 players with headphones? You know so your friend can listen to all the MC Hammer he wants and you can comfort yourself with Angel without annoying each other?

  • dhromed would find my excess of Japanese music equally annoying. Especially stuff like this.

    Thats absolutely awesome.

  • Needs more cowbell.

You know what's missing in your life?

    Some death.

    You know.

    Yours.

  • Try mainstream radio, listen to "Umbrella" by Rihanna 3 times an hour 6 months a year, you probably go nuts.

Alternatively, you could exact revenge by adding something even worse to the MP3 server. Possibly some of that Japanese music that Welbog posted up. If people complain, but still want to keep listening to "Can't Touch This", it's time to invest in some headphones

I agree. dhromed, if you want, I can hook you up with some terribly annoying music you can use to exact revenge on your coworkers.

At a previous job I had a coworker who would listen to country music all day long. As a response, I found an internet radio station playing polka. Sure, I won the war, but at what cost?

  • Hey, at least you have some level of control over your music... Place I worked at a while back had speakers in the ceiling - mainly for interrupting everyone's flow by announcing that Amanda Hugankiss had a phone call on line 3. During the "holiday" season one year, the CEO arranged for the system to play holiday music 24/7... It took us about 5 minutes to disable the speaker in our work area.

When asked about it, the CEO's defense was that he wanted to promote a cheerful, festive atmosphere. This was the same CEO who bought a large TV and satellite service "for the employees to use" and then installed it by the receptionist's desk and mandated that it had to stay on CNN.

  • Reminds me of when I worked during college as a bartender in a large corporate restaurant. The music itself wasn't that bad, but it was pretty much the same 40 or 50 songs on an endless loop. Or, if you had to do something back in the kitchen, you got to listen to the stereo blasting some goofy Latino pop/traditional/polka music.

I also worked for a time at a smaller family-owned restaurant. The owner was also a lawyer; I guess he knew he wasn't supposed to play copyrighted music, but he had some collection of CDs just for that purpose. It was the same kind of thing, hits of the 80s compilations, but it was a bunch of no-name performers covering songs like Billie Jean and Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go. This time more like the same 20-30 horrid performances on an endless loop.

  • I used to work at a fast food joint, the manager could have probably retired a few years ago, I was the oldest staff member (aside from my 6 month younger cousin) at 20, runner up at 15. The manager's choice of music (radio was mandatory by decree of TDL [owning company]) was EZ-Rock; which wouldn't be bad if they:

    A) Played songs by people whose voices didn't cause temporary mental instability in all employees

    B) Had access to a playlist longer than 5 songs, by the time I quit they added two songs.

    C) Played songs that had themes other than "my life sucks", "please love me, I suck", "You are beautiful, so I'll sing a ten minute song comprised of the first three words in this sentence" and "Please love me, I'm not very good a getting laid"

It already contains Autechre - Untilted and some Christian Vogel. I plan on adding Quaristice or Draft 7.30.

I set usernames in bold when I am not directly replying to them (in this case I was replying to someone else, but mentioning you) so that they can more easily tell that I am talking about them. It's just something I've picked up from various forums over the years. I'm going to continue doing it no matter how much you complain about it.

  • Just askin'.

  • Autechre is not that bad...

    No, they're not.

    They're very very good.

  • At my first job, one of the guys I worked with was a big techno fan. We streamed music to the stereo.

Try coding while hearing the same loop playing over and over and over again. There were some days were getting kicked in the balls would have been less torture.

Ya, I agree that you are better off with everyone in headphones

  • Discourse touched me in a no-no place

I find it easier to concentrate if I have the same music playing all the time (though headphones.)

Provided it's my music, and it's not being drowned out by other office noises, like people talking loudly or mobiles ringing all the time.

    I do the same thing.

I ment that there are techno songs that loop over and over again. You could have a song that lasts 45 minutes that is the same crap.

  • Yeah, I've coded for several hours listening to, oh, say, the Dr. Robotnik music from Sonic 3 ;) Good way to keep my mind focused!

    That's pretty crappy techno, then.

  • This thread reminds me of the scene from 40 Year Old Virgin:

    David: Hey, Paula.
    Paula: Yeah?
David: I gotta tell you something. I'm really excited about it. Uh, for the first time, today, I woke up, I came to the store, and I - I feel confident to say to you that if you don't take this Michael McDonald DVD - that you've been playing for two years straight - off, I'm going to kill everyone in the store and put a bullet in my brain!
Paula: David, what do you suggest we play?
David: I don't care. Anything! I would rather - I would rather watch "Beautician And The Beast". I would rather listen to Fran Drescher for eight hours than have to listen to Michael McDonald. Nothin' against him, but if I hear "Yah Mo B There" one more time, "Yah Mo" burn this place to the ground.
Paula: You're such a smartbutt. Get back on the floor!
    [Paula walks away]
    David: [cough-mutters] Ah-f--k you!

  • You can play music where you work?

     Apparently, it's considered "unprofessional" here.

Maybe I should look for a new job...

Who consideres it that? The floor manager or team captain or whatever?

    Screw him.

  • The CIO, CEO, and pretty much everyone else on the executive board. I got busted for playing music once, and reprimanded for having Winamp running after lunch.

  • That's ridiculous.

When I was testing Vista in the Microsoft labs, we had a folder on our lab server which contained various pieces of media - audio, video, DRM content, etc. - which we used to confirm system operations. When we had downtime, which wasn't often, we tried to replace the files with the most messed-up media we could find.

I pwn3d the video file for weeks with this. (Actually, my own clip from the same film, which starts at around 0:48 of this clip.)

That would be seen as being even more unprofessional than playing music. Doing both, screwing him while singing "Can't touch this" would probably get you arrested.

I wonder how difficult it would be to find the zipper on those ridiculous pants he used to wear. Maybe they were drawstring, or elastic...

  • @brettdavis4 said:

There's no such thing. There are only varying degrees of "crappy". You have "really crappy" and "pretty crappy" and "sort of crappy" and "a bit crappy" and once every decade or so you find something "only slightly crappy".

    Usually, it's from KMFDM.

Cue the people saying KMFDM isn't techno.

  • dhromed -

I had this exact same issue at one of my previous work places. We were using windows machines...so I just would log into the MP3 server and close the file share session for the annoying MP3. No one could figure out why whenever this guy tried to play Bruce Springstien the MP3 server would start acting up.

     :-)
