IE6 WTF

  • So, in Internet Explorer 6, go to about:cheese. You'll see that the title bar AND the page now contain the word 'cheese'.

    Now type about:<a href="xyz">a</a> in the address bar. Notice that there is now a link in the title bar, and on the main page.

    Now try this: about:<iframe src="http://www.google.com"></iframe>. Enjoy browsing google in your title bar.

    Note that I was able to use this method to bypass a net kiosk's charging system at a hotel I was recently staying at (create a link to Notepad, use notepad to write an HTML file containing an iframe, then create a link to that file). I ended up setting up all the kiosks to full screen repeat a Rick Roll of the hotel lobby... the PCs had speakers, too... never gonna give you up...

  • What version of IE6? I don't get that under mine...

     About dialog says 6.0.2900.2180.xpsp_sp2_gdr.070227-2254

    In the title bar? This sounds sick.

  • My IE 6 version returns the following:

    Action canceled

    <font style="COLOR: black; FONT: 8pt/11pt verdana">Internet Explorer was unable to link to the Web page you requested. The page might be temporarily unavailable.</font>
    <font id="LID1" style="COLOR: black; FONT: 8pt/11pt verdana">

    Please try the following:

    • Click the refresh.gif (82 bytes) Refresh button, or try again later.
    • If you have visited this page previously and you want to view what has been stored on your computer, click File, and then click Work Offline.
    • For information about offline browsing with Internet Explorer, click the Help menu, and then click Contents and Index.

    Internet Explorer

    </font>

    Version 6.0.2800.1106 in WINE

    Wasn't IE 5 the last version to support random HTML in the about: namespace?

  • I got an "Action canceled" page as well when going to "about:cheese".

    My IE is version 6.0.2900.2180.xpsp_sp2_gdr.070227-2254.

  •  You might wanna look at updating your IE6 with a few security patches.  The about: hole was fixed some time in 2003-2004ish at the latest, around the same time as it was fixed in Mozilla.

  •

     This only works on non-patched IE system, or the web browser control / IE ActiveX instances M$ fuxed (aka quick/sucky patch) it so the main browser window doesn't do that because of a security flaw.

  •  The Real WTF is that you haven't patched IE in five years.  Your PC is so full of spyware that you really should just burn it.

    Wow, what happened to actually reading the post? It's not his computer, but a public terminal. That was the whole point of the story.

    Exactly.

    My interpretation: He went to youtube, found a music video of Rick Astley and let it play in full screen. Apparently it's a fad to mis-direct people to the video of that song. Kinda like goatse, but in video form. And totally not offensive. /shrug

    Have you not seen Rick Astley?

    To be honest, I prefer this video. It's more amusing for people who get the joke, especially if they read xkcd.

    Also, when did we get new trolls?  I must have missed that when I was gone for a week.

  • Anybody remember when about:mozilla in IE gave you a blank page with a blue background? Doesn't seem to work anymore, unfortunately.

  • Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\AboutURLs]
    "mozilla"="res://mshtml.dll/about.moz"
