Mashup Challenge $100,000 prize - WTF if Spectate Swamp wins?

I'll point them all here for the links and discussion. If it doesn't get locked. Maybe some of this will get back to the NetSquared mashup group and they will reinstate the Swamp search. If not they will look bad. Even badder than the naysayers here.

Right, it is everyone else who looks bad, not you.  Various people have addressed every single claim you have made, and asked relevant questions.

What do you do?  You ignore any relevant criticisms or questions and simply repeat the same stuff over and over again.  That's not much of a discussion.

    @SpectateSwamp said:

Then they will miss the traffic that my next press release will generate.

"Press release".  Right.  You are so far off anyone's radar that even the local newspapers in "Backwater Hicktown, Canada - Population 82 + 1 three-legged dog" don't care about you.

Maybe you should go public with your threats against the Olympics, China and various organizations.  That ought to generate a lot of press coverage in the real world.  Of course, you wouldn't do that because you are cowardly, hypocritical liar.  Just like you wouldn't admit that your "Tokin" company is related to marijuana, when some local First Nations people protested against it.

Okay, I was wrong.  You are a troll.  You are troll who is so dedicated that you wasted decades of your life and squandered your reputation to perpetuate a couple of bad jokes that are only funny to you:

    • SSDS
    • Magic Stones
    • Dinosaur Skin

I really feel sorry for your family.  I mean, it's one thing to sully your online name (not worth much as long as you try to remain more-or-less "anonymous").  But not only did you publish your name, address, picture and videos of yourself online, you also got in the mainstream newspapers (which are also proudly posted online).  Do you realize people are laughing at you?  Those who aren't laughing are annoyed.  Those who aren't annoyed feel sorry for you.  On the bright side, you found the perfect site to showcase your colossal failure at...well, everything.

On the off chance that you are somehow being serious - if we don't find anything without SSDS, and nobody else uses SSDS, I guess you are the only person who can "find" anything, huh?  Congrats.

I'm pretty sure most dinosaur finds are more like dinosaur thefts. The people that find it never get any recognition. There would be droves of people that Robert Bakker stole dinosaur finds from. The guy that found the fish head, said he called the tyrell museum in Alberta. He was going to give the stone to them. They were so arrogant with him only asking where he found it. He gave them the wrong river. All these great dinosaur people are doing so at public expense and with threats of jail time for anybody that has anything worth while. The 3 dino skin hunters from here will not provide any locations until ransoms have been paid. We'll post some pictures but no locations. Screw the Robert Bakkers of the World.

Yesterday I made a sandwich and one of the pieces of bread had a big hole in it. Also, one of the pickle chips had *2* holes in it. Therefore I must be at least 2x the shaman Swampie is, because the stuff I find has more holes. I should've put the sandwich on my wooden table, taken some photos of it, then screened the photos on an LCD and taken wonky off-axis video of it, mangled it through a half dozen transcoding runs, then uploaded it to ebay along with 200 pages of rambling incoherent line noise for sale for $9,999,999,999,999.99 - a reasonable bargain, given the hol(e)y food's awesome powers.

But I was hungry, so I just ate it instead.

Despite the (apparent) decade of work on SSDS, and the newspaper clippings, I'm still not entirely convinced...
    - Seems unlikely a real newspaper would run this many articles about the same crackpot
    - The text of the articles seems sort of Swampy in places
    - It wouldn't be hard to make those articles with a printer and a camera
    - The line number labels in the SSDS source aren't even close to the actual line they're on. I can see way-too-low numbers -- lots of new code was added after the label was made, but "line_32500:" is on line 10115. WTF, he deleted over 20000 lines after he made this label? Also, there's less than 100 lines between 4000 and 12000.

I think he is a toxic combination of genuine nutjob and annoying troll.  Yes, his beliefs are real, but he is also deriving a perverse amount of pleasure from annoying others (in his words, he likes to "rile up" the forum.)  If you think about it, many trolls got attention by pretending to be retarded, for laughs - Spectate is the real deal.

If all of this is really a hoax, then Spectate is truly an insane troll genius.  The only other explanation I can think of is that Spectate is not Doug Pederson, but some enraged arch-enemy of Doug's who is hell-bent on ruining Pederson's reputation.  I still can't think of a reason why a real troll would publish his real name, pictures, address and videos.  AFAIK, trolls are supposed to maximize annoyance with minimum effort, while avoiding embarrassment in the real world.

My friend Martyn Stubbs did all kinds of downloads from the shuttle when he was managing Shaw Cable in North Vancouver. He is quite famous for it. They are out there and that sparrow did spot the so called artifact. Download the video of the Mushroom Cloud that I captured. Lots of movement way up in the cloud. I showed the video to a young lady I knew. She said she saw it just across the river from the golf course. But it was 2 weeks after the one I videoed????

It's great to see some of you are digging into the code. Quite simple isn't it. Anybody but anybody can figure that logic out. I do have quite a few more write-ups on my medicine stone escapades. I will upload them along with more video artifacts.

I'm not really damaging my reputation too bad here. From checking the video counts. There are fewer than a couple dozen viewers. A pretty small group really.

FishHead update. My other friend came by last evening. He is going to a storage area he has to look for the photo. He tells me he sent 3 or 4 pictures to the Tyrell Museum. They were quite arrogant with him, to the point where he hung up on them.  Damn thieving Dino Gurus. How about those pictures back. He also said more of the fish was buried under river rock. He is comming back after the weekend. I sure hope he finds that picture. This is probably the greatest dino find ever and just a handful of us here know about it.

You forgot the aliens DerulaSwamp. View them with slow motion. The best is the tobacco leaf flyer.

First the control files that have it run from a CD the exe that is run from the auto run is special.exe (just a renamed copy of search.exe) When the name matches with that in cmd(45) - line 45 in control.txt file then it starts and runs with the prompts comming from cmd(46) (47) and (48) for prompts #1, #2 and #3.

    tobacco leaf flyer

Then the control file for the display of the best video starting at 46 seconds in and plays in slow motion for 5 seconds or so freezing on the changing final frame for a few more seconds.

The "speeed" should be changed to "speed" I had it deactivated for some reason.

    Tobacco leaf flyer

Hmm, maybe Spectate is not a troll after all.  Maybe it is 100% mental illness.  I ran across a guy like this in university, on the Computer Science general discussion newsgroup.   He had delusions of grandeur (claiming he could predict or influence the future) and he was convinced the campus police and government were out to get him.  He also claimed he could write some kind of uber-program (I think a Google replacement?) - sound familiar?  Nothing anyone could say would persuade him to move an inch from his paranoid stance.  One or two people felt the guy was genuinely mentally ill.  It was also the case on that group that everyone posted with their real names (or at least student ids, which were derived from their names).  Of course, it is easy to spoof the "from" header in NNTP, but I doubt he did that.

Spectate, please get professional help.  For the sake of everyone's mental health.

So go ahead.  <font color="#ff0000" size="6">Please demonstrate SSDS to a non-technical audience. </font> You have friends, right?  You keep talking about your buddies who accept you and your beliefs for what they are.  You mentioned in one of the articles that you have enough friends not to worry about strangers laughing at you.   You have family, right?

Demonstrate SSDS to a small audience of friends and family.  They should be awestruck by its ease of use and power, so they'll naturally start using it themselves.  Then use your camcorder to record video testimonials, where they will use the program and explain how much they like it.  You LOVE video, right?  Here is your chance to put it to good use.

You have no excuse for your friends and family not to use SSDS.  Or are they part of the conspiracy, too?

If you can upload ONE video of ONE person other than yourself who loves SSDS, maybe you could convince someone here.  Highly doubtful, but maybe.

WHY DO YOU KEEP COMING HERE AND POSTING THE SAME BS WHEN CLEARLY NOBODY CARES?</font>  Why are you so hell-bent on convincing everybody of your awesomeness?  I'm sure you will just ignore these very reasonable questions, but I gave it a shot.

  • More Aliens than you can shake a stone at.

There was a lot more action in that video. It's been so long that I forgot. That tobacco leaf shoots straight up into the clouds at a distance. In the middle of the screen. Way too fast for the human eye. But birds and Shamen with camcorders can see them.

And that fish is so big it could swallow a horse. Truly a sea monster. I sure hope Roger B. can find that picture this weekend.

Maybe Martyn Stubbs will share a few of his UFO video. I should call him. Haven't talked to him in a while. He might be more weird than me with all that alien stuff....

Tobacco leaf flyer. very very fast and is showing off. Just like me. Some leaf, some artifact. Maybe a magic camcorder. Or the power of the stones. Or I'm really good at faking this stuff.

Years ago, a man with an average job in data processing and few ties to society found a pair of magical stones. He knew instantly that they were magical, although he could not articulate how. He took the stones home and kept them near him while he slept.
The stones inspired him to create a computer program, and feverishly he did so. The program was a strange maze of magical numbers with no resemblance to any real application. He could not understand why he had created it, but he knew that he had to somehow use it.
As he studied the flow of the program the stones had written through him, his grasp on computer programming as we know it became weaker, and his mind began to comprehend the logic of the stones. While he could not understand the program's true purpose, he could add other code to the program to perform tasks that, while strange, were at least comprehensible to human minds.
Compelled to use the program somehow, he added to it every operation he could find a way to implement within its alien logic, and he changed his personal workflow so that he would have reasons to use the strange new functionality. Believing the program to be a work of genius, he advocated that others use it like himself. He invited those who said they could not comprehend the program to visit him so that they would be exposed to the mind-altering magic of the stones. None visited.
It may seem that these stones and the program they wrote are evil, that they bring madness and destruction, but the truth is more complex. Run under the right circumstances, given the right sequence of arcane commands, the program could channel the magic of the stones to open a data connection to another world. By using the program to search the world of the stones and uncover its secrets, the user can also uncover a dark secret that threatens to destroy our own world, and use the stones' magic to save both worlds from a threat beyond human comprehension.
However, in order to create the program, the stones warped the mind of their original finder too far to their own logic. The worlds can only be saved by a user whose mind is still human, who can apply the rationality and logic of our own world to the world of the stones and find the secrets that link the two worlds.

Honestly, this program has the worst interface I've ever seen, what the hell happened to the default form style provided by Visual Basic? You've instead created some butt ugly greenish background with a huge list. No tutorial, no quick start guide, nothing. Most people here have a technical background and they don't understand how it works and now you're crazy enough to assume the general public are going to use it? You're truely insane, you provide no docs, nothing!

This is my last post since your ignorance will only anger me even more. FYI, don't you dare come back to Neowin.

    Read this carefully:
WE. DO. NOT. HAVE. YOUR. FREAKING. CD.

Also you're always suggesting we download your video and play it slow and look for minute details. Then you upload your video on YouTube.
    1. YOU download it. If you can figure out how to download from YouTube, my opinion of your intelligence will go WAY up. (Yes, there're tools for this, but we can't be bothered to use them to view crappy video of leaves and bugs in slow-mo.)
    2. YouTube *RE-ENCODES* videos and *SCALES* *THEM* *DOWN*. We can't see much detail in the crappy low-res version.
    3. Don't post a 5 minute video of clouds rolling by to show us a leaf flutter by at 0:51. FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THAT IS GOOD, EDIT!!! You just wasted 5 minutes of my life. I WANT THEM BACK!
    4. "Video artifacts" are the light-colored blocky crud around darker things (like trees). Insects are NOT video artifacts, even if you don't notice them until you watch the video.
    5. A 1/4 second video of a leaf or insect fluttering by is NOT evidence of aliens or the supernatural.
    6. Even if it is a tobacco leaf.

Here's a challenge: Download a video from YouTube. Note that it's a .FLV file. Get SSDS to play it slowed down. Then post a video of that. ...video or it didn't happen

You did not meet their entry criteria - that alone means you could never win. They have no interest in you ar this thread in all probability (they may not even know www.thedailywtf.com exists).

Techies understand the problems with SSDS (hard to maintain source etc.), non techies are happily uses to a world of simple to use applications with mouse support and help / tooltips that are integrated. Non techies expect applications to be easy to understand and forgiving when mistakes are made.

SSDS on the other hand requires people to remember an arbitary series of commands that must be entered at specific propmts (prompts which are ignorable in some situations) with a minimal amount of help provided by SSDS. When they manage this they are left with something that provides the search functionailty of notepad or media playback they could have used media player for...

I'm not sure the etymology of "shaman" is covered in Spectate's Grade 9 education.  He is really above that kind of intellectual geekery.

He cannot even spell his own name - his SourceForge project is called SpecatateSwamp....  Also, he probably thinks "shamen" is a "clever" "pun" (like most of his renamed thread titles).

Sadly, he has already covered this in another thread, on another forum:

     http://www.daniweb.com/forums/showthread.php?t=74992&highlight=spectateswamp+edit

I'll give you the Cliff/Coles notes:

SpectateSwamp: #1 reason for editing video is to cut out crime.  Don't incriminate yourselves.

Forum Member #1: Sorry, what's your point? (This isn't even a video forum.)

SpectateSwamp: BLA BLA BLA nature BLA BLA BLA video BLA BLA BLA Rodney King  BLA BLA BLA political forums

SpectateSwamp: Another good use for editors is to view video artifacts.  It helps if you have a bird in the picture.  Birds can see video artifacts.

Forum Member #2: This is highly amusing, considering you just posted a thread about how it's completely unnecessary to edit video.

SpectateSwamp (direct quote): "It's not really editing. Just using an editor. My custom player does
a reasonable job of slowing down the action. But I must agree that
editors do have a purpose in "better viewing of digital artifacts"

So technically I'm still not editing. Just viewing the detail with one.

I have yapped so much about not editing. That it came back to bite
me. That kind of stuff happens to people all the time."

Forum Member #2 (direct quote): " Just using an editor.... to edit?

    You're not making any sense."

Notice how Spectate starts off talking about editing to remove incriminating evidence, then as soon as someone calls him on his shit, he start talking about editing to view video artifacts.

Kinda like he used "Stones" to refer to medicine stones and the Rolling Stones in the same post.  (Another "clever" "pun".)

As soon as anyone advances a cogent point of criticism or a valid line of inquiry, Spectate will simply redefine the whole discussion.  If you could prove to Spectate that SSDS doesn't do search, he would simply claim it was a video player all along.

Did you. Not. Read my post? We don't want. To download 170 MB. Of freaking clouds. To see. One second of LEAVES.

I MIGHT look at your video if you would bother to snip out the boring parts. You want us to look at a LEAF. Don't make me wade through a half hour of clouds to find it. YES, clouds are PRETTY and we all ought to spend more time appreciating nature's beauty, BUT I can get a much better view of them through my window than watching ANY quality of video! When I want to watch CLOUDS, I watch CLOUDS. Not VIDEOS of clouds.

Now if you want me to look at your leaf, EDIT THE DAMN VIDEO. I'll grant that you catch more things in your videos because you just keep the film rolling. I'll even agree that you can sometimes get a better view of natural scenery by showing it as-is instead of editing. BUT now that you're done filming and have something SPECIFIC you want to show us, cut out the parts that DON'T show that thing. What do minutes of clouds and wind noise have to do with your leaf? NOTHING. Then EDIT MOST OF IT OUT. A 1/2 second video of a leaf shouldn't be much longer than a second or 2. And certainly not A HUNDRED FREAKING MEGABYTES!!!!

Come on JoeMckSwamp take a look. I'm sure it will be worth it for you. (104Mb) This thing shoots straight up into the clouds, after the pass real close up. What the H is it? It's a playful Leaf anyway. You will be excited. This group should have the software to expose it even better than dumb old Spectate. Any swampies out there that want to help out here?

Do you not understand? Nobody wants to download that duration and size of video for a second or so of 'interesting' footage. This is the whole point of editing video - to provide a focused and meaningful experience for the viewer.

Although re-encoding the video will cause quality loss there are many tools that will allow you to cut mpg video without requiring the result to be encoded again, therefore there is no quality loss. Personally I would have expected such a self proclaimed expert on the evils of editting to have at least looked at what can be done with editors before dismissing them </sarcasm>

I was hoping that with all the experts here. Somebody could do a better job of displaying the video than me. I'm a Desktop Search expert and video nut. I stay away from editing. It would cut into my video time.

Most of us may not be experts with video, however the original recording is the limiting factor. If there are compression artifactsin the original there isn't a lot that can be done.

    @SpectateSwamp said:

No you are not. You have written a single file searching tool, this (as you have been told before) is not what desktop searching means. Plus the code is awful and you are so uninterested you cannot even be bothered to maintain (or even delegate the administration) of your own sourceforge project.

    @SpectateSwamp said:

    Indeed.

     @SpectateSwamp said:

Odd decision, surely one of the reasons to record video footage is so other people can view it. Long, dull and meaningless videos with only a few seconds of interesting content are going to be ignored by the masses. Edit them properly and people will watch.
