Skype doesn't know how to sort
-
-
Let me guess - it's using local time on the computer it's running on and doesn't even attempt to sync things up between clients?
-
They're too busy adding new smileys and videos or some shit to worry about such pointless stuff...
And yes, I know the people making the smileys aren't programmers, but whoever had to rework the menu to actually fit all of this crap was.
-
That's been broken for a few days now.
Skype releases have devolved into a roller coaster of bug making and bug fixing patches. You have zero choice but to keep going forward, hoping this next update won't be the one to completely break something you need for your work.
But sure, tell me some more how I should accept this kind of system on my primary OS.
-
They've been learning from Jeff Atwood?

Sounds familiar....

kype releases have devolved into a roller coaster of bug making and bug fixing patches.
Time go switch back to ICQ!
-
-
Is this web skype, desktop skype, or mobile skype?

While you're being snarky, that new translate feature they added is basically FUCKING MAGIC.
Seriously.
Try it.

Oh, so it's open source methodology. Awesome. Open source is making everything fucking terrible. I love it.
-
Maybe you've got the same thing @lorne_kates has. Are you on a Rockchip?
-
Desktop Skype!
-
That's different, of course.
-
I find sending just a dot after someone has taken longer than expected helps Skype sort this out. Not that that isn't retarded. But it seems to try a to get replies when you send something.
-
I remember Skype acting funny whenever I changed my system clock (I used to run Linux on the same machine but didn't configure it to use localtime instead of UTC so booting into Windows kludged the clock).
So for example my clock would be set to 5:00, and I'd receive some messages. I fix the clock back to actual time 2:00, and as a result any new messages pop up BEFORE the messages that I received at 5.
I'm glad I don't use Skype these days.

No, just Microsoft being fucking useless as usual .
-
No!
Remember!
If it sucks and it's open source -- then it's open source's fault.
If it sucks and it's not open source -- it's still open source's fault.

(I used to run Linux on the same machine but didn't configure it to use localtime instead of UTC so booting into Windows kludged the clock
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\TimeZoneInformation] "RealTimeIsUniversal"=dword:00000001
But you knew that already.

Emily Is Away
One of the least violent games I've played where I learned to hate the protagonist by the end of the game.
-
Been running that for years. I've heard results would vary/be unreliable on older windows, but win7 and win10 have been solid for me with that setting.
-
This started to happen to me, I think the issue is because your clock is set differently than the person you're chatting with. If you sync your clocks, the messages should appear as expected. (Yeah, that's a huge wtf, but moving on.)
Basically, it seems to be working like this:
Person A is on the west coast (GMT-8)
Person B is in the mid west (GMT-6)Person A sends a message
Skype (presumably) converts it to UTC, which only shifts the hours
Person B's desktop client then sorts the received message by the converted timestamp. If Person B's clock doesn't match person A's, it will resort the chat history to slot it in where it 'belongs' rather than push it on the end of the chain where it actually belongs. (This probably has something to do with supporting syncing from multiple devices, like if you send a message from your phone, it shows up on your desktop client.
Interestingly, if you close/reopen skype it will sort the messages in the proper order, but as soon as you get a new message, if the clocks are still out of sync it will fuck up again. So you can 'hack' your partners clock settings by adjusting your clock until the message shifts where it doesn't belong.
That's obviously a feature, not a bug.
-
You know what this actually feels like? It kind of feels like the 'Set Time Automatically' setting is going to an NTP server that is slightly desynced between regions, and this is a side effect of that slight difference.
-
Are you saying skype will fuck up IM conversations if you're not sharing the same local time?

Tigers don't purr.
-
Do you mean that you're not a tiger or Arantor doesn't make you purr?
-
Wait, I saw a picture of @Arantor with a tiger cub and @royal_poet wasn't in the picture. Is that tiger cub the mysterious third person or is it now a 4-way relationship?
-
Arantor inspires many things. He's just a cute one.
As for the third... Some tiger-ish tendencies, but mostly tame. Not sure if she's bitten Arantor before. Paging @Arantor.
-
Don't let that playful comment or exterior fool you, @Luhmann. Let's just say if roused, @royal_poet's claws are as vicious as a tiger's.
Oh, and biting has been a thing...
for the TMI weary.

, if the clocks are still out of sync it will fuck up again
Reminds me of our system's original "you are about to be logged out" feature. It was set from the server time but relied on JavaScript for the pop-up time. Bug reports of not being able to log in and having only seconds before getting the warning (designed for 10 or 20 minutes by default, depending). Took me a few minutes to debug that and change it to behave!
-
For me, this is broken with whomever I'm talking. Still not fixed, BTW.
-
Still not fixed, BTW.
Yes, they are too busy breaking the unread messages indicator.
-
In the meantime, cursevoice ( http://beta.cursevoice.com ) is a very reasonable alternative.
-
-
-
So if closed source does something, it's not their fault, it's still the fault of open source? Seems legit.
-
I can see why it took 21 days to craft that devastating reply.
-
It also shows that yours only took 3 hours.
-
Yeah well the first 2 hours and 59 minutes I spent composing an epic poem in the vein of Beowulf describing my family's quest for quality software in the face of the monster open source over 6 generations, in defiance of the King's orders.
Then I thought of the one-sentence wisecrack, so I did that instead.
