🔥 Discomafia - How would it work?
-
And you're betting there won't be server cooties at 1:25?
Is that a threat?
You are 1-shot Jeff Atwood! Once per game, during the night, you can cause a massive cootie storm and take Discourse down. When you do, no action that night except yours counts as submitted.
-
Hmm....a fail.d theme? The mafia is TDWTF faction?
-
You are Discourse-aligned. Your goal is to use the daily banning to remove all uncivilized threats, ensuring that nobody can stop Discourse from becoming the forum platform for the next 10 years.
You are TDWTF-aligned. Your goal is to take control of the forum, such that you cannot possibly be eliminated, and cause Discourse to fade into obscurity. To aid you with your goal, your faction is awarded a nightly XSS exploit on a selected user, causing them to become self-banned and no longer welcome here. You may discuss your plans in a separate forum with your fellow TDWTFers.
-
Yessssss.
-
And then instead of having roles like "police officer", we have roles like "@blakeyrat" and "@ben_lubar", given to people other than @blakeyrat and @ben_lubar, of course.
-
The biggest challenge would probably be to stop the town from siding with the Mafia.
-
Make Discourse the Mafia, like when Jeff was here trying to control how we did things.
-
So, the @ben_lubar power is a blocker? Bore someone with DF videos until they give up and go back to bed without performing their night action?
-
Bore someone with DF videos until they give up and go back to bed without performing their night action?
no, that's the assasination action.
-

I was thinking Wanderer, actually.
You are @ben_lubar. You enjoy tinkering with obscure languages and technologies, creating amazing things nobody ever notices. Each night, you have to target an user with your latest Go program, which downloads all their posts and translates them into Lojban on the fly. This action has no noticeable impact, except for slight cooties.
-
Oh geez, I almost posted to this topic instead of the Mafia Ded topic.
-
Unfortunately, @Quietust, @immibis, and @ender would only work if it was a TDWTF mafia and not a Discourse-specific one.
Edit: Same with @dhromed, @morbiuswilters,
@bstorer@moderator, and @belgariontheking.Although, someone could still be @Nagesh or @SpectateSwamp. Not @MatNewman, though.
-
TIL you don't have to be a mod to change Categories.
-
Oooooooooohhh can I appropriate the sjw role?
-
Would you really want to be @Fox though?
-
I was thinking of going off the medication over Christmas, why not start early?
-
You are @Fox. Your crusade for social justice and the end of tranny murdering doesn't end on just one forum. Your goal - to make the Internet a safe space again. Your tool - 9000-post flamewars created overnight. Unfortunately, Discourse's support for such long topics is visibly lacking... Each night, you can accuse a person of murdering transsexuals and drag them into a flamewar, until the length of the topic causes enough jellypotato to make the site unusable for them.
-
Wait, why wouldn't you make @blakeyrat an Arsonist? :P
-
You are @ammoQ. Your mission is to lock any thread that becomes toxic, preventing them from devolving into
90-9000-post flamewars. Each night, you can nominate someone for the CLOSED-ASDESIGNED badge, suspending them indefinitely from the forum.
-
Wait, why wouldn't you make @blakeyrat an Arsonist?
The problem is that half of this forum makes for good arsonists or serial killers.

You are @Maciejasjmj. You are compelled by a need to atone for the sins of one of your past lives. In order to quench the shame caused by the raging flames, each night you MUST select one person to save from any harm that comes to them.
-
You are @izzion. Gathering information might be your strong suit, but communication is not. Each night you can target an user and learn their alignment and role, but posting those information in any public thread causes you to instantly ragequit and self-ban. Your death in this way does not end the day.
-
Unless you count death by boredom, I wouldn't work as one of those.
-
You win the exchange. :)
-
-
Oh! Oh! Can I be vanilla equivalent or something?
-
I think that slot is taken.
You are @boomzilla. You're not exactly sure what you're here for, or what you're supposed to be doing. Once in a while, you get a nagging feeling that there's some job that you should be doing right now, but it wanes as quickly as it comes. As such, you have no special abilities other than your vote and faction kill, if applicable.
-
What if I wanted to be a 1337 h4x0r?
-
You are @boomzilla. Every night, you must pretend to do your job. You submit one member for banning. You may, or may not, go through with the banning (mod's choice). Every day, you must post at least once about the "kids on your lawn[1]".
So basically a weak vigilante.
Maybe morph the kids on the lawn part into a weak serial killer role?
[1]. Yeah - I know. That won't work, cause it gives the role away.

The year is 2023, and the Web as we knew it is no more.
Discourse has taken everyone by surprise. We were fools not to trust in Jeff Atwood's 10-year-plan - and not to notice the changes around us. But how could we predict that? First, they went for the easy targets - swiftly taking over forums, chats and e-mails, dooming the old platforms into abandonment and obsolescence. People were worried, but glad - they hoped that with time, Discourse would become a quality product and a worthy replacement of the ancient technologies.
But by then, nothing could stop the revolution.
Telephones. Financial systems. Smart homes. Soon, everything was in Jeff Atwood's hands. The competitors were either squashed or assimilated, the hardware manufacturers forced into slave work designing new, more powerful hardware to run Discourse. It was a common sight, back in those days - a crying child, staring blankly into a 404 page where his old blog used to be, and his mother, holding back tears, struggling not to cry.
What happened? - the child would ask.
Discourse, son. Discourse happened - the mother would respond, reminiscing the days long gone.
The Daily WTF was one of the first to go. After all, there was hardly any code left in the world but Discourse code - and laughing at Discourse code was something only a fool could attempt. The forums didn't last much longer, either. The old, wretched hive of scum and villainy was dealt with mercilessly, as an example of what happens to those who refuse to accept the conduct of civilized discourse. Its DigitalOcean accounts suspended, its databases carefully shredded, its users forced into exile in the depths of the Internet.
Some of them gave up the fight, for the good of their families and friends. Under new identities, hiding their shameful past, they joined the Discourse team, developing new versions of the software. Others vanished from the Web altogether, never to be seen again.
But some of them... some of them remembered.

Meta.discourse.org
@sam, the topic progress bar requests already account for 50% of our server load. How's the work on the CDN?
It's already live on progressbar.discourse.org, we'll be implementing it next release, cc @zogstrip
What? Are you people serious?
You're moving a fucking progress bar to a CDN because you're too lazy to fix the shitty code which causes the load in the first place? Christ on a stick, that's so retarded I don't even know where to begin. What if your server is down? Or is behind a firewall? Everyone's progress bars just stop working?
Oh dear, another lowlife.
Don't worry, @sam. I got this.
@Maciejasjmj, @boomzilla the TDWTFer, is no longer welcome here!

Banned, anonymized, and with all his posts deleted. The pest won't be bothering us anymore.
@riking, is that you? Dear Lord, what happened to you?
@anon467421 said:
Oh no... there must've been an XSS exploit on that bastard's profile page...
Goddammit, @riking, stay with us! We can still unban you and give you your nickname back!
@anon467421 said:
No... I'm so sorry, @sam. They managed to disable the unban feature. I can still hold on, but just barely... once I refresh the page, I'll be gone.
But you know what that means. The trolling, the XSS, the uncivilized behaviour...
You don't... No. No. We destroyed them. They can't be back. They can't. They can't.
@anon467421 said:
They can. But we will fight, and we will win again, just like we won all those years ago.
For Jeff. For the forum. For civilized discourse. We... mustn't... give up...
...oh @sam, I feel it's time, it's time for me to refresh now and update to the latest version...
@riking! Don't... don't...
@riking, @boomzilla the Discodev, is no longer welcome here!

Fuck you man. You're getting my medical bill. I think I burst a lung laughing.
You should get a job on the frontpage or something.
-
Blasts from the past for those old enough to remember them:
Your name is @TunnelRat - your job is to incessantly harp on about H1B to the point where everyone else commits suicide. You are Very Hated.
Your name is @MasterPlanSoftware - your job is to, when lynched, or otherwise killed, to come back under a different name. You are Hated.
-
Your name is @Hanzo — you are a Ninja and your job is to make undetected changes to your posts.
-
Your name is @SpectateSwamp. Once during the game, you get to randomly reassign every player's powers for one round.
alternatively: Every round you talk to one random player about how the future of searching lies in keeping all information in a single text file on your desktop. This makes them so busy trying to refute your claims that your search methods are faster than Google's that they forget to use their power for the round, so you get to use it instead.
-
-
You get lynched on day 1 because it's implied everybody voted for you?
-
Or, maybe, if you get a single vote everyone else automatically votes for you as well?
-
Or maybe you get immediately ModKilled over and over and over. Because.
-
Could this guy keep being resurrected after some days just so he can be killed again?
-
What does that mechanic actually do?
Hated reduces the number of votes required to lynch (typically by one.) So 8 playing would normally require 5 to lynch - someone who was hated would only require 4.
Loved increases the number required.
