Star Wars Prequels - What they should have been

Guy re-imagines the Star Wars prequels using only the information in the original triology as "canon". So it's like a very well done fan fiction (no gay romance).

I always wanted someone to do this. Not just "fix" the prequel movies, but wipe the board clean and start anew. Even had a few ideas myself how it would work.

And now someone actually made that. And did a pretty good job at it too. Despite my rising Star Wars fatigue, I have to admit watching these was a pretty good time.

    Good parts:

The videos are extremely well plotted out. Various jedi powers are well designed and imagined. The political situation make sense. Every hint from the episodes 4-6 fits in perfectly.

Most importantly, Anakin's motivation and events leading to him turning sides are nearly flawless. By the time he "betrays the jedi", you can almost buy his reasoning for becoming the sith. None of that "younglings" shit.

Also, the Emperor is built up into a force to be reckoned. Character development in general is pretty good here.

    Bad parts:

Structure problems. All three scripts have pretty poor structure. Part one lacks the entire second act, and seems to go directly from the intro sequence to the final battle. The second one ends with Anakin's betrayal, which comes after a climatic battle. This is a pretty poor way to end a movie. Also, it has a major plotline that goes nowhere and is basically forgotten by the end. The third part is only half-way done ATM, but seems sort of boring and disjointed so far.

Also, this is all too fan-fictiony. It's all about jedis and battles. Like it or not, whimsical elements like the droids, ewoks, gungans etc. were always a part of Star Wars universe. This script does away with them entirely, and just deal with human-like characters involved in a serious political/military struggle. Kind of like a grown up Star Wars nerd would imagine his perfect movies to be, without any PG boards and toy merchandising managers butting in.

Finally, all these details put aside, the one major, fatal fault of any Star Wars prequel still remains - this is a story that shouldn't be told. No one wants to see movie after movie of everything turning to shit, and all the heroes plans and hopes getting quashed. That's why I stopped watching The Game of Thrones too. I can take a smaller personal story against a backdrop of tragedy, but if you're following the conflict itself, the heroes must take away some kind of victory. Shit is just too depressing otherwise.

Oh, there's still one more video to be made (the second part of the episode 3). But if I waited for that to come out, I'd lose any interest to share my impressions, so I'm posting this now.

  • The first first animation of ship landing made me laugh. It's cute in its own way.

But the Sith were the heroes there. That Jedi were too lame

  • That, for me, was the most depressing thing. I could handle JarJar, the stupid Yoda fights or the teenage drama of Anakin and Amidala, but the whole deal with the Jedi's killed it. I don't know exactly what I expected, but a bunch of bureaucrats with light sabers was not.

  • Have you guys seen the Red Letter Media reviews of the prequels? I find them hard to recommend, because they have this awful subplot about their reviewer character "Plinkett" abducting and murdering prostitutes which is REALLY awful (there are a couple of decent gags that come from it, but not gags worth the horribleness), but the actual long-form review stuff is pretty great:

    These are legendary.

I agree about the Plinkett subplot. It's the annoying filler in between great bits of insight.

That's why I like their Half in the Bag series. You get all the movie critique meat without any of the psychopath subplot vegetables. Sure, they have their own goofy storyline (confusingly involving another, different character named Plinkett). However, I find it less annoying since it doesn't interfere with the movie talk part of the show.

  • At one point some web cartoonist I follow (Ryan North I think?) lined up people to pay Red Letter Media $100 each for a copy of the Star Trek and Star Wars movie reviews with the wife and hooker murdering subplots edited out. Never happened, natch.

Someone at Red Letter Media thinks those are "art". I guess. Morons.

Cancelled with extreme prejudice. Before production.

  • I'm rewatching the Plinkett review of Star Trek Generations, and where he talks about how fucking CHEAP that movie was. Like how the production didn't even bother fitting all the cast members with the Deep Space 9-style uniforms, even though at that time in-universe they all should have been wearing them.

Ironically, one of the actors who didn't get a DS-9 uniform was Worf, despite Worf being on DS9 for like 3 years.

Then they recycled the Klingon ship explosion from fucking Star Trek VI. HOW FUCKING CHEAP IS THAT. SO CHEAP.

    But then, I'm weird.

Who's that guy who always complains about people posting the off-topic things in the wrong thread? Especially on of his threads?

Yeah. What, they are charging for creating new thread now? So he has to polute mine?

    Blakey is the worst..

  • I never complain about people posting things off-topic, I complain about people posting things that are fucking idiotic. I've stated this many times.

  • While not quite the same, I saw links to "Anti-cheese" versions of the prequel trilogy posted last week:

    Phantom Menace:

    Attack of the Clones:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZDlT59hqqtk

    Revenge of the Sith:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=14tMHjDkKLA

Haven't had a chance to watch them yet, but apparently they use the original material and cut out the dumb parts, such as Midichlorians and a lot of Jar-Jar's screen time.

  • Look at the closed captions in he is humming the intro music

edit: The author definitely didn't like jar jar bins

edit2: @dse is on the second movie
