Sharing love with Microsoft, again
-
Fuck you Microsoft, fuck your new Internet Explorer, and fuck your Windows update which automatically made it my default browser.
Though I must admit, the extra step between some app deciding it wants to be default browser and actually making it such is quite nice. Having to realize that default programs chooser opened up due to Opera's request was a bit confusing though - you could make some nice little message box.
-
You're gonna need this:
You're welcome

Still haven't moved to W10. And the more I hear about it, the worse the deal sounds.
Kind of like negotiating with Darth Vader. A desperate Darth Vader, trying to pivot his dying empire.

Can I hijack this thread? My computer auto installed a patch last night and today it's been BSOD with the fucking
:(
face and a KERNEL_SECURITY_CHECK error.
-
Recent updates from Microsoft (not all, but largely for Windows 10) have broken:
- Volume controls while screen is off.
- Microphone mute switch.
- Saving to disk for a very popular, widely used business critical piece of software. (we don't use it but almost every client we have does)
- Snapping in tablet mode at the default DPI despite constant popups telling me to do it on their own hardware.
- Lock screen playback controls... again...
- The getting started notification just asks me which app to install it with, five minutes after a fresh reinstall.
- Bluetooth, three times now, on their own hardware.
Can someone at Microsoft do me a solid and test this garbage before clicking deploy please? All in all a very noticeable, disappointing landslide in quality since Nadella got involved,
-
Mine auto-installed the same patch last night.
This morning, after putting in my password, I got a black screen. Uhh....
White words appeared: "Hi."
Out loud, I responded: "....hi?"
"We updated your computer", it continued.
"....uh, thanks?"
"All of your files are still there."
"....great...."
It then sat at that screen for ten minutes, making me increasingly doubt my files were still there.
Apparently this should have played when I upgraded to windows 10, a few months ago? Why is it just playing now?! Whatever. It eventually got me to my desktop just fine.
-
That's the November update. Included is the Messages app they added in 8.0 and removed in 8.1 because reasons.
-
Yeah, mine did the same, it took about 5 minutes on my end. What ever happened to the good old 'We're updating your computer, file 5 of 40 bajillion files. Estimated wait time of (x)'
-
I looked, because I was curious, it seems to have installed cumulative security patch KB3116900.
-
I've noticed that the updates list isn't accurate any more. There's no way a machine in storage for two months has only one update and is then fully updated. They must be batching them or something.
-

Today I've got some kind of update. A big one, as if it was entirely new Windows. The update process looked exactly the same as W7->W10 transition. Haven't watched the screen all the time, so I can't say if I had the same... encounter with it.And my wallpaper was gone! And because the default black background looks EXACTLY like Safe Mode, I thought everything went to hell!

I got it both with the original installation and with the "November" update.
-
Yeah, mine did the same, it took about 5 minutes on my end.
As did mine. Once it finished, I could no longer log in. Turns out it reset my keyboard layout...

Some fucktard has decided that your average computer user is an utter retard who cannot comprehend time. It's like the stupid Office 365 installer which downloads a few gigabytes. It does have a progress bar but do you think it tells you the ETA? Or the speed it's downloading at? No, all it says is "We'll be done in a moment". "Moment"? It's been downloading for hours! I think it's Microsoft that doesn't comprehend time...
-

Some updates work by reinstalling Windows (yes, they really do) via the upgrade path. The old version is in
Windows.old
and you can either downgrade to it if you are having issues or use the built-in disk cleanup tool to delete it to get more hard drive space.

Windows Update is indistinguishable from malware.
I've had multiple occasions where I thought my computer had been pwned and then it turned out it was just Windows Update making my computer do something really stupid visually.
-
I attempted to update windows 8.1 -> 10. After the update process and reboot the partition containing windows installation was corrupted.
Good that I have to use it only occasionally.
-
Windows 10 Enterprise, LTSB babies! For many things it might suck, but for everything else, the suckage won't happen!
I'll never see these updates, Windows will never reset my settings (because it's actually doing an "in-place upgrade" instead of patching files), unless it does (and we know already all the places this happens), I will never need to set my default browser (because it isn't set/reset to begin with).Life is good in the Vault....

I'm currently updating stuff on my 8.1 instance. For some reason, it won't play any sound out my speakers. Oops...time to restart...
-
So what you're saying is that this tired old joke is actually becoming reality?
-

I got that screen on the initial upgrade and then after the last build. Suspect it might happen every time an update increases the build number.

It's never reset any of my settings, and I'm not on LTSB. It hasn't even reinstalled Edge since I accidentally uninstalled it.
-
Yesterday, mine asked me if I wanted to continue using GIMP to edit PNGs or if I would rather use the photos app to edit them with its 0 editing tools.
-
0 editing tools
On a being-less-of-a-cock note, those edit tools are REALLY good for built into the photo viewer, and have very nice touch controls. And before I checked I didn't know they existed either.
-
Bonus WTF: Edge also became my default PDF reader. FUCKING PDF READER.

This. So fucking annoying, especially since there's a much better PDF app (Reader) available.
-
Wait, is that a screenshot of MS Paint with a screenshot in it?

Sadly wooden table was in a meeting.

I'm not on LTSB
Couldn't say, I'm still discovering what everyone else is experiencing by proxy.

I see Microsoft is doing its belgiumest to make sure Windows isn't fit for medical (or other can't-cause-unexpected-problems) uses.

..except for those who are more equal than others, of course.
-
The phrase "more equal" always makes me think of === operator.
-
I kinda wish JS had a ==== operator that compared values, i.e. two objects with the same contents count as equal. And maybe a ===== operator that compared how they look in the moonlight or something I don't know.
-
Does NaN ==== NaN?

didYouEver = ("dance with the devil" ===== true);
-
At first I read that as "Windows has detected that you have removed your mouse." and sadly, that actually made it more believable...
-
Windows has detected that you have removed your mouse
This is actually true for my laptop (actually, most of my laptops that use the Synaptics drivers). Half of the time it thinks that the touchpad got "disconnected" and then "reconnected" as another type of mouse (switching between SMB-whatever and PS2 emulated for raisins), which makes the driver crash until the next cold boot (no, a warm reboot doesn't work, and a "Quick-boot it's-actually-just-hibernation" shutdown won't work either).
-
Does NaN ==== NaN?
There are 4503599627370495 different NaNs, so while it might be the case, it's most often not.

-
So every time two NaNs are compared with ====, there should be 1% random chance that it will return true?

Hey, at least it's downloading. Went to upgrade xcode on my mac. "Waiting" For fucking what? After a couple reboots and more "waiting", it finally started. Fuck Apple.
