Just one minor change

"VA makes major changes to ..."
I guess one of the changes was the database password.
-
so this happened today:
Accalia> hey DatabaseAdministrator, what happened to our SQL-Node2 server?
DatabaseAdministrator> we took it offline for the big rename. it'll be back in a couple of hours as "Excalibur"
Accalia> -sighs- and you didn't tell me that my database server for this demo was going offline why?
DatabaseAdministrator> it's pre-service, no one should be using it.
Accalia> yes, but it's also the only SQL2012 server we had and you told me i wouldn't get my dev or test instances of SQL2012 until SQL-Node2 went live.
DatabaseAdministrator> oh.... oopsies?
Accalia> now I have to try to reschedule that meeting... you do realize this was the only time in all of December that I could get everyone who needed to be in this demo in one room at one time?
DatabaseAdministrator> oops?
Accalia> -sigh- ...no i don't work in any vapacity related to VA.... this was just the most relevant place to post the story.
-
this was just the most relevant place to post the story.
Right; because there's no kind of "New topic" button or anything.
-
apparently not:
i'm not sure how @lorne_kates managed that, but i've got to say i'm impressed

Um, excuse me, but if you want to rant about people going off topic and not starting a new thread, why not start a new thread to rant about it rather than going off topic?!?!?!?!???

Neither am I, and so am I.

Srsly.
There's this group of people, for convenience sake I'll call them "super-morons", who have some kind of weird fear of starting new topics. So what they do is like save up stories and then post them in some OTHER vaguely-related topic. But since they were saved up, they post them like seriously SECOND in the other topic and don't even give people like 10 minutes to discuss what the original topic was supposed to be about. Very annoying behavior.
You might even say super-morons who do that are the worst of the worst.
-
Wait, when did this become a thread about @mikeTheLiar?
-
You might even say super-morons who do that are the worst of the worst.
you know, that reminds me of a story i had saved up regarding a particularly moronic end user.... let's see here i've got that story saved here somewhere....
ah yes.
ahem
"`Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe:
All mimsy were the borogoves,
And the mome raths outgrabe."Beware the , my son!
The jaws that bite, the claws that catch!
Beware the PresidentsDaughter bird, and shun
The frumious ForumTroll!"
"... wiat, that's not the right one. let me try again...

Oh SNAP! I see what you did there.

I'm typing this on a computer named Daisy. I have a headless computer running Linux named australium and a Windows 10 machine named GODZILLA. Sometimes I connect to a computer at my university named ale.
But I don't rename things.
-
and a Windows 10 machine named GODZILLA.
YOU STOLE MY GAMING PC!??!
No wait it's still there. Huh.
-
Makes me wonder how many places have their servers named after sci-fi references.
-
ok... enough wondering... time to shower.
-
Machines in my household: HAL, Holly, Jarvis, GladOS and SHODAN.
-
Makes me wonder how many places have their servers named after sci-fi references.
LOTS of them. Sci-Fi and mythology are popular naming schemes.
One client has: Apollo, Zeus, Athena, Poseidon and Ares.
A local webhost has all of their machines named after Doctor Who references.
Our first server that had dedup was named "TARDIS".

TRWTF is DB Admins managing DNS. :wtF:
**EDIT:**strong text 14-year-old DB admins, that is. Basing my guess on their choice of name for a server in a professional environment.

a Windows 10 machine named
GODBOOMZILLADoes it yell at your cursor to "get off my desktop!!"?
-
No, but right now it's saying this:
-
OK, you people are making me jealous.
Servers here are named with a 3 letter acronym (no idea what it means) followed by a 3 digit number, then department acronym, followed by server purpose acronym, followed by the number of the server (starting at 001).
So, our User Acceptance Testing Oracle DB server is named something like ABC012DEFOTD001
(DEF being the department, OTD being Oracle Test Database)At least our application servers have actual domain names (GHIuat.domain is the UAT app server where GHI is the application name's acronym)
-
Ours is similar, but it's usually not too bad to follow once you have the convention explained to you.

Why is that even a job cancellation reason? , dwarves cancelled their job with "Went insane" and were permanently removed from the (normal) job system entirely.
I'm pretty consistent. Different sites (home, school, work, BetaForce, NearlyFreeSpeech) are different Lord of the Rings kindoms/regions, and different machines are different characters from the corresponding region. School was "moria.twelvebaud.net" as it was a monster-ridden black pit in the misty Appalachan mountains, and had "thorin" and "xn--in-4ja" and "xn--glin-rqa" (aliases "oin" and "gloin"), whereas my home is "shire.twelvebaud.net" with "thorin" (same machine), "bilbo", "frodo", "samwise", etc. All of my machines pretty much do everything, so there's little point in assigning them role-based names.
Aww, the VetA is using WordPress but hasn't changed the "scream and die " handler. How cute...

It's an interaction with the 0.40 addition that moods are more than just single states and the 0.42 addition that children play games. So what's happening is the child is stuck in an endless loop of:
- I'm bored. What should I do?
- I'll play make believe!
- It's cold in here. I should get new clothes.
- Fuck it, I'm a loony. I don't need clothes.

which machine was which.
Nowadays, since they're all VMs, I can say with 95% certainty that any of the server machines are all exactly one machine.
Now, which instance... Well that's different.
-

All the servers where I work are named after Star Warses. But they sound servery.
Hoth. Carbonite.
The active directory domain is TheForce.

I hereby request @ben_lubar rename his dhromebook "Boomzilla".

I miss @dhromed.

I worked somewhere musician related. The servers were name after classical composers. Many developers would mispronounce Chopin; caused me to twitch.
My place now has pretty boring names. Started out somewhat descriptive: 123DEVDB01, 123WEBDB01 (123 referred to our street number as we had two locations on the same street) then we slowly moved to the parent company's infrastructure and now we get swdka,sq01.sasas* (The D tells us it is DEV, the SQ that it is a DB).
*Just mashed some letters together to illustrate pattern. I think there actually might be more meaning in some of the real characters but they are not obvious to me.
-
Hey, are you doing maintenance on Choppin' this weekend? I need to get some work done, can't be without that server for very long.
-
You could always do what docker does and stick two random words together. Like "fluffy_tesla" or "salad_salad".
-
I have had no control over the server names. I'm also not that creative. My own computers are Karla-DELL, Karla-Laptop.
Not very good at creative usernames either.
-
-
-
Is it a DELL Laptop?
Yeah...they give me free financing. I think at the time I named the Karla-DELL I wasn't planning to get a laptop.
My server is also Karla-Server and is also a DELL. Again this was not in the plan when I got my desktop. Did get the idea of buying a refurbished Dell server from hereHubby''s comp name: Hubby-nickname-laptop. Though he is more creative than me and probably should have thought of a better name..
When I check who is connected to our network...I am reminded our kids are more creative. (I hope it is only our kids).
-
I suggest you rename your server and laptop to use a more consistent naming scheme.
Karla-DELL
Karla-DELL

Probably.^^Damn DiscoFormatting.
-
Hmm, I probably should have capitalized my name and lowercase DELL for narcissistic raisins..
-
A sensible no-nonsense scheme. I have (with redaction) LOOSE-PC, LOOSE-LAPTOP, LOOSE-SERVER, LOOSE-CLOUD and LOOSE-DMZ. This tells me that they are mine, and what their intended / designed role was / should be. My router / Internet access point has not been renamed because it is just a "thing" (and for other raisins).
Whilst it is nice to know various bits / nodes are up / sane / running I generally do not worry is one or more is missing, but I know what is missing. I don't need to know if the router is there because it's obvious when it is not.
-
My Windows 10 desktop is called LOOPBACK-W8-PC.

You can have two different OS on that one.
Damn, didn't even think of that, would be a good pun!
Sadly, SHODAN is the only one that's dual booted, and I don't intend to change the names now...
-
-
Can't be they have a TIGHT-DMZ overe there
-
I will now rename my laptop, PC and server to:
