This isn't my Desktop btw. Mine looks a lot cleaner. And I'll never use Vista :) (that screen is another reason why not to) But I don't think the guy who sent me this screen uses ssds, either. I mean. Probably. But I don't think so.

    You decide wether TRWTF™ is

    2. My usage of the img-Tag's "width" attribute
    3. The gigantic Desktop icons
    4. The wallpaper
    5. The 4 running dekstop widgets
    6. The non-responsive outlook
    7. The >6 icons in quick start bar, one of which seems to be a Visual Basic (5? 6?) App with default icon
    8. The choice of software used (Vista, Outlook, Internet Explorer)
    9. The 15+ Systray icons
    10. The memory and CPU usage or
    11. The most obvious thing, that huge repitition of the Outlook title bar inside its own Window.
    1. For sure it isn't a good filename, it would be better without a space but more better with a different name entirely, also without a space
    2. The "width" attribute isn't bad, but not converting to a smaller picture for makng faster display of picture is more worse
    3. I agree, icons are too big
    4. If the person using the computer likes the wallpaper it isn't a problem really, I always use a solid color background though, with no wallpaper picture
    5. I don't know anything about desktop widgets (and I think you accidentally wrote desktop wrong, unless you actually means dekstop)
    6. Yes
    7. I don't use the quick launch bar, but Visual Basic App isn't the problem, and the default icon isn't a problem, the wrong thing is icons in general
    8. Yes, Vista isn't good neither is Outlook or Internet Explorer, Outlook is OK for some things I guess but there is a lot of better software available
    9. Yes, remove some
    10. Vista uses a lot of memory and makes Vista slow!
    11. That is for sure the worst problem. It must be caused by Vista, I guess.

    2. Yeah, I know. I felt to commit an additional WTF to the already WTFy picture
    1. I think this was the default wallpaper coming with his laptop, I'm not sure though
    2. Yeah, that was a typo. I actually means deckstop. It's got something to do with ships

Hey! I use my Quick Launch all the time. It's set to have 4 icons visible, but there's almost 20 total. What's wrong with that? My actual Programs menu contains hundreds (which are obviously manually sorted into parent categories), so I don't want to go there except for rarely-used apps.

That post ought to be about icons, because zzo38 said trwtf is icons themselves (at least that's how I understood it). I don't use quicklaunch though because I've abandoned my task bar alltogether. Launchy does quite well in starting apps.

They are? shrug I don't use either of them really. But I think, most reasonable ordering is treating Ü like U.

It's always good for some laughs though. We had a test lately, and the students were sorted to the different auditoriums by last name. It went something like: "A to F: room 01, G to M: room 02, M to Q: room 03, R to Z and Ö: room 04". That was great.

  • CPU usage isn't that much different than, say, XP. Memory usage is fairly high, yes, but that's a result of many factors - SuperFetch plays a pretty big part. When a lot of memory is required, Vista's smart enough to release some of it again.

  • I wonder why Vista does things like that. Don't realize what's it for
  • As I understand it, it's a quirk in the new window manager that may occasionally occur when a non-WPF program isn't responding. It doesn't happen vey often, though, but I've seen it happen on occasion with other programs (Winamp, for example).

I'm guessing it's a race condition, where the internal cache of the window isn't ready, so it somehow reuses the old buffer that it used for the titlebar (which is then scaled to fit width-wise). Something like that, at least.

    Launchy

I have the same situation as Abbydonkrafts. 4 muchmuch used apps, and the rest folt up behind the arrows.

    Pray tell, "Launchy"?

alt+space and then start typing what you want to do, it uses an index to display a list of possible things to launch as you type...

Pretty nice... I have always used the stock run box in windows for most things, so this is a bit of overkill, but nicely done.

Yes, and so does about half the German-speaking population and the ones who write the dictionaries. Unfortunately the other half (including the ones who write the telephone books) think that the most reasonable ordering is to treat it like UE. This leaves us unable to write software that behaves in a reasonably expected manner.

    Grrrr.

Reading this, I couldn't believe it at first. Then I checked, and you are right. Well WTF this is the most insane s2t I've ever seen! That's... crazy! How would anyone search at ae when he wants to find Ärzte? What the... I don't get it... I'ld say dictionary 1:0 telephone books here. Damn. This is insane. Umlauts suck. I'll go buy an English keyboard.

Using ALT+SPACE is what's bad for it, because ALT+SPACE is for open the window's control menu (and I often use ALT+SPACE,X to maximize, and stuff like that, sometimes I double-click the title bar to maximize instead). But if the key combination used was configurable then it would be better, probably still not the program I would use though

  • @zzo38 said:

But if the key combination used was configurable then it would be better

Of course it is. You know, it hasn't been coded by SpectateSwamp.

But to be honest, it doesn't offer the key combination I would like to use (only the windows key), but almost anything else.

  •  I was paying Call of Duty last night an these 2 or 3 german kids were in there.  I previously had though nothing was more annoying than 12 year olds yelling fuck every 2 seconds.  However, I found out that 12 year old yelling fuck every 2 seconds followed by high pitch german yelling is much worst.f

edit:  apparantly I've had this window open for a day or so before I replied, so it looks like I'm totally off topic.

vista + windows button + type = same exact thing.  index shows you all the things it brings up.  enter launches.

as for the vista bashing.  I don't know why the CPU usage is so high, but I owuldn't just blame it on Vista.  That's pretty dumb considering he has 15 things in the task manager.  Obviously that nonsense is going to be the things eating the memory and CPU.  My CPU usage is around 2-5% when I'm not doing things, and that's because of task manager.

  • @tster said:

Launchy is great on XP, I think I had problems on it with Server 2003 though (as in it never ran), and Vista's implementation is actually better as there have been a few times where Launchy failed to find something relevant but Vista will find anything that is attached to your start menu.

Please note that my experience with Vista is limited to my one week course I had a while ago, and some minor administration while my brother used it, and my experience with launchy is about 3 months of fairly steady use. [Alt]+[Space], f, [enter] was so much easier than clicking to launch Firefox.

Wow ... they've made this for Windows too =) I have a similar app for OS X (Amar Sagoo's Namely), it's great to have it for Windows too.

I don't know how the Run dialog is comparable -- it doesn't cover anything not registered in the Registry under AppPaths, and even then, you have to guess and remember the binary's name. IrfanView may or may not be in AppPaths, but what's the binary called? i_view32 or something equally useless. Launchy knows what the program's called, which is a lot easier. (Evidently it's not in AppPaths...)

    Thanks for the tip.

Spotted this on my way home from work one afternoon.  I've seen these busses before, but finally had a chance to grab my cell phone (camera) and snap one - which is also why the quality is so bad...  Really, if you had an unfortunate last name like this, would you want to slap it all over your business?

I can't seem to find it on Google, but about seven years back, I spent some time in Lancaster County, PA, and saw a trucking company that was called A. Dewey Pyle. The only thing I wondered is "what horrible first name did that guy's parents inflict on him to get him to use A. Dewey Pyle?"

Strictly speaking that's the correct one, as originally (and whenever the proper chars are unavailable), the German umlaut represents an 'e' ligature (like "æ"). Of course, in Scandinavia it's a whole different story...

I got the exact same problem mutiple times in Windows XP before our family got a new Windows Vista computer.  At the time, I was afraid to delete it, so I never did.

I've anonymized everything but my name.  If you play on Vilya, feel free to send me a mail or a /tell.

Here's a screenshot of the chat window showing the conversation.  Mostly the trolls and goblins yelling at us.

While I'm at it, I downloaded a free (!) MMO called Rappelz a while ago.  I managed to install it and boot it up, but I got the following when I tried to open the options menu

And this when I tried to open the help screen.

Guess I got what I paid for.  I'll be fair, though.  The shitty looking graphics are probably because my computer isn't that good.

It really took a long time. I feel dirty now.

On another note, it's fairly neat -- my guess would be that CS3 products actually share the same codebase for each platform :)

I think he was referring to the fact that your post was incomprehensible.   The drop-down was for languages, it has nothing to do with Latin America and Latin America has nothing to do with the Romans.  That's why we think you were high when you posted.

And lastly, I saw an amazingly ironic scene yesterday, but I didn’t get a picture of it: a Prius on the side of the highway, which had run out of gas!

As a Prius owner, I can elaborate on that one.  Also you'll all enjoy the WTFiness of it.  Nobody is really sure exactly what the technical reasons are, but the fuel gauge in the Prius is wildly inaccurate.  Owners-in-the-know tend to refer to it as either the "fool gauge" or the "guess gauge", but mainly they try NOT to look at it at all.  People have documented driving 200 miles in the summertime before the first tick on a full gauge disappears.  People have also documented successfully running it down to the last tick - blinking - without running out of gas, while others have run out of gas on the side of the road when the gauge still had a couple ticks on it.

And no, you can't really drive it on battery while out of gas.  It sounds fine in theory, but the system is so integral that the computer uses all remaining battery power to light up the dashboard like a christmas tree.  (Slightly facetious)  Oh, another WTF:  you can refill it with gas, but the dealer has to plug it into their whatchamacallit computer to turn off the ID10T dashboard lights.

But really, I do LOVE my Prius.  It's very impressive in most other ways.  :-)
