MFD Comments

  • Unfortunately the MFD comment thing won't take my picture URL. OMGWTF????

    <humor style="lame:programmer">

I extended Ctrl+Alt+Del and overloaded one of the comics to express my feelings about this site lately. I think the quality of discussions in the forum has considerably degraded, just like an enterprise application.

I've always thought this is the most fantastic sort of sophistry. Obviously he enjoyed it in the past, does not enjoy it as much now, and is making a post expressing his hope that it might return to its former value of entertainment for him. When people cease enjoying a formerly enjoyable activity for a certain length of time, they DO stop doing it eventually, once the enjoyment is no longer worth the trouble.

Expecting people to never say a word when something they enjoy becomes less enjoyable, and obliquely insulting them for doing it, is nothing more than wretched stroking of your own ego.

    Who (besides you) insulted anyone?

I disagree.   I think the OP is demonstrating a classic example of idealized nostalgia.  It's a bit of pining for the "good old days," which never actually existed in the first place.  TDWTF has never been some shining beacon of hope; it's pretty much always been the same.  Look at the quotes in that comic: "Brilliant" comes from a post 2.5 years ago.  The tag cloud is a year old.  "TRWTF" is pretty much as old as the site.  The forum software has always sucked.  Ol' Swampy, though he made a splash of late, has been spamming these forums for over a year now.  None of these things are a new development.

No one said that Perdido should say nothing.  However, when every single post you make (and they're frequent for some people) is the same repeated whining, droning on endlessly, it becomes more than "expressing his hope that it might return to its former value of entertainment". It's childish whining, it's annoying, and it's time for that poster to either STFU or quit coming here.

And if you find that insulting, obliquely or otherwise, so be it.

And just for the record, I didn't see anything insulting in MPS's post either.

  • My post was actually a honest question... There are so many posters here who continually whine about every little thing. And the question that always comes to my mind is "Why don't they just stop coming here if it so bad?".

If I didn't like a site, or was so annoyed, I would just stop going. So I am curious.

Seemed like a good thread to ask that question on, but Nether is just another poster here who has to get his feathers ruffled at anything that doesn't consist of "M$ sucks!" or something equally as vacuous.

  • It's not so much that the content of the site itself or the quality thereof has changed, but that as of late I seem to see a lot more bickering and negativity in the forums. Almost anything that gets posted in the sidebar wtf section becomes the target of some sort of harsh criticism and threads quickly degrade into unrelated banter. I think people are starting to post scornfully around here, and I'm not sure why. Maybe we're all just a bit too high up on our soapboxes (myself included).

Maybe we can use it to search for the source of the problem.

You better start copying and pasting now if we are going to find the problem this year...

The SE's are working on it right now. The document goes out for baselining after the Q2 release. Wait, the projects been put on hold, seems the testers can't figure out how to use SSDS...

Fear not, for I have returned.

That won't improve anybody else's comments in the forum, but at least you may bask in the glory that is me, by reading my fantastic insights and unassailable logic.

That's not really unique to the sidebar.  Just read through any of the posts about the comic.

I recall one where the ridicule of the OP became one of the best threads on the site.

I recall one that resulted in no negativity.

And those are just off the top of my head.

Also, I am intrigued as to why you continue to come to the forum.  I remember certain threads that got to a point where I couldn't read them anymore.  If the majority of threads became like that, I would probably quit coming to the forums altogether.

All that aside, the comic was funny.   You've made a statement creatively rather than just offhandedly saying "The forums suck.  All of you deserve mugs!"

It definitely was. It even matched the idea of the original version of it.

If by "idea" you mean "RAGGGH TIM BUCKLEY HATE ENCYCLOPEDIA DRAMATICA AND EVERYONE ELSE WHO MAKE FUN OF ME RAAAAAGH". ( -- the internet minus his forums)

No, I think the comic is now about 100 times funnier.

  • Has anybody ever seen cadsucks.com? I don't quite get what the purpose is, but I liked this one. (And this one if you're a comics nerd.)

See, that's better. Some thoughtful discourse and commentary. We probably come here for the same reasons... My job continually makes me ask why the hell i didn't just remain in the ivory tower as I am assailed by WTFery on all sides. I visit the daily wtf for reassurance... A feeling that I'm not alone on the treacherous seas of IT that swallow men's souls. I'd say that two or three threads per day make it worthwhile for me to visit the site, but sometimes my one hour lunch break is consumed (at least partially) by getting tripped up on some pointless bickering in a thread. I, for one, am not going to bother arguing over trite subjects and beating things to death anymore. I have better things to do with my lunch break, like play chess or read a book or something.

Case in point. The kind of sardonic pessimism that runs rampant on forums, IRC, and everywhere else on the internet that makes my surprisingly good cafeteria food taste a little less satisfying and reduces the glorious break between conference calls to flame wars. But, let's not get started on something like that here. Just saying...

That's awesome. One thing that does bother me about CAD is the blatant use of Comic Sans. Of course, what other font be more appropriate for webcomics drawn on a computer. If I were to make one, which I've considered doing at times, I'd probably just write in the text too. Unfortunately, XKCD has already been done. I imagine any ideas I might come up with will appear on there as soon as I get around to drawing them or putting them up.

You luddite. That's not Comic Sans in the balloons, you luddite.

Next thing you're going to tell me you can't distinguish between Times en Georgia.

    Luddite, you.

    PS.
I now enjoy both CADsucks and CAD. But, erm, PBF is pretty much inimitible, so don't even try.
