LOL...One of us!

It's almost like Poe's law is real...
-
Yeah, most likely. It seems like a "reasonable" thing to do. I mean...in general, if you don't know what you're getting into.
EDIT: Motherfucker...you ninja edited your post. Now my post makes no sense.

Zed Shaw gets in on trolling @sam, and links to a page of his with this:
TAKE SHIT OUT OF COOKIES, PLEASE ASSHOLES.
FB: βSir, that is not being constructive.β
Z: βOh you want constructive:βUSE MORE SUGAR INSTEAD OF SHIT, WEIRD LOSER MORON
It seems somehow familiar.

Guess what happens when you keep clicking "Post" when the site is read-only?

Free code? You're getting paid to write it! What kind of an excuse is this?
-
"@samsaffron @JakubJirutka programmers should not have feelings that is a liability"
Yes using punctuation is also a liability isn't it
-
I really dont know what you mean I talk without punctuation all the time also I find it really hard to talk like this irl because apparently you need to breathe or something at least thats what a friend of mine told me when I said I talk like this all the time then I passed out Im not sure what that has to do with this though haha I dont even know what Im saying any more
-
The lack of oxygen that results from speaking in that manner really explains a lot about Discourse.

EDIT: Updated my twitter wallpaper or whatever.
-
Oh man, he made him feel bad on Twitter. I mean, it's like... he hurt him!
I'm going in to protect Sam, no one should make people feel bad, especially on the Internet. This shit ain't right!
-
If only they used a tool to have a civilized discussion! That way nobody would ever get hurt (because Jeff bans people before that happens)
-
Discourse can be: a forum (?), a bug tracker, a battery draining tool, twitter, 9 gag, etc. The list keeps on growing!
Don't forget: Browser benchmark!
-
-
Anyone knows what this is about?
-
Did @sam make a "let me assure you it's no laughing matter" joke?
-
Not exactly, but I found this from last week:
-
Love the wallpaper - very descriptive :)
-
Jeff can ban people on Twitter now?
-
I would hope that Sam feels bad all the fucking time. I mean, his legacy to the world is this fucking broken forum.
-
Free code? You're getting paid to write it! What kind of an excuse is this?
Open source is nothing but an excuse for double-talk and hypocrisy. You're 100% right, Sam got paid to write this shitty code, it wasn't a volunteer effort on his part, and he's a complete asshole trying to score points in a debate by lying about that.
I got mad so I posted these:
-
There's no history so probably a reply to something Sam deleted afterwards. Or perhaps a reply to a PM that zedshaw wanted to make public, but usually you'd put a period on that so everybody sees it and not just Sam.
-

it's possible that @sam was talking free as in "we're not charging you for the code" not as in "i didn't get paid for this code"
those are both valid uses of the word free but very different interpretations.
but then i didn't actually follow the tweets because twitter is worse than the youtube comments section so i may be talking out of my tailhole
-

How would that make a difference if he were?
If EA releases a game demo, and it's shitty, are they ok bitching about it on Twitter saying, "you can't call it shitty because you can play the demo for free!" Any normal person would say: no. The guy giving that criticism is perfectly justified in doing so.
If you don't want to be criticized for producing shitty products, there's really only one solution: don't produce shitty products.
Face it: Sam and Atwood and the Discourse goons here are just using "open source" as an excuse to be able to be snide assholes and say stuff like, "you're an idiot if you can't figure out how to write a plugin, it's open source" or "pull requests welcome!" or whatever shitty thing open source people get away with saying all the time.
How does the Discourse project use open source?
Open = we delete all criticism (and preemptively delete all people who may sometime in the future be critical)
Source = a mess of spaghetti with 573 dependencies written in like 6 different languages, none of which have decent developer tools, and all balled-up into a packaging system that doesn't even run right on the most popular OS in the world
WOW! SO OPEN SOURCE OF THEM, GUYZ!
-
How would that make a difference if he were?
well in one the fact that sam did or did not get paid for writing the code is relevant, in the other it's not relevant.
.... that's about the only difference.
-
well in one the fact that sam did or did not get paid for writing the code is relevant, in the other it's not relevant.
Look, I'm being generous saying it's even POSSIBLE that it's relevant.
All that matters is this: it's a shitty product. It has Sam's name on it.
That's all it takes to be able to criticize Sam for it. "It's a shitty movie, it has Tom Hanks' name on it" is all it takes to be able to criticize Tom Hanks for it. "It's a shitty album, it has Nickelback's name on it" is all it takes to be able to criticize Nickelback.
I'll throw a bone to him if he had actually been a volunteer, maybe. MAYBE. MAAAAAYBE.
But that's not the case here.
I repeat once again: if you don't want to be criticized for a shitty product, don't release it under your own name. Use a pen name, or alias, or release it anonymously, or ACTUALLY MAKE THE PRODUCT NOT-SHITTY IN THE FIRST PLACE-- all valid alternatives.
The main reason I posted that is because I hate blatant liars.
-
"It's a shitty movie, it has Tom Hanks' name on it"
Don't tell me there's no manual. It's called the Constitution of the United States!
-
I repeat once again: if you don't want to be criticized for a shitty product, don't release it under your own name.
now that i read the tweets again it reads to me more that @sam is complaining to @JakubJirutka that he's doing work to get disccourse working for his use case, complaining that it's crap, and not contributing anything towards making it better.
honestly i think both of them are behaving unprofessionally in that exchange and that's exactly why i stay away from twitter...
-
One of those two parties is correct. (Hint: it's the one who thinks Discourse is shitty.) The other is a whiny baby-man who won't accept responsibility for his own shitty creation.
-

!!! Sam is the one being paid to write it, and he's complaining that someone else won't contribute to it for free? Fuck me, that's just wrong.

hey, i said i thought they both were acting unprofessionally!

I really didn't need to know where the free cookies came from.
But it does explain a lot.

-

You are a very wise Fox...
-
Damn, where has that article been all my life?!
-
hey, i said i thought they both were acting unprofessionally!
They are. The one who isn't @sam isn't expecting to be paid for it. That's the very epitome of unprofessional.
-
Twitter = soapbox for twits.
Time for this again.http://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t231/Fred_Blogs/tweeeeet.jpg
-
it's possible that @sam was talking free as in "we're not charging you for the code" not as in "i didn't get paid for this code"
Yes, that's how I interpreted it which is why I called it a bad excuse, not an outright lie.
@blakeyrat already pretty much explained why it is such a shitty excuse. One thing I don't think he sufficiently explained though is just how much of an asshole sam is in this situation because he's basically telling @JakubJirutka to do his work for him. For free!
(Whoops, I now see that @NedFodder already did. Welp, that's what I get for quickly skipping through this thread...)
Now, unlike blakey I don't have a seething hatred for open sauce. It's my favorite kind of sauce. The problem is that it is shit like this that gives it a bad name. Say what you will about Linus but this is something that would not fly under his watch.
-
There is absolutely no valid reason to be offending people on the internet. That guy didn't help anyone with his ramblings.

Yes, I'm sure that was Sam's intended meaning for "free", However, it changes nothing.Giving something away for free doesn't make it OK for the product to be crap. And, if you got paid to write the code, it's your responsibility to fix it, not mine. Free is irrelevant.
-
Which fits perfectly well with being trolled by Zed Shaw :)
-

Well, he was working on an implementation and had to weed through their code, so he had a valid reason to point out it's shit.
While I agree that he could've been more polite, I also think that reacting emotionally to some shit some twat has posted on shitter isn't something one should do.
Internet isn't a safe space, nor should it be.
Haters gonna hate and all that...
