Problem? Just disable security! Thanks!
-
So, I'm having a network share issue involving broken network shares because "the account is not authorized to log in from this station."
Google that message, and apparently the popular "fix" is to disable SMB signing.
Quote:
Hi,
It sounds like a SMB Signing issue. Please made this change in the registry to troubleshoot this problem.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\lanmanworkstation\parameters
enablesecuritysignature [REG_DWORD] = 0x0
For more information about SMB Signing:
Overview of Server Message Block signing
Hope it helps.
Emphasis mine.
Read the rest of that thread, and all the posts are "Oh, thanks, that fixed my issue!" posts.
No kidding it "fixed" it, it disabled the SMB signing. That's not a fix, it's a workaround because your config is broken.
But, whatever, should I even expect anything different?

Just pry off the "7" key.

Slightly more usefull: remove keyboard install onscreen keyboard.

The point is not engineering, it's demoralization. And avoidance of future service calls. Better solution:
Apologize for loss of service due to failed keyboard. Take broken keyboard away to be fixed "in a couple of weeks." Apologize for delay. Helpfully provide loaner keyboard on which E sticks. Depart quickly before user discovers this.

is selinux really worth the effort of keeping it enabled?

It sounds like people advise Linux users who have problem to run "rm -rf /" to solve the problem, or the tech staff in one of the TDWTF article to asked the customer to pack the computer and send it back.
-
Yes. At least it's known to be good to keep your box from infected by Java / Flash based vulnerability via Chrome, or at least it's said to be so in another Linux forum when discussing the CrytoLocker like ransomeware for Linux.

A guy rings tech support to report that his computer is faulty.
Tech: "What's the problems?"
LUser: "There is smoke coming out of the power supply."
Tech: "You'll need a new power supply."
LUser: "No I don't! I just need to change the startup files."
Tech: "Sir, the power supply is faulty. You'll need to replace it."
LUser: "No way! Someone told me that I just needed to change the startup and it will fix the problem! All I need is for you to tell me the command."10 minutes later, the LUser is still adamant that they are right. The Tech is frustrated and fed up.
Tech: "Sorry, Sir. We don't normally tell our customers this, but there is an undocumented DOS command that will fix the problem."
LUser: "I knew it!"
Tech: "Just add the line LOAD NOSMOKE.COM at the end of the CONFIG.SYS. Let me know how it goes."10 minutes later.
LUser: "It didn't work. The power supply is still smoking."
Tech: "Well, what version of DOS are you using?"
LUser: "MS-DOS 6.22."
Tech: "That's your problem there. That version of DOS didn't come with NOSMOKE. Contact Microsoft and ask them for a patch that will give you the file. Let me know how it goes."1 hour later.
LUser: "I need a new power supply."
Tech: "How did you come to that conclusion?"
LUser: "Well, I rang Microsoft and told him all about what you said, and he started asking questions about the make of power supply."
Tech: "Then what did he say?"
LUser: "He told me that my power supply isn't compatible with NOSMOKE."I found it on http://www.std.com/obi/Nerd.Humor/NOSMOKE.COM

Servers: Yes, very very much so. Anybody who tells you otherwise is lazy or ignorant.
Single-user machines: Probably not, but YMMV.

.... i must be tired....
i red that as

I was pretty sure that's a variant of Arch Linux with updates set to install without ever asking the user. That way, each morning you can have a "FUCK!" moment because something broke for free!

Bonus points if they don't have a touchscreen.

OSK can be used with the mouse... It is not easy but can be done. So just to give them a way to work but RSI the shit out of them. This is probably more for the evil ideas thread.

Is that a distro especially made for Teledildonics?
no. it's a distro especially made to ENJOY being used for Teledildonics.

ENJOY being used
So no Linux then?
no, you misunderstand.
the distro is intended to enjoy being used, if the end user also enjoys it this is a happy bonus.

This reminds me of an issue that I've encountered several times since I was a wee lad back in high school, particularly when installing computer games.
Problem: Installation crashes suddenly, refuses to progress, or fails to even open. "Installation" may also refer to automatic required update checks in the program launcher.
Solution: Disable User Account Control.
Resolved: FIXED

Letting them use the mouse is all well and good, but remember to remap the left mouse button to "ALT" and the right mouse button to "SPACE" first.
If they don't like that they can just go into the control panel to reset it.

So darkstar is something like Lexx? Maybe I should try it then

How to tell a person has not seen Dark Star.
I never saw it either; I read the novelization, though.
My favorite character is the bomb, so eager to blow something up. The philosophical argument was a nice try, but the conclusion wasn't good. ("Let there be light.")
