Waiting room TV

  • As it happens, I've been having to spend some time in a waiting room where there is a TV screen where they display some news, slideshow-style.

    Up until recently, the screen had white text displayed in the left 2 fifths, with the remaining 3 fifths showed a nice black rectangle (no screenshots, sorry).

    Looks like they "fixed" it though. Now the right part of the screen shows Euronews (without sound or subtitles), while the left part is showing news from some national source, as it was before.

    This means now and then there are some nice combinations, like:

    • "European Commission launches campaign against poverty" while showing images of people in casinos and buying lottery tickets;
    • Something about the Belgian government while showing some kid herding goats;
    • "National football coach says team needs more motivation" while showing a guy with what I think was an AK-47.

    Would have been even more appropriate if it was herding cats. The Belgian government or lack thereof is my daily pasttime, better than any sitcom!

  • I'm trying hard to resist quoting silly Internet catchphrases like "pics or it didn't happen", but I assume you'll be bringing your camera next time?

    Sounds like Iraq in the good old days.

  •  TRWTF is waiting room TVs...

    Can't people, you know, "read" ?

    In the very few places where there isn't any public screen, I'm always amused at the screen-addicted* people's panic : QUICK ! MY IPHONE ! OO'

    * read : almost everyone less than 40 years old.

  • It's a relatively big waiting room in a hospital. Most of the people there are old and I assume their eyes aren't as good as they used to be.

    There is a pile of 10 to 20 magazines hidden in a corner behind a pillar. Some of the people who manage to find them eventually read them.

    I don't know how recent they are, but some of them have pages torn away (presumably those with crossword and sudoku puzzles), and others still are just the cover because the rest has misteriously disappeared.

  • I thought about something *readable*.

    Stupid torn magazines full of ads don't fall into the category.

    Is a pocket book or newspaper too heavy to carry ?

  • ::rolls die::

    You are able to carry a pocket book or newspaper.

    You hear a faint hissing down from the pile of magazines hidden in the corner behind the north pillar.  Behind the south pillar, a child is playing with some electronic gadget.

    A new patron enters the waiting room. You notice the room begins to smell pungently of old-person-perfume and failed kidneys. Roll for damage.

  • +5 ENDURANCE
    DR 15

    > ROLL

    no damage

    > go south

  • You go south towards the pillar.  The child does not acknowledge your presence.  You can see the electronic gadget is in fact a modern smart phone, and that he is browsing its easily-accessible vendor-supplied online store.  He purchases several Atari-era game clones for $10 each.

    > LOOK

    In front of you is the child playing a tetris clone on a smart phone.

    To your left is a row of waiting room chairs, sparely populated with patrons, each gazing up with mouth half-opened staring at the TV.

    To your right is a door with the word EXIT labeled at its top in red.

    Behind you is the north pillar. You continue to hear a faint hissing sound.

    > LOOK TV

    The TV shows two news programs, side by side.  On the left side is a conservative commentator describing the recent US mid-term election as a "bloodbath" and a "slaughter".  The right shows news regarding the US-led wars in the Mideast.

    > TURN OFF LIGHTS.

    The room is now only illuminated by the faint flickering of the television screen.

    > TURN OFF TELEVISION.

    You are likely to be eaten by a grue.

     The grue draws near! FIGHT? MAGICKS? ITEM? RUN?

    >CAST FIRAGALAGARAMUHLAMUHDINGDONG

     I'm sorry, I don't know how to cast "firagalagaramuhlamuhdingdong". Did you mean to "load all torpedo mk7"?
