I wrote this about two weeks ago, but I never got to post it:
OK, regarding my disk space usage. I had accidently created a 9.5GB VM snapshot inside `C:\Users\Zecc\VirtualBox VMs\Windows 10\Snapshots` before moving the snapshots location to another partition. Mea culpa.
Still, that was dated from September. Doesn't explain the latest space shrinkage. That honour goes to the creeping growth of:
- the files in
C:\Windows\Logs\CBS(3GB); - the
cab_[0-9]{4}-[0-9]files insideC:\Windows\Temp(17 × 123.9 MB = 2GB); - the files inside
C:\Windows\Installer(1.9GB. Dated between yesterday and five years ago); - the contents of
C:\ProgramData\Package Cache(1.1GB); C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\DataStore\DataStore.edb; (848MB);- a couple of subdirectories of
C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Microsoft Antimalware(about 0.5GB)
WinDirStat was really useful. Thanks for the link @Jaloopa.
While I didn't deal with all those directories back then, my disk space was well over 10 GB. That was fine, so I didn't look more into it.
Since then I've booted Windows... twice? Maybe three times? I didn't check what disk space I had yesterday.
Now today I'm upgrading LibreOffice on this machine and I get this:
There are several reasons why it makes me mad:
- They couldn't localize the Retry button properly;
- I shouldn't even be having this problem because:
- The webpage I downloaded the installer from was in English. My OS is in English. Why is the installer in Portuguese with no option to choose a different language?
- I told it to install to D:. Why is it trying to put 222 MB in C:? (the installer was downloaded to D: and is only 210MB, FWIW)
- And of course: Out of disk space again?? ARGHGRRGHGAH
I ran Disk Cleanup.
Disk space went **down** from 182MB to 9,53 MB.

I'm running WinDirStat again. I'm sure part of it is the fault of yesterday's system updates.
Edit: Oh, it's pagefile.sys. I'm going to have to look for another target.

I think that strategy seems to be working
A useful tool is Treesize the free version is adequate for investigating disk usage in a "friendly" file explore way.
Another tip is to zap your microsoft search / indexer. The "database" grows into 10's of GB. A good start is here. Although it is about Windows 8 and I have no idea how (if) it applies to Windows 10.

So Windows Installer caches many MSI installs on %systemroot%\Installer. This facilitates Windows Installer's repair and customize functionalities. Sometimes it only tries to cache things like icons there if the install doesn't support repair or customize. That's probably why you were getting the "out of space" error on C:.
Also, don't delete it it (or anything in it) manually; you'll just bork everything.

The Windows version of LibreOffice comes bundled as a self-extracting archive that unpacks a folder full of installers and crap into %TEMP% by default. OpenOffice used to give you the option of where to unpack those installation files to but LibreOffice doesn't, because Grumpy Cat I guess. You can unpack it yourself to wherever you like using 7-Zip. After you've run setup.exe from inside the unpacked folder and installation is complete, you don't need that folder any more.
On WinDirStat: useful tool, but fugly to look at. I like the last free version of SpaceMonger a lot better.

Indeed it does. But once you actually want to use the thing to figure out which folders are eating all your space, it's way, way easier to read than WinDirStat's bizarro gradient shadings.

I also see a bunch of old (as in 2009 old)nv_disp*directories insideC:\Windows\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository, but I'll leave them for now.I've moved some large media files, as well as some directories containing documentation, to another partition because they were preventing me from getting a better view of the tree.
pagefile.sysand AVDs I couldn't be bothered to move still do. I wish there was a way to tell WinDirStat to ignore certain files or directories.Bottom line is my disk space is over 10GB again.
If push comes to shove I've still got a 1.3GB
C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log.
That's right, those 3GB of logs I deleted above didn't include the most recent file.

I ran Disk Cleanup.
I unknowingly had a corrupted file system and disk cleanup completely screwed my system. Always run disk check and sfc FIRST.

Except that there are differences between GPLv2 and GPLv3.
For example, nVidia's current Linux practice of making an open source Linux kernel module that talks to a binary driver is allowed under GPLv2 and explicitly banned under GPLv3.

You know I think the problem a lot of people have with Windows is they tinker with shit for no good reason, then shit breaks, then they blame Windows instead of their tinkering. Like... why the fuck would you even do something like this? To "prevent its crap from growing uncontrollably?" That's a conspiracy theory! Not a danger!
(Note that when these same people use a Linux OS and tinker, they blame the tinkering for the problems and not the Linux OS. Figure that one out.)
Just use Windows they way Microsoft intended you to use it, it's fine. It'll work for decades with no problems. Put in the disk, hit "next next next", it all fucking works!

Yes, I do know you think the problem is that.But here's the thing: I did not "tinker with shit". I partioned my hard-drive the way I saw fit:
- one partition exclusively used by Windows;
- another partition used exclusively by Linux, the same size as the first one;
- a small (2GB) partition for Linux swap;
- a third used for data that is either common to both platforms (media, virtual disks, source code) or Windows-only. Most of my Windows programs are installed there, including notably: Steam games, Android Studio and Visual Studio.
The Windows partition is the only one getting its disk space reduced close to zero, even though I use Linux most of the time (like, 5 times more frequently); and even though I install all Linux programs on the Linux partition, namely its own version of Android Studio and its AVD images, MonoDevelop, QtCreator, nodejs, GIMP, Inkscape, Sublime Text, etc. while I install their Windows counterparts to the supposedly-data-only partition..
Disclaimer: *some* Windows programs are installed in C:: TortoiseHg, GIMP, TreeSheets (the whole almost 6MB of it), VLC, Blender... Firefox is there and so is Chrome (`C:\Program Files (x86)\Google\Update\Install` could use some scrubbing, although at less than 90MB it seems puny).Program FilesandProgram Files (x86)together total 10.7 GB.I also have a directory with small portable games I haven't played in years occupying 300 MB and

AT NO POINT DID I SPECIFICALLY BLAME WINDOWS THE OS FOR BEING THE SOLE RESPONSIBLE OF MY DISAPPEARING DISK SPACE. (although it seems in great measure to be, quite frankly, it's not the sole responsible. I blame there being lots of programs not using Temp as they're supposed to)Look, there's no conspiracy theory. Crap grows in any OS. It may be logs, it may be left over files from uninstalled programs, it may be left over temporary files from programs I run, it may even be files I myself created and forgot to delete in due time.
The point of partitioning is: by keeping different stuff in different partitions I can get a better idea at a glance of where the drive space is going and react to it. Plus, when time comes to throw away an OS, most of my data will be safe elsewhere.

Nah, it's the other way around. I blame Linux problems for all the tinkering I have to do.In Windows stuff just works, in Linux I've got to tinker until it does.
I like Windows (7) and Linux equally. I'd like Windows better if the little issues I have with its user interface and update experience were fixed and if this ever-shrinking disk space phenomenon didn't exist.
