Downloading MS SQL Server
-
I've tried filling out the form it gives in several ways, but every time I get this:
Is there some other way I'm supposed to download SQL server for use in a local testing aspx thing?
-
-
Even easier: http://downloadsqlserverexpress.com/
-
I've never seen a SQL Server Express download page with a form. How'd you get there?

Are you even surprised? I can't fucking update my Windows 10 box, I get some fucking 0xSomeNumberError and Windows Update's been eating ~20% of my CPU for the past 3 days without downloading/installing anything. Add VS2015 to the list and what you get is: this shit ain't working.
I clicked on help link for "defer updates" option in Settings and all I got was a bing search results for some fucking hard coded search
germterm. This shit ain't working, I miss my win7/VS2013 conbo. But it looked worse.

It did that on my desktop too.
I ended up stopping the service, then a day or so later restarted and told it to update. Then it tried, failed, required some fixing when it hung at "Restarting" and finally worked the 3rd time.It did, however, work perfectly on my laptop.

I hate how companies always have different "sub-websites" leading to the same products but in slightly different (or in this case, completely different) ways.
One product, one URL.

So I was installing the server while playing some GW2, and it spawned a bunch of command prompt windows (at least I assume that's what the black rectangles appearing and disappearing were).
Imagine the top left quarter being obscured by a black rectangle and the game losing focus until you click on it. Not fun during a meta-event where we fight an elder dragon.
-
I suggest you don't install new software on your weapons when you're about to fight a dragon with it.
-
Have not experience that on my Surface Pro 3 + Win10 + VS2015 box. Maybe something you've installed broke the installer database?
-
"SQL Server Express download" takes you directly to this page: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=42299
JUST SAYIN'

SQL Server has the universe's worst installer, you've seen people complain about that like 4 dozen times here. Don't play stupid.

We are happy to finally see @blakeyrat admit something from Microsoft is bad. We'll give you a like to increase your Discourse gamification score as a reward.

You either have the world's shortest memory or you ain't read shit that I typed.
Bad products I say are bad. Good products I say are good. It doesn't matter what companies are responsible.

Our memory does suck, but you said this last time we asked:
Yes. Or maybe no. Your double-negative is confusing me.

For me, it happens on laptop. I'll have to try that, thanks.
I'm just tired of having to fight with OS every day. I just wish I could just permanently switch to Linux.

Well, all I meant was that VS 2015 is buggy.
What really grinds my gears about this Windows update thing is, they've thrown out the old and broken (but less) applet and replaced it with this awful oversimplified tablet-y thingy, so that now you can't see what's going on. Don't get me wrong, I like simple things, I own an iPhone for god sakes, but they gave to fucking WORK, otherwise they turn into impossible to troubleshoot nuisances.
-
You can see the real one in control panel..
-
Nope. You just be using the Sane Edition or something. Pro doesn't have that.

No, you didn't. Liar!

Seems you are right...

There used to be a regedit tweak that could bring it back, but it was disabled around the launch date, I think. Now it's just a metro update applet with their fucking narrow world-view.

Try booting from a live CD, deleting the C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution and C:\Windows\System32\Catroot2 folders, then booting back into Windows.

I suggest Microsoft knows better than you do when it's the right time to install updates on your computer.
-
I managed to find some script that reset Windows update state, then a reboot helped. But thanks anyway.

reminds me of ...

Try booting from a live CD, deleting the C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution and C:\Windows\System32\Catroot2 folders, then booting back into Windows.
You can do it from within Windows if you stop the Windows Update, BITS and CryptSvc services before deleting the files, then reenable the services and reboot.
This is what sorted my problem eventually.
-
Yeah, that works most of the time. Sometimes Windows cracks the sads about removing those folders even after the services have stopped, and you have to fight with it before it gives in. Live CD works first time every time, and since you have to reboot anyway, it's not even that much slower.
