Another small topic! This time ash vs the evil dead!

Continuing the discussion from whats the problem with small topics? (redux squared):

Surely not!and how did that work out for us?
I think @aliceif and I got to like 20-something topics. Then people got annoyed.

I watched the trilogy before watching the tv series. I have the feeling that a lot of people haven't seen the movies but have an expectation of what it should be about. The series lives up to this expectation. I feel Army of Darkness didn't.
Any thoughts?
-
I love AoD in its own right. It's fun, it's enjoyable, it's something that's more watchable in any setting than ED / ED II since there's less gore. And it seems that the show is taking some ideas from it - tell me that the doll fight wasn't a ripoff of that fight with mini-Ashes... Ashen... Ashii?
Only saw ep. 1 of the show, looks promising. Campbell is his awesome self, other characters are not too grating so far and the humour seems to be there.
The lightbulb gag was a bit too much for me, though. Come on guys, it's Evil Dead, it's not Looney Toons!
-
I feel Army of Darkness didn't.
That movie definitely stood out. Not in a bad way, but it was cool to have a change of pace. And it was so good, too.
I haven't watched the show yet. I suspect I'm going to have to wait for it to show up on Amazon. But I have plenty of stuff to watch right now and not enough time to watch it.
-
Speaking of the movies - is the show the continuation of the original? Ignoring the time vortex thing, wasn't ED II just Ash and his girlfriend? He distinctly says "friends" in the first episode, which makes me think it's ignoring everything but the original.
-
-
The time vortex thing is still in effect. It's like 20 years later and he's still a stock boy. He was just getting high one night and started read the Necronomicon and unleashed hell again.
That movie definitely stood out. Not in a bad way, but it was cool to have a change of pace. And it was so good, too.
I found it tiresome about mid way through. I always imagined it been something akin to dawn of the dead but didn't take itself too serious. The series hits all the right buttons for me so far. Over the top gore splattered everywhere. Bad jokes and one liners. Just about the right amount of idiocy. It's perfect lazy Sunday afternoon fodder.
-

I don't see how that proves anything.
He was just getting high one night and started read the Necronomicon and unleashed hell again.
Yes, I got that one. Did he take the Necronomicon with him in AoD, though? I forget.
Also, I prefer the "I slept too long!" ending. I know that my preference makes no difference, but just sayin'.
-
Did he take the Necronomicon with him in AoD, though?
No. It was just him and his car and stuff. He had to quest to retrieve it back in medieval Southern California.

I only ever saw the first movie, but I thought the show stood on it's own so far, having seen both episodes. I think it probably gave you enough history to go on.
Reboot did an episode with a parody of the movie.
-
I feel Army of Darkness didn't.
Army of Darkness is the best movie and you're an idiot.
But the thing is, there already was a Evil Dead TV series, two of them actually: both Hercules: The Legendary Journey and Xena: Warrior Princess borrow heavily from everything about Evil Dead except the inclusion of zombies.
-
Army of Darkness is the best movie and you're an idiot.
In the series or ever? Because that's fightin' words if you mean "ever".
-
Ever.
Also Bruce Campbell was best in Brisco County, Jr. Also that movie about the mummy and elvis in the retirement home, I can't remember the name of it.
Brisco County Jr., now that's a show that REALLY deserved better. The stupid network got their season run with a clean wrapped-up storyline, then moronically ordered like 4 more episodes. Uh!? So the poor writers had to pull 4 episodes out of their ass, and the network guaranteed when it came to renewal decision time, people only remembered the 4 ass-pull episodes and not the amazingly awesome episodes that preceded them. Boom, awesome show cancelled.
Stupid network. (I think it was Fox, right? Stupid Fox.)

Ever.
Bah! The one-liner count is impressive, but it can't beat Brian Blessed shouting "DIIIIVEEE" in the middle of battle between bird-people and a spaceship with Queen blaring in the background! Also, James Bond infiltrating the fortress of Emperor of the Universe.
Boom, awesome show cancelled.
Stupid network. (I think it was Fox, right? Stupid Fox.)
That's kinda their SOP when it comes to good shows, is it not?

I just wasn't over whelmed. One and Two were brillant shit happends in the woods movies but AoD always felt like it carrying on a joke too long. I was expecting more shotguns and chainsaws.Brisco County, Jr.
Fucking hell I remember that. It was awesome and Irish TV Execs been the retards they were didn't show the second half of the season. Why I hear you ask. Because they're retards. The entire country is a cesspit of retards. Also, I prefer the "I slept too long!" ending. I know that my preference makes no difference, but just sayin'.
I thought that ending was more fitting. Ash been the jackass that he was would of drank 7 instead of 6 drops.Bah! The one-liner count is impressive, but it can't beat Brian Blessed shouting "DIIIIVEEE" in the middle of battle between bird-people and a spaceship with Queen blaring in the background! Also, James Bond infiltrating the fortress of Emperor of the Universe.
Fucking hell what is that? I want in!
-

Yeah, Fox pulls that shit all the time. Take Firefly for example. They're given 14 episodes, don't air three of them, air the rest out of order (You want that to be the pilot? Nah, let's put that at the end of the season.), regularly skip the show for a sports broadcast (Yay for the Friday night death slot!), advertise the show poorly (Basically, the original ads didn't attract people who would have liked the show and attracted people who didn't like the show.), and then cancel because it has "poor ratings".

By that same token he would misspeak the words again as well.

Right!
That movie rocked.
Fucking hell I remember that.
I have the DVD set and I listened to the commentaries, and it was tragic because it was 100% clear beyond belief that everybody involved in the production REALLY believed in it and wanted it to succeed. It was also completely unlike ANYTHING on TV at the time.
Sure there were a couple bum episodes and a lot of places they could have badly used more budget on effects*, but all-in-all, it was an excellent season of television.
Also: Comet the Wonder Horse was the BEST. Kind of like the Rex The Wonder Dog comic book's schtick (in fact now that I think about it it was probably a direct riff on that) but translated to a horse and TV.
*) The DVD commentary has a great story about arguing for more budget on the episode with the desert bandits who are also pirates-- they originally wanted a full-size (like 45'+) pirate ship on wagon wheels, and had to keep negotiating down until they ended up with a standard prop Conestoga wagon with a sail on top. One of the producers drew up a quick cartoon with the original concept labeled "film budget" and what they ended up with labeled "TV budget".

Except Firefly sucked. It deserved to be cancelled. I'm sorry but it's true.

Plot Twist: @blakeyrat has Firefly on blu-ray and binge watches it at least once a month.
-
Except Firefly sucked
I borrowed the DVDs off a friend after being told for years that it was awesome and I had to watch it. It was OK. If I hadn't had it hyped up I would probably have quite liked it, but it could never live up to the legions of geeks telling me I would literally cream my pants at how good it was.
-
Right. I've seen like 3 episodes and the Serenity movie and it's like. Shrug. I guess I'd rather watch it than, say, The Starlost? But that's about all I can say for it. BTW: Whedon fans do that with Buffy the Vampire Slayer, also. Another show which is "ok I guess."
The movie was better than the series (except the quirk that it required a LOT of knowledge from the series to understand), they should have just made a couple movies instead of wasting time dealing with Fox's moron TV execs.
-
People like different stuff.
-
Which is fine; but these people don't say, "I like Firefly", they say "Firefly is BEST TV EVER everybody at Fox is MORON for hating it if you don't like Firefly YOU ARE HITLER etc".
I mean, I like the musical "The Apple" but I'd never suggest anybody else watch it. The movie sucks. I just think it's really unintentionally funny.

I tend to agree with Blakey. It was an interesting universe, had interesting characters and Josh Cuntyface still managed to take the most boring sliver of his universe and everyone still creamed themselves. Watched once but would not watch again.I mean, I like the musical "The Apple" but I'd never suggest anybody else watch it. The movie sucks. I just think it's really unintentionally funny.
You're a fucking monster and should die.On another note Bruce Campbell was in Fargo last night and was awesome. If he wasn't fictional and actually said anything relevant I would of voted for him.

Back on topic. This week's Ash was 27 shades of awesome. The demon was cool. Lucy Lawless was wearing awesome boots. Instead of drinking 7 gallons of corn syrup with red dye Ash got to swallow someone's drool.
I was a little annoyed with friends are for realies at the end but all in all 7 gallons of red corn syrup in a five gallon bottle.
-
Things are getting more sinister now! Lucy Lawless might be lying about her real identity. One of the scooby gang is haunted and Ash is dropping acid in other to find his spiritual centre. Less corn syrup this episode but the return of the forest wind demon was enjoyed.
Only 6 gallons of red corn syrup in a five gallon bottle this week.
-
I'm feeling kinda guilty for being behind on watching this now. I'll remedy that tonight I think.
-
The spoilers for next week's episode make it sound kind of lame, though.
-
Wait, Lucy Lawless?
... where can I view this!

Starz! (Not to be confused with Stars!).

Yay! A TV show I can't watch!
-
If you want to pay for the app, you can watch it.Oops, no, if you have cable with Starz, their app is free.Episode 1 is free on their website; I guess that's all you can see.
-
Sadly, fans of our shows and movies in other countries, other planets and distant galaxies cannot access STARZ Play. You must be in the United States or a US Territory to watch.
I agree with the rat, Yay!
