Ultra-Edit's history in the words of its founder

I have no words...

This was a simple editor to replace what is known as "NOTEPAD" in the Windows world.
This is how stars are born
We prayed about this, and we felt more and more as time progressed that we should make a change - surely God had not blessed our efforts with the editor for us just to say it's too much, but dare we take the step and make it our full time occupation?
Just ask him to pray for Discourse, problem solved I bet even @loopback0 will have nothing against it
Later that evening, an additional registration came in - that made 22. As soon as I realized this, I remembered the night before - after asking God for 20 registrations, I had said to myself (I dare not say this to God - but He knows our every thought), I should have asked for 22 as it would be twice the number of the day before. Boy - did I know now that God was in control!!!
...
Many people asked what I was going to do, had comments and opinions. With only the one product several offered a lot of doubt, but we knew the Lord's direction.this is treasure trove I have to bookmark and read carefully

so, for anyone wondering what ultraedit is, it's apparently just the Christian version of sublime, but with a bigger price tag.
-
I would like to buy this sublime!

Pray for Discourse to what? Die in a fire?
-
Well what if you could change it so it wont be using RoR and the entire crew are replaced with polite super geniuses, and the name would no longer be Discourse?

So if I could wish for Discourse to be NodeBB or Flarum?
-
You could yes! but be careful because I will mark this post to check in a few years.
Have you ever wondered why bugs are fact of life? The problem with most software and all these we see here is that nobody prays for software. Next time you get a bug because of division by zero, you can just pray and defeat math once and for all.

Don't worry, we'll import it into the new software and @Luhmann will necro it in 10 years anyway.

Success is always attributed to God, but failures never are.
I don't watch football anymore, I gave that up. I got tired of the interviews after the games, because the winning players always give credit to God, and the losers blame themselves. You know, just once I'd like to hear a player say, 'Yeah, we were in the game, until Jesus made me fumble. He hates our team.'
-
I was just thinking today about how this "praising God" thing seems to be a textbook example of cult of personality. Same as how they praise Dear Leader in North Korea whenever anything good happens.
Even if you believe in an omnipotent God, it makes no logical sense to praise him for stuff like this. Supposedly, He gave people free will so we could decide stuff on our own, and that's why bad stuff happens, so it should explain most of the good stuff too.
-
Have to say, UltraEdit is not a bad piece of kit.
-
Compared to sublime?
-
Does Sublime have a hex editor? How well does Sublime cope with enormous files (multi GB)? Because last time I used UE, it had both of those nailed on top of being a generally decent editor.
-
Read up to "God". Needless to say, I didn't get very far.
-
@Fox someone is saying something offensive about someone's beleifs here? Time for that high horse again.
@boomzilla I think I need to be jeffed!
-
I spent some of the day yesterday using the tool. I think I might actually buy it. Thank for pointing out this tool.

I am offended by your comment about my comment being offensive and it offends my beliefs.

Nah, Christianity is in the majority so it's perfectly fine. Just don't say anything about Islam, that would be gross and racist!

I tried UltraEdit a while ago. It had some impressive features, but I just couldn't find a place where it fit in my workflow.
I wasn't sure what to do. The conundrum weighted heavily on my mind during my communion. That night in bed, I prayed and asked God for help.
-- What should I do, Lord? UltraEdit is powerful, but it just feels a bit too bulky for a text editor. As an IDE, on the other hand, it misses-
-- WHAT NOW!? LOOK, I'M DEALING WITH A HUMANITARIAN CRISIS ON ZOMBLOTRON VI, CENTAURUS II IS OVERDUE FOR FLOODING AND THERE'S ANOTHER FUCKING BASTARD ON BETA PICTORIS III CLAIMING TO BE MY SON. JUST USE SUBLIME AND VISUAL STUDIO LIKE A NORMAL PERSON, AND QUIT BOTHERING ME WITH THIS SHIT!
-- The Lord hath spoken.

I use Ultraedit religiously (HA).
It's one of my favorite pieces of workflow glue. Dumb text manipulation tricks, mostly.Notepad++ gets "I need to read this text file"
VS2005 gets "I need to edit this XSD file"
VS2008 gets "I need to edit this XML file"
VS2010 gets "I need to edit this dumb legacy junk project"
VS2012 gets "I need to edit this XSLT file"
VS2013 needs a purpose or I need to uninstall it.
VS2015 is used for actual programming. In all honesty this is mostly because I'm always doing at least a few of those at one time the separation into different taskbar icon groups pleases me.

OH FUCK M NIGHT SHAMYLAN TWIST.
I won't bore you here with all the details, but I uploaded the software to CompuServe (this was around April 15th 1994), a very large online computer network and started to receive interest almost immediately. I was stunned when after just one month a large company was interested in 60 copies, and after some changes did purchase the 60 copies.
So. My team. Our ultraedit license. 60 copies. It's contained in a text file dated June 1994.
We haven't paid annual update since like 2002, so the version I use is hella crusty, but whatever.

Islam isn't a race
I expected you to be more sensitive to all things islam because of your strange unicode character formed name (بول)

I think he's just taking the piss out of it

Nice! I guess your company was the instrument of God's will.

Yeeeaaaah I have some unfortunate news about the nature of that God....

Something bad happened with that company? Was it after 2002 when they stopped updating your ultraedit license?
-
it's surprising how the smallest of details can be a part of God's much bigger plan].
Yup, he's going to kill us all, YOU MORON!

I'm not going to try to open a file that would take an hour to read off the hard drive, but here's a gigabyte of binary data:
The UI stayed responsive during the whole loading process.
