    Uh, no.  Whois works by searching what amounts to a cache of domain names on your DNS server.  GOOGLE.COM.ACQUIRED.BY.CALITEC.NET, for example, appears because CALITEC.NET has a subdomain named GOOGLE.COM

    No it doesn't. Whois works by searching the WHOIS database, which is maintained by the domain registrars and has absolutely nothing to do with DNS servers (except that the root DNS servers are populated from the same source as the WHOIS database). Completely different protocol.

    Sort of. There's no strict rule about how a WHOIS server has to interpret queries, and most do a simple substring search, so 'oogle.co' would match it too. The protocol is disgustingly simple, although the servers do interpret certain strings in special ways (ask whois.ripe.net about HELP for documentation on the most commonly used server).

  • Hmmm, I hadn't seen whois spam before. The other entries are subdomains and aren't related to YouTube at all. I'm curious as to why some whoises are returning them... The one at http://www.internic.net/whois.html only seems to list the real youtube.com.

    The site was incredibly slow back then and when I saw all those URLs and the tags in the Sidebar forums (I hadn't seen before) I really thought thedailywtf.com was being attacked.

    I just tried various queries; apparently it matches everything that is one level of a domain and not a TLD - unless your query contains a dot, in which case it matches from the left and checks that the part after the last dot is a valid TLD.

    It varies depending on which server you're talking to (not all the WHOIS servers run the same software). 



  • I'm intrigued.  I want to do this with my last company.  I know they "city.mycompany.com" for all their clients (newspapers).  I want to find out which ones they have now.  I know they used dyndns for their DNS needs.  Would a query of this database give me the cities for which he has subdomains?

    Depends on how they did it. If there's a huge number of cities, then setting up a dedicated A record for each could be a pain. Plus propagation times anytime  records are added/deleted. And also requires someone with access to the DNS server (or DNS hosting place's control panels, whatever) to make the changes.

    For one client who wanted a franchisename.companyname.com type setup for each franchise, but not have to deal with the DNS hassles, I did it by setting a wildcard dns record for their TLD, and then configured Apache to handle things properly.

     <virtualhost ip:80>
       serveralias companyname.com *.companyname.com
       etc...
    </virtualhost>

    and then a bit of PHP in the headers to check if the hostname the request was coming in on was actually a real franchise's name, and insert the appropriate details onto the pages as necessary. If the request was coming in on an invalid hostname, the user'd be redirected elsewhere (the main company site's franchise list at this time).  

    This wouldn't work too well for places that have different styles/layouts/looks for every franchise/city, but for this client, it's a pretty set template with only minimal differences between them all (a few more/less things depending on the franchise's capabilities/setup). 

    I like name-based hosting. Makes some things so much easier.

    That's definitely what we were doing at the time I worked there.  When we needed a new city (maybe two per year), I would log into dyndns and create the subdomain.

    Doing a whois doesn't come up with anything but mycompany.com now though.  Is there a special way I have to do the query?  Maybe they just changed the way they're doing it.

    Ya know, I'm not sure how you can definitively check if a zone has a wildcard set on it without being able to do a zone transfer/AXFR type lookup. You can always do a few obviously-bogus lookups (ie: screwyouandthehorseyourodeinon.companyname.com) and see if those resolve. If most/all of those resolve, then most likely it's a wildcard.

    Of course, you can't put it past a really anal admin to have gone and generated an A record for every possible hostname. I'd hate to see the bandwidth bills when that zone gets transferred to the off-site secondaries though.
