    correct?

    Okay... So.

You have a magic lantern, as soon as you touch it you know the following:

    • You have three wishes to ask of the magic lantern and it will grant them.
    • Each wish will last for twenty four (24) hours, or until your death, whichever is shorter.
    • Furthermore, the 24 hour period will be measured on the Surface of Earth pre wish, and will not be altered by any relativistic effects that may or may not apply as the result of your wish.
    • At the expiration of the wish the entire universe will be reset to exactly as it was before you made your wish
    • You will retain your memory of exactly what occurred during the time your wish was active.
    • You cannot wish to know the wishes of any prior or future owner of the magic lantern
    • After your third wish is granted the lantern will select another intelligent creature to be owned by and will grant three wishes to that creature as well
    • You may not wish for more wishes
    • You may not make any wishes that affect any of the rules on this list.
    • There are no limits on the wishes so long as they do not violate the letter or the spirit of the above rules. anything is fair game.

    What will you wish for?

    [poll]

    • What is this stupid game?!
    • You're stupid for making this game!
    • And you should feel bad for posting this shit!
    • Can i wish the genie free of the bottle?
    • I know the rules say no, but can I wish for more wishes?
    • E_MAGIC_NOT_FOUND

So all you get is memories of the "what if" situation, but due to the reset there are no other effects? Sounds like a time for knowledge based wishing to me.

of course, you do have to remember that your body also resets so if the wish has to change your mental capacity to fit the knowledge in, you change back to normal mental capacity after the wish expires...

ever tried to fit the entire library of congress on a 3.25" floppy?

  • I would probably go with "have conversations with historical figures", "know exactly what happened with/at/when..." and the big one, the meaning of it all.

Basically get the answers to all the great questions, and play Metallica to Mozart.

I wouldn't go with drugs or thrills, that's just asking for mental addiction problems down the line.

  • I survived the hour long Uno hand

I wouldn't need a wish. That already sounds perfect. A whole day to catch up on sleep and recharge my batteries? :)

FTFY. A whole day where you can do anything non-lethal-during-those-24-hours knowing that no matter what shit you put yourself through, the next day you'll just wake up in your bed as if nothing happened? What do you even need to wish for, just grab that ax already.

you can do the lethal; stuff too if you like. you'll just have a shorter wish before you're zapped back to before wish.

so if you wanted to know what it was like to undergo lethal injection (for example), this would be your chance to find out

true, but then we all do know that most of the benefit of that doctorate knowledge is the piece of paper. ;-)

  • FoxDev

For me at least my wishes would be:

    • Have synestesia
It's always fascinated me and i'd love to experience it.
    • Genderswap
For all my talk about men thinking with their dicks.... what's it like to have one?

not sure what the third one would be... probably something else experiential that i won't get a chance to experience otherwise.

  • @accalia said:

not sure what the third one would be

Could go with something useful like "able to fluently speak the following languages...", plus you can then spend the next 24 hours like @Maciejasjmj was thinking. Combo those suckers up.

  • I survived the hour long Uno hand

How are composite wishes handled in this scenario? For example, would I need to wish for both a wingsuit and the training required to use it or can I creatively combine the two? This assumes that I already used a wish that would get me to place where I could actually use one.

  • @Placeholder said:

would I need to wish for both a wingsuit and the training required to use it or can I creatively combine the two?

Well, you get three wishes, and you're technically immortal over the course, so just wish for a wingsuit three times and then well, trial and error...

  • FoxDev

    @Placeholder said:

For example, would I need to wish for both a wingsuit and the training required to use it

    that would be one wish.

go wild with the composite wishes, but if you go too wild i might decide your 24 hours starts when you start describing the wish, rather than when you finish. ;-)

  • I survived the hour long Uno hand

Whenever I get asked by someone what I would do if I could do anything and get away with it, my answer always involves some variation on stealing a fighter jet. I would then fly it around for a while until I started running out of fuel, then at the very end fly it up into the stratosphere until it stalls, eject, and wingsuit all the way back to where I started. As you can imagine, that would require a lot of composite wishes.

Your scenario is a little bit less restricted, so I'll try to come up with some better ideas first.

Question #2: If one of my wishes cannot be fulfilled due to the fundamental limits of the universe, do I get a refund?

  • @locallunatic said:

"able to fluently speak the following languages..."

    would combine well with teleportation.

also: Dr. Manhattan powers are available?

  • Well duh.

You can't benefit directly from your wish as you retain nothing. WITH ONE EXCEPTION.

You retain the knowledge. So pull a Biff Tannin (or the guys from Primer) and get some future knowledge and make yourself rich or whatever by leveraging it.

Wait a second, with the time rule, you can wish for Flash-like speeds and take your time. The 24 hours could take hundreds of years for your perception. You can easily get pretty much whatever you want after a jaunt like that, and there's no time rush. It's 24 hours in the world, but there's no rule saying it has to be 24 hours FOR YOU.

Fair enough on the for a day powers being combined, I just like the actually keeping something when you are done (which speaking languages or knowing a large but not absurd amount of information could work based on @accalia's rules).

    1. I'd wish that I was in a dwarf fortress for 24 Earth hours. That should give me about my entire life so far (approximately 21.4285714 years of Dwarf Fortress time).

The other two depend on whether I have to ask for all my wishes at once or not. (That is, whether they have to be the same 24 hours.)

    If I do:

    1. I'd wish that Dwarf Fortress was advanced to Toady One's vision for it before I was put into it. That guy has some big plans.
    2. I'd wish that Dwarf Fortress had better graphics than would be possible on today's technology.

    If I don't:

    1. I'd wish that I wasn't autistic for a day, just to see what it's like.
    2. Probably that I was a girl, too. You know, since what-if is the only thing we can actually do with these wishes.

  • FoxDev

    @Placeholder said:

Question #2: If one of my wishes cannot be fulfilled due to the fundamental limits of the universe, do I get a refund?

according to this system there are no fundamental limits to the universe. if they are your wish will change them in order to grant the wish. ;-)

    @Jarry said:

also: Dr. Manhattan powers are available?
unless they violate the posted rules, yes they are available.

    @ben_lubar said:

    sequential, one per 24 hours.

i thought i made that clear in the rules... guess i didn't

true, but this does limit the amount of future information that can be obtained.

Additionally quantum being quantum the wishes make no guarantee that everything will happen exactly the same way when the day resets. although quantum being quantum and us being macro there aren't a lot of places those differences will show up in systems not directly reliant on quantum, at least not in the span of the 24 hours.

  • @accalia said:

Either way you can only get max 24 hours of future-knowledge. But if you go real real fast, you can do all sorts of shit also and take your time to get REAMS of future knowledge instead of just, say, which stocks rose the most.

You could also get tons of present-knowledge, if your morals were looser. For example, blackmail info. Or simply find a frozen person who's entering their account info and emptying them out later on.

correct, if that is the sort of thing you want to wish for.

  • kills Dumbledore

On one of the days, I think I would die. It might just cut it short or I might get some insight into what death is like. Maybe 5 minutes before the end of the first day.

As for wishes, knowledge of things is probably the way forward. A complete, intuitive knowledge of Chaos theory, how to make some dreamed-of future technology like cold fusion or FTL travel, and to ensure future wealth so I'd have time to make said technology without having to do boring stuff like work, the location of some buried treasure or other super valuable commodity (one I could recover myself, natch)

I'm too lazy to read this thread and its various rules so I wish that someone would explain it to me in moron.

  • Groundhog Day for three days, with a wish every day.

  • also, without Sonny & Cher

    1. I wish to know what I should wish for.
    2. I wish for whatever I should wish for.
    3. I wish for whatever I should wish for.
    4. GOTO 1 ' The universe will be reset to exactly as it was before I made my

The rules are subject to different interpretations. I would wish to be the ultimate arbiter who defines the spirit of the words, then I would twist the rules.

  • @julmu said:

GOTO 1 ' The universe will be reset to exactly as it was before I made mywish, so I have three more wishes.

OK, that isn't what was meant but I like your reading there.

  • That's a good point. Via a strict reading of he rules, the genie's memory resets after the wish. Time resets to exactly what it was before you made your wish-- including the genie not being aware you made a wish yet. The wisher's memory is preserved, but nothing about the genie's being preserved.

  • @blakeyrat said:

Via a strict reading of he rules, the genie's memory resets after the wish.

Via a strict reading there is no genie, it's a lantern that is doing the wish granting:

    @accalia said:

You have three wishes to ask of the magic lantern and it will grant them.

  • Imagine that you could travel to the year 400 BC (that's when Plato lived, for reference), creating a new timeline, but could only bring your memories.

Think of how much knowledge an expert biologist or physicist can have. Obviously you can't learn all that without without dedicating your life to it, but you can still learn an important fraction of each (say 1/4th) and still have enough "brain space" left to store

    • How the most important scientific discoveries happened, and how to make them happen again
    • A few embarrassing secrets of important figures at the time (to gain influence in the past and not be just a raving lunatic)
    • And a few dozen key facts that would change the lives of people in the past, for example, how to make vaccines
    • Plus all the baseline knowledge we have today about the world

Wouldn't that be a big fucking deal? You could advance history by centuries.

So you ask for super intelligence and knowledge of everything in the world that matters. You focus for the next 24 hours on what's most important to know right now, so that you'll remember it when you're a puny human again. Wish ends, write everything down, repeat 3 times. You got 3 "brainfuls" of the best possible knowledge you could have carried.

  • Winner of the 2016 Presidential Election

The real question is: Does the memory of everyone else reset? Because then I'd do a lot of things just to find out how people would react.

In fact, fuck the wishes, they're pretty much unnecessary then.

  • I wish for more magic lanterns.

Did anyone say that already? I skipped over everything to reply and I'd search but discosearch isn't going to help at all.

  • I admit that the possibility of having anything at all brings out a lot of fantasies to my mind... but with the knowledge you could gain during one of your wishes, you could easily become a trillionaire president of the world, which would last for much longer.

(Plus you could do the whole "helping other people" as a bonus)

    @ben_lubar said:

Sure? But now your entire brain has been replaced by a few lines of C code, and your body is a single ASCII character. You spend the next 24 hours (21.4285714 years of subjective time) walking around in circles or whatever DF characters do.

  • Via a strict reading, shut up.

  • @julmu said:

    1. I wish to know what I should wish for.
    2. I wish for whatever I should wish for.

Reminds me of an old joke

An angel came down for a meeting of the American Philosophical Association. Greeting the assembled philosophers, the angel offered to answer a single question for them. Immediately the philosophers set to arguing about what they should ask. So the angel said, "Alright, you figure out what you want to ask. I'll come back tomorrow." And he left the philosophers to deliberate.

Some of the philosophers favored asking conjunctive questions, but others argued persuasively that the angel probably wouldn't count this as a single question. One philosopher wanted to ask "What is the best question to ask?", in the hope that some day another angel might make a similar offer, at which point they could then ask the best question. But this suggestion was rejected by those who feared that no such opportunity would arise and did not want to waste their only question.

Finally, the philosophers agreed on the following question: "What is the ordered pair whose first member is the best question to ask, and whose second member is the answer to that question?" Satisfied with their decision, the philosophers awaited the angel's return the next day, whereupon they posed their question. And the angel replied: "It is the ordered pair whose first member is the question you just asked, and whose second member is the answer I am now giving." And then he disappeared.

  • It does not affect the rules on the list, it adds an additional one and the rule affects it (not the wish). It also doesn't go against the spirit of the rules because it the spirit is to prevent direct changes to the existing rules.

  • FoxDev

    @asdf said:

Does the memory of everyone else reset?

yes. You are the only person who remembers what happens during the wishes

  • In the first day I would wish to be able to fly under my own power. I would either spend that day in the skies, thinking of the best way to ask for me being able to experience eternity within the following 24 hours, or on land, lawyering up a non-exploitable wish that would enable me to gain information about the source of the wishes (with the intention of getting them back for screwing me over on the first wish). In both scenarios, what I would wish for on the third day is impossible to predict from this side of the second day. Actually, to be honest not even sure about the second day—being able to fly might be awesome enough that I just wish for it again and again.

  • Make sure you get the requisite secondary super-powers. Being able to fly would suck otherwise. You can't get any speed, or the wind becomes too painful. You can't go too high or you'd either freeze or black out from lack of oxygen. Not to mention the troubles of navigation if you did get high altitudes and speeds...
