Because what could possiby go wrong?

We think it will go global.
If it does, I'm buying stock in popcorn industry. I'm pretty sure the sales will go up at least 100%.

Earlier this year the call was put out to the diplomatic corps in Canberra and the 110 missions around the world for any idea that would provide a radical rethink of business as usual.
"Hey cobbers, lets create a solution in search of a problem..."
More than half the department's staff responded by submitting, or by voting or commenting on one of the 392 pitches to the "DFAT Ideas challenge".
I'm sure they've spelt DAFT wrong there. And if they're including things like "breathed on a DAFT idea", the fact that only around half of the staff were involved doesn't look too promising.

Depending on the implementation, it could be great. But likely the same thing that always happens will happen: the lowest bid will deliver the least functional implementation and it will stay in use for years even after the security vulnerabilities are pointed out.
Basically, this news article is not news.

So you have to gather together lots of biometric data - all of which can be used for future identity theft. And then you have to upload it to some server somewhere. And that server will be secured by the Australian government? So now, you need to trust that they can (or care enough to bother) keep all this data secure. You need to trust that they won't use it for their own purposes, and that they won't sell it to other governments, corporations and organizations for the right price.
All this so you don't have to carry a small booklet with you when traveling?
They're stark raving mad. And anyone who voluntarily signs up is even crazier.

Australia introduces cloud passports
Man...I knew they were serious about keeping illegal immigrants out, but I didn't realized that had gotten to the point of meteorological phenomena.

I'm gonna pitch this to our directors tomorrow morning as our next big opportunity. Our company should SO tender to develop this (or at least a part of it).
At least that way I'll keep my privacy, and could start a great side-business selling counterfeit passports on silk road... no wait a minute, that got shut down... I've gotta be more current with my deep web pop-culture before making jokes like that :(

IKR? Since when do you need a passport to visit clouds?
-
@boomzilla only ever yells at clouds though, never visits. Too far from his lawn.
Filed under: dash of normalcy, I needed that so badly

You don't know how Australia tends to work, do you?

You don't know how Australia tends to work, do you?
Like moving a thousand miles to a new area and immediately starting a petition to drive the immigrants out?
-
Don't they get a bunch of mail intended for Austria?
