Why is Everybody so clueless on the importance of Desktop Search to the Masses?

Seriously, this is sad.  No matter what we do, we lose:

    - If we continue to humour this madman, we are wasting valuable minutes and hours of our lives

    - If we ignore him or the thread gets locked, he wins by default

Geez What do You expect. You started arguing Desktop Search with somebody who actually wrote one. A Very good one at that. How could you expect yourself or this group to win that argument. Don't feel bad. Use the damn program that is beating yours at every turn.

Please go search your text files somewhere else.  If you get bored, you can watch some random video.  2 seconds at a time, keeps things from getting boring.  Maybe some music text pics.  Read the thread over again with random scrolling large font.  You'll see how much fun it can be when you stop posting.  You can even read the thread from your backups when you lose your DSL.  You'll see.  You non-believer.  Boooo.

2000 posts of this shit is more than anybody should have to take.

The only ShowDown Spectate would accept is one where SSDS wins by default.

     For example:

    • SSDS is clearly superior because it features random, scrolling text
    • SSDS is the best because it was written in VB 5.0
    • SSDS rules over all because it was written by a deranged lunatic

Us Grepplers have put up with quite a bit as well

Wouldn't you have to actually use grep, instead of your own homebrew abomination, in order to be a greppler?

Now, if you're just using it to differentiate people who use 'non-indexed' searching, you probably should know that most people who use grep also know better than to waste their time merging all their files together, and use an indexed search when it's appropriate. Grepplers are also indexers.

Speaking of which, I never did see your response to the GDS example earlier when Wooter performed a GDS search in 0.03 seconds, that's faster than SSDS isn't it?  It even provided context and hilighting.

If you want to be taken seriously, you can't hide from data that disagrees with your opinions.

We have all tried really hard to get him to acknowledge or even respond to any of the perf numbers a while back, but he just ignored it completely and gave the standard "it's faster" response and shifted in to a bunch of non-sequiturs again.

I am slowly realizing that he thinks there is some sort of global holy war going on in regards to search engine internals. The honest truth is that people who actually have shit to do and tasks to accomplish use whatever works best. If I happen to use grep for something, that doesn't mean I sit up all night plotting the destruction of index-based search tools. If I happen to use an index-based tool the next day to find something, same.

Any user, from the least technically inclined to the highest caliber of engineer, simply wants to use something that works and and gets the job done with as little hassle. SSDS is so full of bugs it barely functions, does not meet its own set of (ever-changing and completely useless) requirements, is impossible to use and flat out does not work or provide any value to anyone.

    Spectate -

One of the biggest parts of software engineering is understanding and respecting your (potential or current) user base. I am curious as to what you hope to accomplish by roaming the internet being rude and forceful with people who are trying to help you or try your software - or at least get you on the right track. Most of us would devote this same energy to writing software that works or improving our craft. Why is this not a focus for you? If you just don't care enough to learn about what you are doing (as you have admitted) and have no intention of respecting other professionals or your user base, then why do you expect us to give time and respect to your ideas?

I hated it when they took away line numbers. So I put them back in. I think the guy that eliminated line numbers,  was behind Canada going Metric. More efficient. WhatEver. Efficiency doesn't matter. computers are so fast.

Line numbers are useless if you make large changes as the line numbers change, why not use labels that have meaning rather than an arbitrary number? Line numbers are no more or less efficient than labels - labels however are far more readable and convey additional meaning. This is really a desgin time issue and has nothing to do with run time performance.

Keep the hi-lite and line wrap logic intact. Get the rest working then clean the Wrap stuff up if you feel like. Once you have achieved hi-lite & linewrap you are 3/4 the way there. Go for it. The World needs more Grepplers.

This would be a lot easier if the code was better documented. How on earth can 2 features count for 3/4 of the program?

Can 'awk' or 'sed' do video. Navigation through video text music pics? Just what else can they do? A couple lines of code will fix what is a trivial problem. Nothing to get upset about. OMG Swamp doesn't do???

That isn't what they are designed for, tools like sed and awk are designed to work with textual input and they do this excellently - adding features like random and video would only detract from there central purpose.

I did what I wanted in a search. That is why I'm so happy with it. And I'm pissed that the techies don't get it. So much so I'm Anti-Techie

In a nutshell - you created a tool that suits you, decided to call it a search tool despite the fact it isn't and now insist on forcing down the throat of the internet at large; making arrogant claims about it's superiority and how everyone else is wrong. Perhaps the problem doesn't lie with the techies on this...

That's why it needs a skin.

A skin is a cosmetic change to the look and feel of an application, SSDS would require a fundamental redesign of it's UI - however the code involved is very tightly coupled with the existing design and would also need to undergo major changes to alter the interface. This is one of the reasons most software projects use multiple files to organise the source and give better separation between UI and code.

Geez What do You expect. You started arguing Desktop Search with somebody who actually wrote one. A Very good one at that. How could you expect yourself or this group to win that argument. Don't feel bad. Use the damn program that is beating yours at every turn.

No, and we have had this out before, you wrote a tool that searches single files - you did not write a desktop search tool. It is not very good, there is no argument to win or loose. SSDS does not beat our chosen search tools at any turn except the bizarre situations that you seem to promote i.e. large files (even though you had to artificially create files big enough to cause problems), random etc.

Sometime knowledge can be pure funny. If this thread hasn't made people laugh once and a while, they wouldn't have read or responded. 2000 That's more than any of the others put up with - By a long shot. Good Going Grepplers and Indexers.

THAT DOESN'T EVEN MAKE SENSE YOU RETARD.

Us Grepplers have put up with quite a bit as well. Haven't told you to FO. Not once. You keep comming back. Because you all know in your hearts that the Grepplers have it and the Indexers don't. Indexers are not as much fun as us Grepplers. Grepplers can make your data dance. Indexers can't

THAT DOESN'T EVEN MAKE SENSE YOU RETARD.

However in an attempt to explain our stance on the matter - grep and similar tools are designed to serve a single purpose i.e. searching inside of a file (or textual input anyway- file keeps the argument simple). Index based tools are designed to locate files. There is a big difference between the reasons for using either, sane people pick the tool which best suits the job in hand. Dancing data is neither required or possible with either tool.

For quite some time. I have been looking for a Desktop Search ShowDown and this is a GOOD start. I'll post all the SSDS training video links on a current page shortly. Nobody should be expected to start way way at the beginning to get all this Desktop Search Knowledge.

Yet you failed to respond to any of the suggest challenges; and in most cases proceded to ignore anyone who reminded you about them. Asking for a challenge is a reasonable way to garner interest. Failing to attempt any challenge though makes you out to be a charlatan, constantly ignoring the challenges but claiming superiority makes you annoying and ingnorant.

Just as a final point - when you create a sourceforge project and 'go open source' you really need to do other stuff such as post the application up for download, check code into the cvs repository so people can get access etc.
