Windows 10 automatically installing :shit:
-
I visited a friend yesterday, and connected to his WiFi. They have a HP printer that accepts print jobs over WiFi. I press , type "printer" and this shows up:
It gets automatically installed from Windows Store the moment I connect to a wireless network that has a printer like this. And it claims it's "all-in-one" but my older HP printer came with something called "HP Service Center" and that also claims to handle any HP printer but neither of those claims seems to be true.
-
Since when is installing software from the internet when new hardware gets detected a new thing? Even Windows XP did this.
-
XP at least asked you if you want it to do that. Usually it failed to find any drivers anyway.
-
Drivers are one thing, the added randomware that no one needs is another. I
don't need this app to print stuff because the printer can be used
regularly.
-
It seems like it's HP defining that though, not Microsoft.
They've published a driver and said "this driver needs this app" so it's gone and got it. It's probably useful for the majority of non-Enterprise Windows 10 users with HP printers.
-
-
Why is it always HP? My Nexus 7 came with an unremovable "HP cloud print" app which, surprise surprise, I've never used or even launched
-

Windows has automatically downloaded and installed drivers and related apps for... what, a decade now? I can't remember if it was in Windows 2000, but it was definitely in Windows XP.
But yes, sure, time to panic now. Why not.

Right-click, choose "uninstall", and get on with your life. How's that for a solution?

They're doing cloud now. That is something that people do. It is better than anybody else's cloud.

Wow, i have just discovered this a few hours ago and came here to waste a bit of down time.
I plugged in an HP OfficeJet 4500, which has a scanner. HP AiO App installed and I thought 'great' that saves all the hassle of a 200mb download of crapware from HP... things are improving....Until that I actually came to use the app, It doesn't appear to do ANYTHING until you have installed all the HP crapware drivers as well. Even the shop for cartridges feature is broken.

Every time my dad starts up his laptop, he gets a huge popup that says "WARNING: YOUR PRINTER'S YELLOW CARTRIDGE IS EXPIRED". I told him that as long as he doesn't try to eat it he should be fine.
Seriously, what is it with HP and having ransomware come with a physical object that you bought?

Yeah, anyone who runs for president of the USA clearly has something wrong with them.

I didn't know about the 'related apps' part until now.Choosing uninstall does not always work. For 'Get Office', 'Solitaire Collection', 'Sports', 'Money' and the like, they get reinstalled from time to time.
-
No go, it "repaired" itself and came back!

You should use... LEXMARK!!!
What about Cannon?

Actually, I remember having to use a Lexmark printer-scanner like 12 or 13 years ago. (I think it was X2310, but I might be wrong here.)
So, I was fighting with it again and I was talking with my friend and he said that he had this printer too. So I asked him hopefully: "And how do you like it?". "It's a very nice piece of equipment... to throw with."
I don't know the quality of their printers now, but it used to be utter shit.
-
The bigger question, after the decades of shitty HP software, why would you expect the HP printer to have a decent driver?
-
Same reason that, after decades of being shitty, Windows became decent with Windows 7.
-
Right; that is exactly what happened.
-
Yeah, anyone who runs for president of the USA clearly has something wrong with them.
We need some kind of reverse emoji for what Ben just did up there.
-
What about Cannon?
Using a cannon to fire an HP printer out a window seems like an excellent idea.
-

I removed them using Powershell, they ain't come back yet.
Then again, I'm not signed into either Windows 10 machine with a Microsoft account, so the store doesn't work.

Well, according to my mailbox it went exactly as one would expect by that Onion clip...

I blame Carly Fiorina.
I blame Léo Apotheker because he's from Belgium.

There's nothing wrong with the driver (usually). It's all the additional useless crapware that's the problem. Yeah, you can (maybe) uninstall it, but it's still stupid.
-

I recently discovered something nice about a friend's HP printer (gasp!). We were setting up a new machine and didn't have the drivers. Turns out plugging the printer in mounts a "CD" with the drivers on it. That was a bit of a surprise...

So the HP Cloud turned out to be vaporware? Stunned, I tell you. Stunned.

Away off with you to the bad jokes thread.

Don't you rain on my parade. I don't want to have to retreat to the pavilion.

Hewlett Packard (and most other printer makers these days) do not sell printers. They give away printers and then sell ink or toner cartridges. If you use your printer enough to use one per month, you'll probably pay at least three times the price of your printer for cartridges in the first year.
And, yes, that is a bad idea...for us. Great for them, bad for us.

open an umbrella.
I would, but I'm in Australia.
Maybe Saudi English will be close enough. Or perhaps Ukrainian English might be even better.
-
HP cloud print
FWIW, that's actually useful because it lets you print from the tablet to a networked printer just like a computer.
The stupid PC bloatware, on the other hand...
-
I told him that as long as he doesn't try to eat it he should be fine.
XD QFT, gotta remember that one

Ooh, I vote for EMEA English. That should include both Saudi and Ukrainian English.

HP has great drivers for Linux.
I blame Léo Apotheker because he's from ■■■■■■■.
I blame Joep. Because.

belgium English sounds "fun" ...

Chuck us a bag a them pomes frights wouldja mate

that's actually useful
If you have an HP printer and want to print from your tablet. In which case you can download the app, rather than have it included when you update your supposedly bloatware free Nexus to KitKat

?
He's German, granted close to the border but still.
-
HP has great drivers for Linux.
As long as it's a PS-compatible one, yes.
Cheap AiO ones though, they are worse than on Windows.

I'm fairly sure Google listed Cloud printing support as a feature of the Nexus devices, that's why it comes with both Google Cloud Print and HP Cloud Print.
-
The Facebook App in my Lumia 920 also has no use as I don't use Facebook.
-
The facebook app is not installed on Nexuses, so your comment is irrelevant.
-
I know, Nexuses do not have those "Here" Apps that I have no use (Except maybe Here Maps) too.
-
Totally deliberate.
