I looked so the rest of you don't have to. Here's a summary

So, if holes are such sources of horror in space, why, oh why, is there a gun on the Space Station? To ward off aliens? To shoot an ex-sex-partner when he farts?

I read it too. Even if the OP couldn't be bothered to capitalize his post title or provide a description of what the WTF was. I had to check it out... and reading the article didn't answer my questions of WTF was the OP thinking.

My current theory is that he is the author of the article, and he has decided to spam every forum he can to get SOMEONE to read his shitty article.

  • I think "The WTF" here was supposed to be, "WTF is there a gun on the space station for?"

Did this guy never do that thought exercise in high school, where you're trapped in space and have some amount of random crap, and have to decide what to take and what to leave?

Equal and opposite reactions.  In space, a gun can be used as a propulsion device.

  • Well... this guy is clearly missguided and has really random thoughts... Like how to have sex while space-walking... I somehow think thats NOT NASA's top priority, no? Maybe people can you know... wait till they are on the space station etc...

Also farting in space... oooook... I guess we can go to the moon but farts will kill us all. We must all fart at the same time during certain parts of the day or the ecosystem will be destroyed!

I dunno with space tourism becoming reality I think this research should get some immediate funding ...

But there is a good reason for a gun on the space station. Years ago the Russians had one of their crews land in the middle of Siberia. The crew was alone in the woods for a rather long time, durring which they were menaced by wolves. After that they (the Russians) decided that arming the crews was a good idea. Seeing as how there is a Soyuz attached to the station it makes sense.

I see. So it's to protect them from space wolves

    Makes sense!

    ...

    ...

(psst ... The space station ain't landing in siberia, or anywhere on earth, in less than a few million pieces when it finally lands.)

  • I think it's to protect them against that guy's face.  Oi, even SpectateSwamp's beard isn't so painful.

I don't know about you, but I'm planning on joining the 200 Mile High Club at the earliest opportunity.

Then getting into space is the least of your problems!

Here's a summary of the summary:

AARGH!  MY EYES!  THE GOGGLES, THEY DO NOTHING!

Say, they aint doing much for him, either.

  • It's in the RUSSIAN RE-ENTRY CRAFT.

Idiots. The gun is there so they can survive in the wilderness if they have to ditch the station. That's why it shoots FLARES, and the stock has a MACHETTE IN IT.

It's not a WTF, it's fucking good planning.

And, a gun is lousy propullsion in space - gunpowder won't burn in vacume.

  • Discourse touched me in a no-no place

Yes it will. Gunpowder doesn't require gaseous oxygen to combust since it contains all the oxygen it needs in the form of Potassium Nitrate.

Not that anybody's used gunpowder in a hundred years, since it generates large amounts of smoke. Modern propellants are quite different.

But they function on much the same principles, including the fact that they contain enough oxygen to fire in space.
