Why is Everybody so clueless on the importance of Desktop Search to the Masses?

    Your only tool is a hammer (SSDS), so everything looks like a nail (textfile).  I've got an entire toolbox filled with useful stuff, only one of which is a hammer (grep). I use the appropriate tool for the job, so if I've got a screw, I'll use a screwdriver. You'll just pound in the screw with your hammer and claim the screw is really just a nail.

    Even worse - he's got lug nuts, screws, washers, brackets, and all kinds of metal objects that may be more useful than nails in certain situations.  What does he do? Melt them all down into nails (convert everything to plain text).

  • SSDS is the manifestation of mankind's sin

    The mind control powers of SpectateSwamp are fearsome indeed. 39 pages of pure drivel based on one of the worst ideas for *anything* I have ever seen. I was even considering rewriting the crapplication myself just to make it go away. But I realise it's never going away. The dreams of ProjectGutenberg.txt won't stop. Make it go away.

    Every company could use Swamp search to help them share data. The potential is incredible.

    As opposed to the numerous technologies and collaboration tools they can already use? I think not.

    You did good I'll make a comment on my email archiver rather than cut and paste into inmail.txt and outmail.txt I'll use this great extract.

    Now I can search for anything in the above line and have the information at my fingertips. I don't care how big this file gets. Swamp search just soaks it up.

    Regardless of how yu do it, storing your e-mail in one large file that looses attachments and doesn't provide an easy way to track conversation threads is dumb, MPS has saved you a bit of the time it takes you to be dumb, that is all. You can now do dumb things faster, are you proud?

      @SpectateSwamp said:

    That won't happen untill SSDS has met and Crushed the challenge from GDS CDS WDS and YDS. Then you'll see lots of our little app. People already have it in their hands. I'm sure some of you are far smarter than me and can take this program a long way.

    SSDS is not comparable to any of the search tools you just listed - they all search for files, ssds only searches inside of files. They search multiple formats, ssds searches plain text. They work with the data in it's current location and build any required indexes automatically, ssds requires me to put data into a single file and build any indexes by hand.

    People may have it in their hand, but only because you have to pick something up before you can throw it a long way.

    You are reading the file twice then? The second time you are benfitting from the fact the first time loaded the entire file into the OS' cache. This is the reason we know you are producing videos that have been pre-loaded. Also could you not just open the file and simply seek (i.e. move the current read position in the file to the end) to get the last info ratherthan doing two full reads?

    See? As I said before. You're reading the file twice to find the line. That is reading to memory. That is what Copernic does (you complained about it). And you're doing it TWICE! And that is why when comparing Copernic to SSDS you need to do it with a cleanly started SSDS instance (not preload the file).

    Please re-read the thread. I didn't give him anything,

    I gave him the link to the Outlook Express archiver, because I got tired of hearing him whine that email clients "hold your data hostage" because they cannot export to plain text.  He moaned that he'd wasted hours of his life (7 seconds per email) copying and pasting.  When I suggested he should incorporate the functionality into SSDS (after all, it does EVERYTHING) he belligerently challenged this forum to write the program for him.

    I used a simple Google search to find that program.  It took me a few seconds.  I thought that would've humbled Swamp a little bit.  Guess that shows how stupid I am.

    In fact, I'd bet he isn't using that program at all.  He probably still finds it "easier" to copy and paste, because the slightest change in his working routine is anathema to that man.

    That's not scrolling text. That' "draw a page of text, erase it, draw another page". Scrolling is when the text moves UP the screen. The top line vanishes, the remaining text moves up, and a new line is drawn at the bottom.

    But that's just being pedantic. More importantly: by god that's slow. I can get a marker and draw text on the screen faster than that. How long does it take for your cut 'n paste of this thread take to "scroll" by? I'm guessing a couple hours, minimum. You know that most programs have the ability to increase font sizes dynamically, right? In Firefox it's CTRL-plus and CTRL-minus. In IE it's View -> Text Size. And when the font size increases, scrolling speed doesn't slow down. We don't have to go messing around in a control.txt file and restart the program to change sizes.

    Oh, and congrats for making it onto SourceForge.

    By the way, I noticed something when reading this thread late night on my laptop. It's an age-old laptop that doesn't like these newfangled memory-hungry web browsers (even Opera is kind of a big bite), so I usually use some superlight browsers like Dillo or even text-based browsers like elinks or...

    ...actually, reading this forum is pain in elinks because it renders the pages too wide. So I usually use Lynx. (In case you are wondering, Lynx looks a lot like what you have pasted on those files. Hold on a moment, I'm getting to it.)

    Now, it's pretty hard to tell from your video what text was quoted and what was originally posted, because the quotation indents aren't evident. There's a same problem with Lynx, actually.

    I believe we have the same problem: It takes a little bit of guessing to see where the quotation from another post ends. How do you handle it? I think this is even more important to you since you care so much about the context - I don't care about it that much myself, since I'm merely reading the stuff in order...

    @SpectateSwamp said:

    How could I possibly be doing anything to slow down my reads by half?

    You're using Visual Basic. And version 5 at that. It's not a "fast" language. Even if it does come as a .exe, it's still interpreted line-by-line by the visual basic runtime (all those .dlls you have to install just to be able to run your .exe). And then your code is, to put it very very mildly, highly unoptimized. Just because you can read a line of text using one line of visual basic code doesn't imply AT ALL that what's happening in the background is efficient. VB is a piece of highly stinky diarrhea for anything that requires high performance. Your one line of code is actually a few hundreds or thousands of lines of code inside VB's guts.

    Oh come on! I am hardly a fan of VB5 or 6 but you saying SSDS is slow OR a piece of crap because of VB is just ignorant. SSDS is a piece of crap because an idiot coded it. He could achieve comparable speeds by not 'reading' and processing every line in a file and not having AWFUL code strewn all over like he has.

    Anyone here should be able to pick up VB5 or VB6 and write an algorithm with output comparable to your results.

    Agreed. And by the way, VB5 has (had?) the ability to generate native code, as opposed to P-code, although I don't know which one is the default (which SS undoubtedly uses). Also P-code is hardly "interpreted line-by-line".

    @MarcB said:

    Here's the script I used to generate the swamp.txt test file. It's very easy.
    A VB expert like you can no doubt reproduce it in only a few years:

    #!/usr/bin/perl

    open($fh, '>swamp.txt');
    for $x (1 .. 20000000) {
            print $fh "This is line $x. Here's some more text to make the file even bigger, even though this text is repeated every line\n";
    }
    close($fh);

    Aww, you're just mean! Here, Swampy, I made you a deathbirthday present by converting it to VBScript. You only need to figure out how to run it!

    Option Explicit

    Dim fso, file, x
    Set fso = CreateObject("Scripting.FileSystemObject")
    Set file = fso.CreateTextFile("swamp.txt", True)
    For x = 1 to 20000000
      file.WriteLine("This is line " & CStr(x) & ". Here's some more text to make the file even bigger, even though this text is repeated every line")
    Next
    file.Close
    </pre

    And joys, it actually illustrates a good programming practice!

    It was pretty weird being YellowHead. I started getting a strange urge to run Yellow lights while driving about my YellowHead riding. The Kids at Sangudo school cheered my speech and my YellowHead wildly. Lots of horn honking when people spotted YellowHead putting up Election Signage. I learned more in 2 weeks running for Federal politics than the rest of my life. Man they cheat at the forums. Too bad. Thats why I video them. The organizers (usually the chamber of commerce) are the ones that don't want my camera there. Not the candidates.

    Even in the U.S., scientists use metric, idiot.  Or do you really think dividing by 12 (converting feet to inches) is easier than dividing by 100 (converting metres to centimetres), for example.

    Physicists and engineers have to deal with "nerdy" stuff like rounding errors, significant digits, precision of measurements, and using metric avoids a lot of problems.  The reason is because the common man uses a base-10 counting system, and metric uses multiples of 10 when converting between units.  In base 10, when you divide or multiply by 10, all you have to do is move the decimal point.  No rounding errors or loss of precision there.

    Of course, you might've picked up "geeky" shit like that if you'd paid any attention past Grade 9.

    (BTW, if you think engineers and physicists are useless, just ask yourself: WHO DESIGNED YOUR LAPTOP AND CAMCORDER, WHICH YOU CLEARLY LOVE MORE THAN LIFE ITSELF?)

    It was pretty weird being YellowHead. I started getting a strange urge to run Yellow lights while driving about my YellowHead riding.

    YOU ARE NOT FUNNY.  People are laughing AT you, not WITH you.

    The Kids at Sangudo school cheered my speech and my YellowHead wildly. Lots of horn honking when people spotted YellowHead putting up Election Signage.

    How'd that election go for you, again?   They cheered for you because you were a mascot, a joke.   When it was time to vote, the COMMON MAN chose a real candidate.
